I hesitate to interrupt all the introductions with a new blog but I encourage people to keep coming out! I don’t want to say welcome, because many of you have been reading all along, but, it’s lovely to hear all the new voices.
I have been insanely busy, this week and so have many people I know. First, my friend Dani Shapiro has a new book coming out on Monday. The book is called Devotion and it’s a beautiful examination of her spiritual journey in what she calls “the afternoon of life.” Click on her link and have a look at her books and blog and introduce yourselves while you’re there. I’ve already read Devotion and recommend it highly!
I have also been researching animal rescue organizations for my book and would like to call your attention to a wonderful contest that is going on at The Animal Rescue Site. You can vote for your favorite rescue organization and the group that receives the most votes will receive lots of $$$$$$$. But you don’t have to give a penny. I know everybody is giving whatever they can spare to Haiti relief organizations now, so this is a way you can help by just, literally lifting a finger and clicking on the “vote” link. If you don’t have a favorite rescue organization, please vote for Hot Water Rescue New England. This group has saved some of the neediest dogs in New England and could really use the support. Here’s a gorgeous pup that they have saved and are trying to place:
So get out your vote! You can vote once a day, every day.

Dani Shapiro’s book sounds wonderful. I’ll have to finish Why We Suck and Rebecca first!
What a great thing to mention The Animal Rescue Site and it’s contest on your blog. I click on their site everyday, have for years, actually since they started. The contest is so great.
For all the animal lovers on the blog, the Best Friends Animal Society is waiting to gain access to Haiti to help rescue the animals of the island that have been affected by the earthquake. While we have been giving our dollars to the many relief agencies to help humans, please remember all the animals that will also need help. Best Friends went into New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and did a wonderful job of helping all the abandoned animals, and they will now go into Haiti to help rescue as many animals as possible.
I just clicked on the Animal Rescue Site and see that they are also helping collect money for the animals in Haiti, so give to whatever rescue site you wish, but please try to give a little something to help the animals! I’m donating to both!
Isn’t this the book that you mentioned we would be reading after Rebecca? I have Rebecca, The Custom of the Country, The Help on the list just ahead of this one…..and I have to go back to work Feb 2; my knee “vacation” almost over. And I too click on the Animal Rescue Site every day; I discovered it when I was forwarded the Breast Cancer Site which ties in with it, clicking there every day contributes towards mammograms for women in need. So many good causes…..I really like these two because they ask nothing more than a click of a moment.
Oh thanks Barbara, I forgot about the breast cancer site. WIll try to find a link.
Hi Ann, thanks for the heads up about Dani Shapiro’s new book and her website. I just checked out her website and it’s very nice. Also, for you Kindle folks, her book will be on Kindle too.
Being from New Orleans, and having lived there during Katrina, I’m very familiar with the work done there by Best Friends during the aftermath, and can vouch for the worthiness of their organization.
Ann, tried to go to the site and vote for Hot Water Rescue New England, but wasn’t able to on my Sidekick. Boy, do I miss my BBerry. I’ll try again later from my computer.
Also, the name Dani Shapiro sounds so familiar to me…what else has she written?
Catherine, you’re a rock star for making that donation on the lurkers’ behalf to Docs Without Borders. For the past week, my Facebook status has been about Haiti, and not to forget them even though the news coverage might wane. After Katrina, once the coverage died down a bit, a lot of people there felt a bit forgotten, and we can’t let that happen with Haiti, as the long term aftermath and recovery there will be even more difficult than the event itself. I’ve been using my statuses to remind people every day, and list some of the organizations with people on the ground there now that are accepting donations, and I’m goint to add Haters for Haiti to the list ; )
I’m excited about the telethon tonight that will run on all the major networks, and I think the timing is perfect, because here in the states the shock of the first few days has worn off a bit. This will remind everyone that the long road to recovery in Haiti has only just begun. Anyone else planning to tune in?
Yes Barbara, I click through all 6 of the sites listed at the top of their page. If you go to the site Ann mentioned, just click on the tabs at the top of the page for all the different causes they support.
Thanks for this post Ann!!
Kyli, I love that you’re keeping the Haiti situation on the front burner via your Facebook page. I think the best way for people to not start to forget is one friend at a time. I will be watching the broadcast tonight. It gives me faith in mankind when people pull together like this. Love George Clooney!
the animal rescue site, brest cancer site etc. are on the same page. you can sign up to have an email reminder sent to you each day – so easy!
Devotion sounds like my kind of book. Once I finish The Pillars of the Earth (long book) I will read it. I will have to sit out Rebecca, I’m afraid.
