Okay, I don’t know how to download the video so you can watch it, but here’s a still of me seated in the gutter outside the FX Emmy after party last night, ala Lindsay Lohan. And I don’t even drink. I really don’t get out much clearly. Heels, long dress, curb, paparazzi are too much for me to deal with at one time. SO embarrassing. Anyway, that’s how my night ended.
Here’s how it began: We got all dressed up and the makeup artist took this photo. Within an hour all that makeup would be dripping down my face in rivulets of sweat.
When you arrive at these awards shows, the traffic is bumper to bumper. You sit in your car and say,” Hey, there’s so and so in the next car,” and you worry about your liipstick and gobble mints and argue about what music should be playing on the radio.
When you get out of the car, you must go through security:
And then you’re on the red carpet, which is a little bit crowded:
There are bleachers filled with photographers on both sides of the red carpet:
They took photos of us:

The producers of various shows like E and entertainment Tonight ask you to wait in line to be interviewed. We seemed to be following the Colberts. Then we met up with Samantha Bee, Jason Jones and Rob Riggle from the Daily Show. I’m a HUGE fan of Samantha Bee and had never met her in person, and she was just as funny as you’d imagine she’d be.
I’m not going to show you any photos of the inside of the theater because you probably had the misfortune of watching it on TV. Was the show as unfunny at home as it was live? Denis didn’t win, but RECOUNT got two Emmys, which was great.
Afterward, we went to the Governor’s Ball and the HBO party and hung out with Laura Dern and Kevin Spacey. Then we decided to stop in at the FX party, which is where I decided to pitch myself at the feet of the TMZ guys. Once we got inside though, it was nice. We hung out with Rescue Me Executive Producer (and Denis’s business partner) Jim Serpico and his wife Sherry:
And we chatted with Glenn Close, who just gets more gorgeous every year.
Wow! You look stunning – fabulous dress on a to-die-for figure.
You looked lovely at the Emmys. Denis should have won for Heavens sake! I am so proud of you for laughing off your fall! I myself am the Queen Mother of the Klutzes but luckily none of my spills end up on TMZ! You handled it beautifully!
Oh, Ann, you had on the most fabulous dress and looked DIVINE in it. Totally WOW.
Sorry about your misstep, it’s always embarrassing to fall, hope no injuries.
…..and my opinion of the show overall, I felt sorry for the folks in that theater that had to sit through it, but I dislike awards shows of all kinds-they suck! I left after 10 mins. Congrats to “Recount” for the win.
: )
You looked beautiful, the dress was perfect on you, very classy. You and Denis matched very nicely. I am glad you weren’t hurt when you fell and kept your humour.
You were by far one stunning looking woman on the red carpet, and we all love you even more since “the slip”. You are so down to earth and wonderfully human in a fake world of red carpets.
Oh those are great pics of what really goes on before and after
At least TMZ didnt say you were drunk and blamed your heels. You look lovely though
You looked gorgeous! That dress was great. Your husband is a sweetheart, making sure you got out of car the OK before anything else. I hope you weren’t too embarrassed and enjoyed your evening anyway!
You know, it almost looked like your husband gave you a little push there…
You handled that well and I think we all like you more for it. You’re fortunate – TMZ can be pretty mean. I think they like you, too. You looked gorgeous, and congrats to Denis for the nomination. By the way, the good thing about watching the Emmys on TV is you can flip to the football game!
You are a real trooper! I watched the video and you were fabulous the way you handled that. Denis gets the award for BEST HUSBAND OF THE NIGHT for sweetly taking care of you and pretty much telling the paparrazi where to stick it.
If I had done that – my ankle would be broken!
Hope you are OK!
Hey Ann, it must have been the weekend for all Ann Leary’s to fall! I fell too. My fall, though not graceful as yours was, occured in my kitchen (from spilled chicken picatta) in front of 45 women at a bridal party and not TMZ. You handled your fall with such aplomb and humor. I am still trying to find the humor in slithering in olive oil while looking up at my guests as they tried to stifle guffaws. You and Denis looked wonderful and we are all so proud of both of you. Mom was thrilled Denis called her from the Red Carpet. Have a wonderful rest of the trip!!!
How sweet – Denis called his Mom from the Red Carpet! That speaks volumes about Mrs. Leary and what an awesome lady she must be!
It’s so refreshing to see that there are celebs out there that really stay tied to their roots and loved ones….After all is said and done, it is family that remains…
Win or lose.
Sounds like you and your sister-in-law are two peas in a pod!
Ann, breathtaking .. that is how you looked. Loved that dress, who is the designer? As for the fall,, I think the bigger flop was the Emmy’s themselves. I love awards shows and was really looking forward to a nice Sunday night, huge disappointment. Hope your fall didn’t cause too much damage.
You looked AMAZING!! Loved the dress and seeing you on the red carpet. You are a natural!! Well, except for the whole falling down thing. (I kid!) Thanks for sharing the night!
Ann,
You handled that fall like a pro! I have never seen anyone bounce up from a fall that quickly and do it so gracefully! And you looked absolutely stunning!
best,
Jocelyn
Ann–I took a tumble in front of lots of people this weekend too! I was participating in the “Iron Girl Duathlon” here in Minnesota. I am mostly a walker, but when I came around to the crowd before getting onto my bike, in order to look ultra-cool–I decided to run that part. The path was pretty bumpy. I went down like a ton of bricks. My sunglasses that were on my face are totally scratched and I have two skinned knees, two road-rashed palms and one embarrassing story to tell. (I still took 20 minutes off my time from last year though!!!)
Hope you had a good trip home!
I love the fact that you posted a picture of yourself falling down! It shows what a great sense of humor you have about yourself. You don’t have all that annoying vanity and ridiculous pride that you come to expect from Hollywood. It makes me like you all the more!
Don’t know if the emmys were boring. I generally avoid award shows like the plague. I’m totally ADD and somehow can’t make it past the first 10 minutes.
I’m glad to be back connected to the internet. I had two weeks without. It’s a long story and I wrote all about it on my blog. Nice to be back to reading your blog again!
You looked stunning! I’d love to hear the story of the whole process – how you found the dress, did you borrow the jewels, did you buy stock in Spanx the week before, etc. I hope Denis was very complimentary.
