Today, Denis was nominated for a Golden Globe for the HBO movie, Recount!.
I was on my way to the set of Rescue Me when he called me with the news, which made me very happy, but I was already whipped into a state of delirious excitement that bordered on mania because a) I was approaching a major metropolitan area and b) I was leaving a very quiet rural area.
It’s 8:00 in the evening and I’m back in the country but I’m still wound up. I’ve spent the past couple of weeks almost completely holed up in my office and I had forgotten how fun the people can be!
I wanted to take photos of Denis’s dressing room for my blog, but I knew he’d be annoyed, so you’ll just have to imagine the world’s messiest dorm room, throw in a plasma TV and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what the space looks like. It’s a large room because he and the writers and producers and assistants all work there between takes. They have sports playing on the TV constantly. Every minute, whether they’re writing, sleeping, eating, being interviewed – whatever Denis and the writers and assistants are doing – a game is going on at the same time.
So, I was perched on a chair, taking it all in – all the show-biz razzle-dazzle (five guys watching a hockey game on satellite TV), when I saw Denis lift what I first thought was a small computer, but came to discover was a gigantic remote control. It was like a circus clown prop and I burst out laughing, thinking it was some sort of a gag. But, in fact, this is a real remote control that the guys use. It really is every man’s dream – a remote control that is impossible to lose.
I had gone in to do a video with Denis which promotes book buying for the holidays. When I get a copy I’ll post it here.
Now I’m going to try to recover from all the stimulation. I’ve literally been talking to nobody but dogs, and occasionally my daughter and husband, for weeks.
Good grief, that remote is unreal! You’re right, Ann, it does look like a circus clown prop!
I can hardly wait to see the video you and Denis are doing to promote book buying for the holidays. I love books…holding them, smelling them, immersing myself in their stories. Thanks to you and Denis for adding such enjoyable, literate books to my collection.
Your excitement at spending the day with adults is one I can understand. Living in a small town and working in a two-person insurance agency doesn’t provide many opportunities for stimulating conversations. I hope you are able to calm yourself down, yet retain that excitement, connectedness, and boost of self-confidence you received from your day in the city with grown-ups!!
Oh–and congratulations to Denis for his Golden Globe nomination!! I’ll be cheering for him during the awards ceremony. He most certainly deserves to win–this award and every other award for which he has ever been nominated.
Ann,
You seriously crack me up! “Delirious excitement bordering on mania” is a feeling I can relate to! The last few days my “step” mom was here visiting us and she and I were in that state of excitement the whole time she was here. My husband just sat back and watched us go….:) Lol!
Those pics of that remote are hilarious as well. My god, that is a HUGE remote! It takes 2 hands?!?!? So funny!
Also, Congrats to on the Golden Globe Nomination!
lol and there is that jacket again! I want one of those remotes. They should come standard with men,
Are you sure that remote is that huge so it doesn’t get lost? It looks like something my husband would like because he wouldn’t have to put on his reading glasses to flip channels!
Ann, I LOVE your blog you are amazing, brilliant and beautiful. I read both your books and LOVED them! I forwarded The Lanyard to everyone I knew, it was perfect. And because you were so kind to share that with us, your readers, I got the Mom Song in my email today and immediately thought of you and all my favorite mom’s. You may have already heard it but it is fantastic and worth listening to again

Enjoy!
How is the book coming along, can you share anything with your blog buddies?
Ann,
How exciting to be nominated for a Golden Globes! Tell Denis Congrats. And where do you get one of those remotes so I can stop looking for my glasses to read the one we have =)
Glad you had an exciting day in the city. Can’t wait to see the book video.
I think the remote is from Brookstone, and yes, I think it serves a duel purpose as neither Denis not I can read a regular remote control without glasses anymore. Still, I’d rather put on my specs than heft that thing every time I want to change channels.
I was thinking that it would be so heavy that my husband would get tired of changing channels every five minutes =)
How hysterically funny and vastly entertaining is “The Mom Song”!?!?!?! Thanks for posting the link, Janet. I guffawed out loud numerous times.
And I wish what Mary opined were true: That the huge remote would be so heavy it would keep our husbands from changing the channel every five minutes! By the way, Mary, consider yourself fortunate if your husband changes the channel only every five minutes. I swear mine changes it every five seconds! We would be divorced if we didn’t have two televisions.
I LOVE the “Mom Song.” Watched it twice! Thanks Janet. I thought it was very funny, then the ending where she pronounces “I’M A MOM!” got me a little goose-pimply. We are like Godesses, us moms.
Must add that somebody emailed me about the Golden Globe logo on this post. It’s a little dated. This will be the 66th annual Golden Globe awards. I just couldn’t find an image that didn’t have the very ugly trophy (seriously, it looks like a gilded sex toy) without an annoying celebrity clutching it – or worse, kissing it.
….. wait!! was that a Starbucks ‘coffee drink’ in front of denis???? after his ranting about designer coffee…. hmmm. next thing we know, he’ll be riding on some major roads on his racing bike, in spandex, demanding his share of the road!!!
Busted!
I got a remote just like that and you cant loose it . I do run the battery’s down because I go to sleep on it . Someone said Denis has a driving force behind him , and it is you, that is true . You are his gas that fuels his engine. Congratulations on the Golden Globe Nom. This is way bigger than the Emmy’s. I cant wait to see what you will wear . Low heals I hope . LOL
…you KNOW what they say about guys with big remotes…(big tvs?)
I bought that remote for my dad a couple years ago and he loves it!
What are you going to wear to the Golden Globes?? Are the designers ringing your phone off the hook?? I’m sure it’ll be a stunner. What fun! Oh, and congrats to Denis!