Several of you have mentioned Best Friends Animal Society. A few years ago, a dear friend gave me the book Not Left Behind, Rescuing the Pets of New Orleans. Awesome book!
Also, for those of you wanting to see what Wheaten Terriers look like, a great site is baroquewheatens.com. Check out the puppy video, too. High on the cuteness scale.
Ann, great post! I guess I am considered to be in the “brunch” of my life? Not quite the morning, but not afternoon yet either. Maybe a mid-morning snack? (How this equates to food, I don’t know, but I’m rolling with it.) Dani’s book can be a “What to expect when you reach the afternoon of your life” book for me.
I didn’t know about the Hot Water Rescue pups, what a great organization. And so many sweet faces!
Wendy, thanks for mentioning the animals in Haiti, I’d been looking for some information on that. From what I’ve found, there are very few household “pets,” but lots of livestock and strays that still need help.
Sandra, thanks so much for the info on Wheatens, I love the look of the breed but would like to know more. Of course you can email me! I’ll also look into the sites you mentioned. My hubby and I like Wheatens and Schnauzers – we love Shelties (my family breeds them) but we’re limited due to his allergies. Boys. So high maintenance. And I also read Pillars of the Earth, great book! I can’t believe there’s a sequel, my dad told me that recently.
KC – brunch! I’m chuckling at my desk…which is hard to do during audit season, so thanks!
Ann – Thanks for the link. Such an easy way to help animals in need.
Thanks for the book recommendation! I voted for Hot Water Rescue since I don’t have a fave.
Just a quick note to say I checked out the Animal Rescue Site too, and selected Hot Water Rescue New England. It looks like the Meriden ASPCA is in the lead for CT.
KC, I am in the brunch of my life too, but feeling more like I’m in the midnight snack of my life these days. Hot chocolate and cheesecake, anyone?
Dear Ann:
I sent one out, tells me it is the wrong email address… must have been too excited.
So,
Your husband is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l and I could watch this video for ever and ever…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWIREf9p44U
yet, I must make proper hotel reservations in the vast land of LA.
Thank you Wendy about the reminder. Yes, with every catastrophe email alerts go out from a couple of rescue groups I have been supporting for 20years. The donations to all of these organizations stop and are impacted for a year afterward. D.E.L.T.A. rescue out of southern California is an amazing place. Leo Grillo has the largest super shelter I believe. He rescues all of the dogs/cats dumped at state parks/roads/country etc. You can see his work on website/facebook.He survives on donations. So while we are donating to Haiti, because they are going to need long term care/organization, lets not forget our other giving. I also believe at this point, its not product, money, rescue people etc, it’s the logistics and movement. They can only land, what, 17 planes a day? And they have 3X that number to get in. I guess we start praying for the logistical/management team.
Thank you so much Catherine for your generous donation on behalf of us who have come out of lurking and onto to the blog. How incredibly kind of you.
Thank you Ann for another great book recommendation and for the contest information on The Animal Rescue Site. I too voted for Hot Water Rescue after viewing their website.
Cheers and a great weekend to all!
Ann – this is very similar to the contest Rachel Ray had and my friend Susan won $75,000 for her animal hospice sanctuary “Angels Gate”. I just spoke with her the other day and do you know what she’s building with her first $25,000 – a new huge commercial kitchen so she is able to efficiently feed the 200 cats/dogs/horses/pigs/birds/squirrels, etc. I love when they have contests like this. Everyone please vote.
Kim, How nice for your friend Susan. She must be a good soul. Bless her heart.
Ann -
Thanks for recommending Dani Shapiro’s new book. It’s on my list.
I also cannot say enough about Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. I’ve been suppporting them since they started 25 years ago. If you’re not familiar with this organization, I urge you to go to their website. There is also a show about them called “Dogtown” on National Geographic TV (actually a new episode tonight), which is great.
Does everyone know about the Animal Rescue Site link where you click on every day to give food to shelter animals? There is a site called “Freekibble” that does the same thing.
KC – I recommend that you consider a Welsh Terrier. They look exactly like Airdales only smaller (20 lbs). They are smart, funny, tons of personality and one of the milder-mannered terrier breeds. Also non-shedding and hypoallergenic.

i do ‘free kibble’ every day, too – and it’s great for kids! also, i’ve been to best friends and it is heaven on earth … just incredible.
I want to join in with the people saying thanks for the Animal Rescue Site link. I’ll start clicking on it every day, too, as well as other tabs on that page, all for very worthy causes. I put in a contest vote for Hot Water Rescue too. (“Rescuing misunderstood breeds” — what a great focus!)
