Thanks for asking Ann! The red is elegant - it is as simple as that. You need not be wed to the idea of an American designer because you are not running for office. You will feel more comfortable and confident wearing something you feel good in. No doubt your husband will be proud to have you on his arm no matter what what you wear. Go, in the dress you like best, have a good time, and soak up every second of this (possibly) once-in-a-lifetime event.
Cheers,
Kate

You look fantastic in both! Each one gives you a different look.
The red dress- I think it makes you look softer, graceful, slender curves. It's also more conservative. And I love the back of it- looks like a little cape.
The black dress- Are you crazy? There is nothing wrong with your back and arms! You look great! This dress makes a statement- that you are strong, confident and you know you look good.
As for which one is better for the White House... I lean towards the red one.

Given the type of event it is the red is the classier choice. It most certainly does not make you look older or frumpy. The important thing is to feel good in whatever you choose which is always a personal decision.
They both look nice and every woman alive has something they think of as their least flattering attribute. There are ways to not draw attention to the areas you personally don't like. Now as a general rule, if you want to wear something backless that shows off your back, shoulders and arms pair it with
1. a short evening jacket
2. shawl
3. interesting wrap of some sort.
That way you will look sexy, elegant and feel care free. Have fun!

The black one, you look fantastic in it. It's a bit sexy for the venue, but it really seems like you're comfortable in it.. I'm guessing :-)
Also, we are definitely our own worst critics because I have no idea what you mean about your shoulders and arms.

There is no question the Black dress. It makes you look Younger, Sexier and beautiful. I love red too,but the red does not do you justice, that flap in the back is too old and frumpy...its like a curtain. I would kill for your back and arms, isn't it frumpy, or mumsy I agree to ask DL. You do look good in anything though, so its tough. God bless ya., I have to start working out., asap.

I have to agree with the folks who said "red". They both look fantastic but the red is a little more sophisticated for the White House. Can't wait to hear about it. Don't you wish Denis had to worry about what to wear?

Ann,
Hi, back again..was curious as to how the red vs.black voting was going...was reading the comments before I retire for the evening..(sounds better than I'm done with the laundry and my butt is dragging)LOL. Anyway, yes,Sarah I did find my glasses. My 20 month old grandson put "Ahmah's glasses in the box". Translation Grampa had safety glasses on for something and that's where his go, so...Thanks for asking.
Ann, I'm still going with my first instinct, black outfit...though I was thumbing through Denis's book and saw the pic of you both at an awards presentation and I thought maybe the red, Denis was wearing the black tux with the red shirt..(Which I thought he looked great in), which had me thinking about the chapter in his book about womwn vs men getting dressed to go out somewhere...Black, yes DEFINITELY the black outfit. I'm sure.
