Guadalupe just sent me a link to some very old photos she found of Denis and me on the web. I have to share this one.

It looks like I was midway through my sex change from man to woman. You’d think Denis might have suggested something with sleeves to cover those Popeye arms. I swear, I never took steroids. It was from pushing a double stroller with those kids – at that age – up the steepest hill you can imagine at Riverside Park in Manhattan every day. I was always too impatient to let the kids walk, because their little legs didn’t move as fast as mine, so I pushed them and their friends around the city in a stroller until they were quite big. I think if we hadn’t moved to the country, I’d still be trotting them around town in some sort of rickshaw. You get some serious biceps and shoulders from all that pushing.
I love Jack’s movie star shades. We were at the opening of some kids’ movie.
I can’t stop staring at those arms. What a freak.
Here’s a link to a video of me with a very cute haircut I had at the time. I was still nursing, that’s why my breasts were so large.
Ah, you just had toned arms! Isn’t it funny how embarassing old pics can be? I have a few myself! That music on the video is just awful. Sounds like….well, I won’t say what it sounds like!
Oh Ann! My arms NEVER looked so tone as when I was toting and pushing a double stroller full o’ twins around. You’ve warmed my heart. (I’m guessing that Denis, like my husband, was so wow-ed by the muscularity of motherhood’s progress that he rather liked them.) From the looks of recent pictures of you, your arms haven’t degenerated into post-double stroller batwings. How I wish I had your arms there, now.
Great picture.
LOL,….soo funny,the video!
: )
Oh my, I laughed so hard at the “cute haircut”
I ´m sure I ruptured a vein in my head!!
You are so funny
Have good day!!!

Ann, you are much too hard on yourself (however, you are also extremely funny).
That was one of your funniest blog entries ever! I’m actually jealous of your arms in that picture…. no matter how much I go to the gym, I fear I’ll always have ‘cafeteria lady arms.’
Omg, you are so damned funny!
I just found a bunch of old pics and mine are truly mortifying. I was wearing some straw hat like Madeline…holding a smoke. You look great. (And I’m not just saying that b/c you could kick my ass.)
OMG…you are hilarious Ann…”midway through my sex change from man to woman”! I think your arms look awesome, very toned. I showed my husband the pic and he thinks that Denis was probably too afraid to say anything for fear of getting his butt kicked by you. (He also thought that your arms looked very nice and very shapely.) As for the large breasts…lol, that was some fancy jiggling going on!
That was great !!! Lisa, I don’t call mine “cafeteria lady” arms, but when I erase the board in my classroom, I always fear that I’m creating a real breeze, or that one of these days I’m going to fly away by my flapping arms…I’m so jealous of great, toned arms…(sigh)
Ann, you are SO funny. I laughed even harder after I clicked the link.
You should have seen my boy haircut in high school. Fortunately for me, I don’t think there are any pictures of it floating around on the web. I was old enough to know better and I can’t even use the excuse that it was “in style at the time,” either. Apparently I didn’t learn my lesson from the short haircut I had when I was 8, when everyone thought I was a boy. My 4-year-old recently saw an old home video and said, “Who’s that boy?” “It’s your mother.” “No, the boy in the purple shirt!” “That’s YOUR MOTHER.” It was that bad.
I think your arms looked fabulous
Angela….lol! How funny about your 4 year old asking who was the boy in the video
Thanks for sharing.
Dear Ann, I love this blog!
Ann, I wish I had those arms! I was thinking about your book the other day, how is it going on that? Saw an ad this week for a kindle, don’t think I would have even noticed it if not for learning about it on your vacation blog.
OH Ann!! you are to much and i would have to agree maybe it was fear and or better judgment that kept Denis from telling, also after watching the video that could be why you moved out to the country the road you were going on in the video probably even scared the bodygaurd thanks again for sharing

Ann:
The photo reminded me of the times when my children were about that same age. I could never outwitt them nor outthink them and I spent plenty of time going :”huh?”
My oldest liked to torture my littlest one, being 3.5 years apart. Behind my back, he would make faces to his little brother. I had told them to call on me ONLY if they were hurting.. as there were always other children in the house, and a lot of comotion and drama and stuff. Also I did not like the job of referee.
One time my youngest comes to tell me this:
“mom, HE is looking at me”!
“It is okay to look at people, honey”
“No, mom, he is looking at me and he is making ‘lips’ at me and he is hurting my feelings.”
Ok. We could NOT have the ‘hurt’ part or my consistency would be destroyed.
I let a minute or two go by, glance behind me to check the situation, as it prevailed if you judged by the sighs from the young one, and sure enough there is my oldest, with his tongue sticking out as far as he could, clenched softly between his brand new teeth, his lips contracting and expanding to resemble those of a simian, together with eyeball rolling..
We could not have that, as I was afraid that the perpetrator would do that to a teacher should he get bored or teed off or just for want to taunt, so I would send him to the corner for two minutes to consider his actions…
I miss those times now, darn it.

Ann:
Are you sure Denis isn’t cowering in fear in this photo at the sight of your stupendously muscular arms?!?!?!? While I’m sure you did build some seriously toned arms while pushing strollers filled with children up hills, their appearance in the photo could be exaggerated by the angle of your stance, the cut of your dress, and the lighting.
By the way, I re-read “An Innocent, a Broad” last week, which made me wonder what Jack’s birthdate is. I searched the book several times after finishing it to be certain I didn’t miss the date before asking what could be an amazingly stupid question. I’m thinking it is sometime next week, as you and Denis arrived in England on March 23 and Jack was born around two weeks later, correct?
Everyone on this terrific blog would love to wish your miracle first-born a Happy Birthday, I’m sure!
Love the picture and what you wrote. You are really funny!!! And it is an adorable photo.
Isn’t Jack wearing a Yankees t-shirt in this picture? I thought Denis was a Red Sox fan.
My son and daughter only wore NY Ranger t-shirts and sweatshirts when they were little. I could not bear to see them wearing any other hockey team attire. It was too painful!!! (Now of course, I have no say in what they wear. HA HA)
Hate to tell you this Ann, but those photos are also on the show, Biography. I have the episode of Denis’ on my DVR and they actually show the photo and a few others in these same clothes everyone is wearing. Oh well, they were the times! Angela, glad you can’t see my “boy photos” like your son did! They’re God awful!!! What was I thinking!?
Love the poem Cheryl, thank you! Yes, it’s almost one year of my blog. I was thinking of doing some kind of roll call on the anniversary day. I actually get thousands of page views every day but, as you can see, most of my readers are quiet types. I was thinking of asking everybody who reads the blog next Wednesday to post a comment, just to see how many comments we can get that day. This year has FLOWN by.
OMG…that is hysterical!!
YOU crack me up!!! ALWAYS!
Your arms are amazing in this pic! Not as scary as Madonna’s are now and like Elizabeth said, probably more exaggerated by the stance.
The video and music on that video made me crack up too! Thanks again for the laughs.
I just love this blog and the comments. It seems to always open my eyes to something new, make me smile or warm my heart. Thanks!

I understand the “quiet types” that read your blog each day. After almost a year of reading your wonderful postings, I am just beginning to have the courage to participate. Though I like to think of myself as witty as the next person, I feel a little intimidated trying to take what is inside my head and write it down in a blog.
Thank you all for the smile, chuckle and/or large guffaw every time I open a link….especially you, Ann.