Kim, how neat about your friend Susan and her Angel’s Gate! What a wonderful thing she’s doing.
Lisa -
When did you go to Best Friends? I want to take a week’s vacation and go there to volunteer. I’ve heard it’s an incredible place. I’ve been putting this off because I know there will be (at least)one special dog there that I want to take home, and I just can’t have more than one dog right now.
Where did you stay?
Linda S.
I will definitely check out Hot Water Rescue. Since my elderly cat died a few months ago (and I’m not getting another for a few months), I want to focus on helping out other animals – in my cat’s honor.
Sandra, are you enjoying Pillars? I know it’s LONG! But definitely worth the effort. Loved it!
linda s. -
we stayed at quail park lodge, but i’d recommend planning fairly far in advance so you can stay at one of the guest cottages on the property. the hotels in town are only so-so. if/when you get closer to going feel free to contact me for restaurant ideas and other suggestions.
as for volunteeting, it will be one of your favorite ‘vacations’ ever! the only way we left without a furry friend was knowing that they are incredibly well cared for. we were in awe of the facilities and the thought and effort that went into making it a true ‘sanctuary’ for the animals!
Pamela,
I am enjoying Pillars. I am surprised that I am, because a nearly 1,000 page book about building a cathedral wouldn’t be one I’d run out to buy. It was a gift, and it was very important to the gift giver that I read it, so I am. He also gave me World Without End…oh joy. Another 1,000 page book. I do like Ken Follett’s no-frills prose, though.
Kim, you’re really friends with Susan from Angel’s Gate? Can you give her a big giant hug from me? I’ve seen her story and donated a few times, what she does is heartbreaking and wonderful all at the same time. She is a hero, bar none. I’ve worked with animals like that at veterinary hospitals I’ve worked at, but to open your home, every day….she is really an angel.
Tracy, thanks for asking about Zeus and Topaz, they’re doing well! I’m still giving Zeus time to come down from the racetrack, but he’s starting to look like he needs a “job” so I may begin lunging him to start re-balancing him and centering his movements. I don’t predict I’ll actually sit on him until end of Feb, after more down time and seeing how he progresses on the lunge line. They are still getting along, so thank goodness for that!
Well, KC, I’m choosing to believe that I, too, am at the brunch of my life. Medical technology is really making some advances and we should all live to be into our hundreds, barring major illnesses. So, looking at it that way, it’s not even noon yet. I must say though, at Petco today, I believe some of the workers thought I was at my dusk. I haven’t showered for days, have been writing in bed with dogs and taking extra-long hikes with pup to wear her down, and I just looked like a hag. I was buying all these dog treats and chew toys for naughty puppy and asked a young man if they sell wild bird food. Something in the way he spoke so slowly to me and sort of guided me to the area, made me feel like he was tending to this doddering old thing who has turned to dogs and wild birds in her fading years. It didn’t help that I kept whipping my reading glasses out of my pocket to peer at the price tags.
My dream is to go to “Best Friends” – how wonderful for those who spent time there. Wow! If I went, I don’t think I would leave. Loved the animal rescue site – I voted for our shelter in the local community – actually its where we rescued two of our dogs.
KC/Arliss/Aislinn- Yes, KC – Susan and I are very close friends. It was she that gave me the contact names of various shelters for Mikey and Riley and if worse came to worse – she would take them. She’s my icon. I also do work for her – getting her calendars out – database stuff she needs help with. Check her website out. Every May I go to Angels Gate and stay with her for 3 or 4 days bringing donations of money and supplies. I’m always in heaven with all the animals she has. Some were abused, abandoned, lame but most are in hospice stage. No animal dies alone. The ones in their final hours sleep with her and having been a pediatric R.N. she monitors them closely for pain and caters to their every need. 100 acres of sheer beauty. She has a soul like no other and she’s hysterical. Many a night we’ve spent with a bottle of wine laughing our butts off. She has a “wicked great” sense of humour.
I’ll be there soon – can’t wait.
Ann, I checked out the voting site and it looks terrific. I sent the link to a few of my animal lover friends, a couple. in particular, one that just rescued a Horse not too long ago and another that works at a “No Kill” rescue for Horses in CT. Don’t have the name handy, but if any readers are interested, let me know. They’re both great. I suggested your vote if they didn’t have their own favorite.
Is anyone watching the Relief for Haiti Special? It’s very good.
Lisa, I’m watching. Just called and donated. Didn’t get to speak to a celebrity, but that’s not why I called. I did have to re-dial about 20 times to get through, and then held for a bit before getting through, so if any of you are planning to call, don’t get discouraged…it’s so worth it. I was actually pleased that I had to try so hard to get through…it means their phones are ringing off the hook, and how could that be bad?
Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, and Keith Urban were just on and were fantastic. What harmonies
Ann:
While I doubt the severity of your tale (I do not care about the clothing or whatever, you are still rather YOUNG!!!!), I get patronized plenty. Then again there is a reason, first one my age and second my accent. So I repeat slowly whatever the heck I am saying and then they get it…
I am glad you are spending time with little Holly, so she settles down somewhat…although she has got to be a happy one to be there ‘with all her sisters’ and with you. She has got to be smart enough to appreciate. Read somewhere (and maybe it was here) that dogs have the intelligence of a two year old. Well… I have known some two year olds that were pretty smart!. I know one thing: they have a human quality to their eye expression, and where would that come from besides intelligence?
And yeap, we are going to live to be 100 and then some, and now the thing is to focus on quality. I took care of some rather elderly people while attending the University in San Francisco (and be able to pay those rents!) and in most of the cases, I would not want it. Then again, if you do not remember, do not understand, maybe it does not matter. I will look into that!!
Thank you for everything.
K.C. – I cut and pasted your very kind blog statement about Susan and sent it to her. I can just visualize this huge smile on her face. Thank you. I’m a New Yorker – the glass is not always half full with me – I have difficulty believing anyone but Susan is truly the “real deal”.
Ann-I’m having serious problems picturing you in a state of “haggery,” (as opposed to the state of casual elegance I’ve witnessed you in so often via this blog!). However, your description was priceless and I thank you for the humour!
US Hope For Haiti watchers- What I’ve seen so far (on CNN) is fantastic! In 30 minutes, we do an hour-long Canadian version and after that, the US benefit airs in its entirety on our main network across Canada. Let’s hope and pray that we all raise lotsa both kindsa dollars…
Ann, Ann, Ann – was it necessary to resort to such behavior at “Petco” no less. Have you lost sight of your senses?
Personally – I try to go to Petco ONLY to pick up diapers for my senile Pom – otherwise I avoid it completely. Too damn pricey. Does anybody have any coupons for Number 2 Huggies – Sure can use them for my 17 year old Pomeranian. Did I mention my 17 year old Pomeranian? Cheese and Rice – she’s a dog that will never die, eats like a buffalo. Don’t get the wrong impression – love her to death but she’s 17 years old – my virginity didn’t last that long.
Ok – other than Tracy – for those of you that do not know me – I’m a bit of a smart ass. So………….do not……….under any circumstances……..unless I call you to task………….take me seriously. Thank you and Good Night.
Yeah KC, if you’re 29 and in your Brunch, what does that make us late 40 somethings in your eyes???? I feel I’m just entering my Brunch, thank you very much! ;- )
Ann, your story is priceless, as usual.
I have so many friends who have been to Best Friends and volunteered for the week. They all said it was the best week of their lives. One couple came home with a wonderful dog, which didn’t thrill their 3 cats, but they settled in fine.
KC, glad to hear the kids are doing well. I hope I can still see them next Sunday.
Kim, you have a Pom? And she’s 17? No, I don’t think you mentioned it. lolol God bless her.
Yes – I have a Pom – Her name is Sasha. I rescued her from a Puppy Mill in Port Jeff when they had a puppy mill in the harbor. She came home with breathing issue at 8 weeks and out of her 17 years of life – she came out the healthiest of all my shepherds. She rules, half blind, half deaf. Ya know what? She’s still gorgeous as ever and smart. She SO navigates inbetween our 3 shepherds. She’s the alpha – the rest follow suit.
Thanks for the info on Dani Shapiro. Looking forward to adding that to my list of must reads.
Hope For Haiti Now just started here. Hope everyone enjoys their night…
Oh! And I will go to the site and vote for your local rescue as we don’t have one here that I am partial to.
Tomorrow I turn 62. If you young girls are in the brunch of your life, does that mean I am in the Pepto Bismol of mine???
My favorite animal rescue group isn’t listed, so I will just put a link here for anyone who is interested. http://shilohhorserescue.rescuegroups.org/info/display?PageID=4095
KC – I got a very thin Off the Track Thoroughbred when I was a teenager. She was a cribber, and they hadn’t kept a cribbing strap on her, she really looked like hell. In a sense, I suppose I rescued her, but at the time I saw her more as an affordable project. In those days, the rescue concept wasn’t as prevalent as it is now.
“Lady Susie” had broken her maiden, so I knew she could run, and I worked with her very slowly and carefully. I remember those lunges and tentative rides, trotting, little cross rails, and the like. I also remember her flipping over backwards with me in the field . . . I was fine, but my new saddle I worked so hard for got scratched.
I’m too old now to start a horse, or work with an OTT Thoroughbred, but I remember how wonderful it was to watch Susie gain weight and begin to bloom. I didn’t know her racing history, but I often thought of the people who bet on her, and cheered her on as she came down the stretch.
I never got the chance to show her, but I had planned on using “If You Knew Susie” as her name if I did — she seems more like a “gal” than a “lady” to me.
I really thought the telethon was great — I cried at Muhammed Ali’s words “Charity begins at home, but it shouldn’t end there.” Jennifer Hudson looked sooo beautiful, I absolutely loved her whole look, and Mary J. Blige was as wonderful as ever. Chistina Aguilera looked and sounded awesome, and Madonna’s performance was very strong. Whoever styled Gorgeous George shaved a couple of years off . . . but unfortunately “Doctors Without Borders” isn’t a recepient charity, so to Brad Pitt I will say “nice beard” and plan on donating to
http://www.firstgiving.com/hatersforhaiti
And if there are any more lurky loos at there “come out, come out wherever you are!”
I put in a “to purchase” request at my library for Dani’s book, they didn’t have it in the catatlog yet. I’ll be the first on the list when it arrives.
And Ann, we do so love your humour, but I am with Lupe and Lynne on how very “hag” like you could have looked. I did, literally, Laugh Out Loud though when I got to the part about your whipping out those glasses. My own most recent episode was just this week when I realized (while standing in line at the grocery store) that I couldn’t remember the last time I had brushed my hair! (It must have been within the past few days right? I was just at the pool yesterday, so it had to be some time before that.) And coming home to find my youngest daughter (and her dog) in the house. She had brought me some slippers, Avon products are showing up everyday around here now. I told her thanks and maybe I could even wear them as shoes, they were that wonderful. She yanked them back out of my hand, with the threat that if I went out looking like this again (or wore these for anything other than their intended purpose) she’d disown me. (I know it’s a hollow threat, who else would dog-sit?)
Hey Julie, I just saw that you and I are on the same late night schedule. It seems to be when I can get all my work done. Kim, how are the puppy’s doing. I’m happy that Northshore was agreeable.
Kim, so funny about your Pom. I always wondered who buys those doggy diapers. When Pongo was reaching the end, he was losing control of his bladder and had all sorts of issues. But we didn’t want to put him down. We would (jokingly) say to him, “Walk into the light, Pongo. Go ahead, walk into the light.” Of course, he was deaf, so he just thumped his tail on the floor. And then peed his bed.
At the risk of being seen as a wicked witch, I just was wondering if some of you know how much money Best friends takes in each year? It’s A LOT. Don’t have exact figures but have been reading a lot about them recently. They do very, very well. Just thought I’d throw that out there. Some of the smaller rescues closer to your home might benefit more from your donations.
Very good point, Ann, and not witchy at all. The more media coverage a rescue organization gets, the more donations. There are needs right in our own backyards, and we should all support our own respective shelters in whatever ways we can – the best way, of course, would be to adopt one of these beautiful animals. Speaking of which, my Ernie will not stop walking on my keyboard.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Here’s an interesting, and disturbing, article on Russia’s stray dogs from the UK Financial Times.
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/628a8500-ff1c-11de-a677-00144feab49a.html
ann – so right about best friends, financially. i give them a small amount, but most goes to my local shelter.
And, I’m not looking to be witchy either, but I didn’t give to the CT shelters suggested. There was one on the site that is in the next town over from me and I decided on a charity begins at home mind set for this, They are getting my vote each day and they got a check today. I want to help those dogs I pass on my way to work !!
Oh and Sandra, I’m 55 ( I don’t quite know how that happened!!), but I do admit that I’m so happy to count every single one of those numbers and am working for another 55….I prefer to think of us as the fine wine set and wonderful after dinner brandy….when there is the time to just enjoy the conversation and good life !!
Kristin – if your speaking of the two dogs Mikey and Riley – I have been emailing my contact for an update but I have not received a reply. I am hoping they have found a forever home. Waiting to hear. Thank you so much for asking.
I just sent all of you an email that I now will be going to the event on the 30th – can’t wait to meet ALL of you. Alan – you truly are a gem for handling the arrangements. Thank you very very much. We are all going to have a blast.
Linda S. – my girlfriend and I were on the phone last night speaking of exactly that – taking a one week vacation to volunteer at “Best Friends”. It would be great to get a group of friends together to go.
Kim, great news about the dogs and so glad you can join us after all!
Speaking of Best Friends, I got an email with the story of a cat that just arrived there with no eyes. Here’s the link:
http://www.bestfriends.org/guardianangel/index.cfm?csid=5173&csii=5174&csit=Set&utm_source=delivra&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Tales+of+hope.+Plus,+an+update+on+Haiti
Click on the link for his progress journal for more. They are such an amazing group.
Happy b-day to Sandra, and Ann too funny as usual. I am at work this morning and I have been listening to Rebecca and really enjoying the book. Ann, is your Daphne named after Daphne Du Maurier? The line “a ranting actress in an indifferent play” just stays with me. I wish I could write lines like that or take pics like MP, they are art forms. I will always love the line “I am sweating like a psychotic horse in a burning barn” … Robin Williams in ” The Bird Cage”, my sons’ favorite movie. Good day to all.
I have been voting for Hot Water Rescue (love that name for some reason), they look like a wonderful organization, but I also plan to spread my votes to include our local no-kill shelter. I’ll try to get as many people as I can tell to get involved, maybe put a link on my Facebook. Has anyone tried this?
Oh, Barbara, I like the fine wine and after dinner brandy imagery to define us. Actually, I don’t think of myself as part of the Pepto Bismol set. I still think of myself as part of brunch. Just more 2:45-ish, less 11-ish.
Thanks Candy for the birthday wishes. It’s a beautiful day.
Ann, your Petco story reminds me of a time in my life when I did not have time to run a comb through my hair. It was shortly after my daughter was born and I had absolutely no idea how terrible sleep deprivation makes you feel. If I had a shower, there was no time to make or eat breakfast. Keep in mind breakfast was a cup of tea and an untoasted bagel with nothing on it and I ate it while I tried to do other things in the house, like the laundery. If I had breakfast, I had to skip the shower. I was trying to find a happy balance in my new daily routine, but a newborn and total lack of sleep just doesn’t allow for that…not until the baby sleeps through the night.
Anyway one day I walked, with my daughter in her stroller, to the grocery store. Keep in mind that I stopped styling my hair, stopped putting on makeup, stopped moisturing my face, stopped plucking my eyebrows and stopped sleeping. I think my clothes matched that day…navy blue sweatpants with a gray hoodie sweatshirt with navy blue writing…the official post maternity fashion/wardrobe I was wearing at the time. I could not find a particular item I was looking for in the store (because I was so tired I couldn’t see my own two hands in front of my face) so I asked for assistance. The stock person who was about ten years older than me helped me out and then called me MA’AM!!!! I wasn’t even thirty years old. It was the first time I was ever, ever, ever, called Ma’am in my life. When my husband came home from work that day I told him that the stock person thought I was the baby’s GRANDMOTHER!!!! My husband thought this was hystercial, however I was serious. Needless to say he did the errands at that grocery store for a while.
Happy Birthday Sandra! I bet you are a young and vibrant 62–what’s age anyway?
This may be a naive question — but I’ve given to the SPCA (in lieu of flowers for my grandmother and Buck Owens), is the SPCA and the Humane Society good organizations to donate to?
Sandra – HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!
Today was a great day – going to share. I had to take one of my dogs to the vet for some bloodwork in the a.m. which I did. After that I took a run over to where my girlfriend opened her own haircutting shop which was today in Port Jefferson (for those that know where Port is). I can’t even call it a shop – its more like a salon. SO beautiful. She has impeccable decorating taste. Hardwood floors, exquisite lighting – I was amazed. Sent her roses for her debut. I hung out for three hours just watching all the well wishers and customers going in and out and utilized myself with a broom.
Then I grabbed one of my shepherds and headed over to a main very busy local highway to help my other friend who owns a no-kill shelter also in the town of Port to protest against a puppy store that just opened on Thursday. So there I am with Tyler and 12 other people holding up signs (ADOPT DON’T SHOP) that were larger than myself. All the cars are beeping away when lo and behold Newsday (THE Long Island newspaper) pulls up taking photos and interviewing. So there I was looking like Brune Hilda with my sweats, no makeup and my Saturday layered look of many undershirts, shirts and sweatshirts while Tyler is sitting there next to his own sign looking like Mr. Majestic (and he is quite majestic). Stood out there for two hours and froze my butt off. The rest of the crew were there for 9 hours. God Bless them. We’re planning on being there every weekend (upon availability) until we shut the guy down. Of course as I’m telling Joe all of this he’s laughing and shaking his head. “I thought you were just going to the vet – your the type of person that goes out for a loaf of bread and comes back with a kitten and no bread”. I really hope my miserable mug isn’t splattered on page 2 tomorrow. What a day!!!
Kim – I like the slogan, “adopt don’t shop” glad to hear that you got coverage from Newsday. I used to live in NY. Do you know if the animal shelter in Port Washington is still open? I heard they are no longer there.
Happy Birthday Sandra!
And Kim, I admire your guts!
Mary Lynn, I like your SPCA question. I don’t know, but am curious to find out along with you.
Great story, Kim! I’ll be tuning in tomorrow to see our own little Norma Rae.
Hi Everyone! I just want to say a BIG THANKS to EVERYONE that voted for Hot Water Rescue. Please do so everyday! I work at the pound that Ann has visited and Hot Water takes a ton of our dogs..the dogs that no other rescue will take because the “issues” that the dogs have…broken legs, mange and other expensive medical issues. They are a very small rescue unlike the Human Society, etc. They do not get alot of donations either, like Ann said… all these famous rescues get thousands donated probably on a monthly or weekly basis. Not to be “wicked” but where are these rescues when I ask for help?? They dont even reply to me. Our pound is in a very ummmm how do I say this..not so nice city, with many not so nice people. We have mainly Pit & Pit mixes in our pound, we have 40 runs and most of the time are full, yes we do euthanize too, we have too. Hot Water took a “bait” dog from me that had so many scars on his entire body that you couldnt even tell what color dog he was, he was totally emotionless. When I told Barb from HWR(Hot Water)she was determined to get him out of there and prove to him what a dogs life should be, he needed weeks of training to snap him out of his emotionless personality, after thousands of dollars and very much love I’m happy to report he is a awsome dog, looks great, lives in a great home with other dogs, and has a great personality now. Its amazing what this small rescue group does for these poor dogs, when I ask for help they are ALWAYS there to help regardless of the dog and its issues. They dont have a shelter–even tho thats the dream of the group..to one day have a building for their group and to save even more dogs then they already do. They are always looking for foster homes too..they cant take a dog unless they have an open foster home, so if anyone would like to become a foster….hint, hint! They would gladly take money donations also. As far as the Humane societies and other popular rescues…lets say they are not all cracked up to be what they say they are….and thats being nice. I know one humane society (in CT)that puts down ALOT of animals so please dont think for one minute these places are non-kill shelters. Sorry to take over…but I had to say Thanks!!!
Hi All!
Ann, I voted for HWR today, yesterday I voted close to home too – Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue in Pawling, NY. I like that they have equine rescues on there too! I’ve been in touch with them about fundraisers (likewise, *Cari* from HWR, if you guys might want to do a fundraiser, please contact me by clicking my name above for more information. It’s my favorite thing to do and I love helping worthy animal organizations!)
Kim, so neat about your friend in Port Jeff! My hubby’s best friend lives there but they just sold their house, I’d send his wife there but she wouldn’t listen to me anyway. Psh! Go you for sticking to your beliefs and standing up for rescue pups everywhere. I will be looking for you in NY Newsday tomorrow morning!
Happy happy birthday Sandra! I am having some Pinot Grigio right now and am giving you a big Cheers! Having said that, I think you can say you’re in the Happy Hour of life…and you know, Happy Hour can start at 2 PM in my book….lunchtime if you’re my boss in NYC. Hah!
Cari: Thank you BIG TIME. THAT was a great piece you wrote.
Christine: If its North Shore Animal League your referring to in Port Washington- yes they are still there and I would say a very lucrative organization. I get mixed reviews on their operation. Can’t say more because I honestly do not know.
As Monty Python would say – “and now for something entirely different” – my husband’s cousin is a director. Mostly horror films. He sent us this link tonight. He resides in Brooklyn and he’s still trying to break out of the “B” mode but the guy’s got a fixation with horror. My hubby has been in a few earlier flix – I don’t know – see for yourself. I just laugh and say NEXT………..
http://www.emergingpast.com/
Christine, I live in Port Washington where the North Shore Animal league is and the Animal Shelter. The Animal Shelter is still open and is a few blocks before the NSAL. So many people drive right by Shelter since they advertisements for the N.S.A.L. is superior. I always recommend the Shelter first. The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter is located on Marino Avenue,www.theshelterconnection.com. Alot of people confuse the two, I believe the N.S.A.L, has a site also. The sad fact is alot of people come into town, seeking the shelter and end up at the N.S.A.L., since the sign for the Shelter is so tiny, and there is a big advertisement for N.S.A.L., so they do not realize the error.
Meg/Christine: Long story short – I had to get in touch with North Shore because I have been working on getting two dogs placed out of a possible “kill shelter”. Upon the advice from Susan at Angel’s Gate I spoke to Mike Malloy who heads up North Shore A.L. – he was an extremely gracious man who was able to meet my needs with the two pets in question. He returned my call immediately and we even missed calls and he followed up and stayed on it. That alone impressed me. I was disappointed with Little Shelter in Huntington and a large rescue who takes in 2.5 million bucks per year. Never returned my call.
Kim, I just realized you call Port Jefferson, “Port”, as I call Port Washington “Port”.. so funny. Oh, well, us small town girls! What is the name of your friends shop? I visit Port Jefferson alot in the summer. Nice work for the “adopt not shop”,protest.Strong work, will I see you in Newsday?? I cannot believe these stores keep opening. A puppy store was just shut down here a few months ago. I keep wondering what happened to all those dogs.
Meg: yes Port. So funny. Both towns are quite beautiful but I have to say your town is a big money town. Shop – well – not sure which one your referring to. My girlfriend just opened a beautiful haircutting place called – Salon Dale. Thats her name Dale. If your talking about a pet thing – my rescuer friend has 2 no kill shelters one of which is new and right at the harbor called “Castaways”. When you step off the ferry and go into the square area it is right there. Its sort of a small satelite location from her larger one. You can purchase cool stuff plus there are cats and some puppies for adoption. So – forgive me – I’m not sure what “shop” your referring to.
Actually – I asked my rescue shop owner the exact same question – what happens to these puppies that don’t get a home – you know what – she didn’t know either. She did say that they sometimes go back to the puppy mill. I’m not sure I want to know.
Meg: are you coming on the 30th?
Meg: coming from Port Washington you wouldn’t be stepping off a ferry – it was just a reference point. Salon Dale is actually on East Main Street. Last time I was in Port Washington – it was because of a reading – psychic that is by Jeffrey Wands.
Ann and Cari-Thank you for the valuable heads up and inside info! I just visited the site and did my vote and click!
Sandra-Happy, Happy Birthday! It’s STILL your birthday evening where I’m from (Calgary, so I am sending you a snowy birthday toast filled with best wishes for the coming year and beyond!
All the best to you,
Lynne
Hi Kim,
Roger Corman gave many great directors a start, so there is definitely something to be said for the “B” pics, and horror. I’m so squeamish, modern horror/slasher stuff is not my cup of tea — but give me “Psycho” and “Carrie” anyday.
Okay, so yes, I am watching the SAG awards, and tonight it really is all about the actors!
I couldn’t act myself out of a paper bag, but I am tempted to try just a little to write myself a small cameo, just so if my dream ever materializes I’ll have more access to more parties.
Betty White is getting her award now (I’m on PST) and it is fascinating — she can really sing. OMG, I can’t believe she called Sandra Bullock plain! She is too funny! Who wrote this speech (well, she probably did) — hilarious!
Animals and acting, and so many laughs . . . thank you Betty!
Kristin, we are keeping the same hours! Nocturnal has always been my first choice.
Candy, “The Bird Cage” is one of our all time favorites. We even quoted it when I gave my hair to my sister right before she passed (she was planning on taking my three and a half foot long braid with her, so I channeled Robin Williams’ character, “how very Egyptian of you” just as he said to Nathan Lane when he had packed a toothbrush for his move to the cemetery).
Ann, I picked up my copy of Rebecca today, thinking I had plenty of days to read it in time for the chat. Um, slight problem when I opened to the first page…. it’s in Spanish! Since I don’t speak Spanish (even though two of my four grandparents were born in Mexico) this could take me MUCH longer than I had anticipated. (I’d ask Lupe for help, but she sounds pretty busy these days, what with escaping the floods and all.) Guess who will be making a return trip to the library tomorrow?!
Kim, I wasn’t able to view the video trailer. And I had the puppy clutched to my chest in anticipation of seeing that scary zipper man. Do you have a link?
Kim, I was able to open the link, but the trailer took too long to download. If the photos on the site are any indication of the trailer, then I’m glad I wasn’t able to open it. Scary stuff! Now, on another note, that Brooke fellow is a hottie.
.I voted last night for Hot Water Rescue and I love the animal rescue site. It is a great site. My friend/neighbor is looking to adopt, so I going to refer her to it. I entered the Animal Shelter in Port Washington, but it did not come up. Kim, I am still trying to make it on the 30th, but I won’t know until later in the week, as far as Port Wash, I grew up here, as did my dad and now my son. I love this town, but never really thought of it as “big money”, yes, there are wealthy homes, as so many other north shore towns, but it has such a beautiful sense of community and that small town feel. I grew up with “little money” so, I never viewed it that way, but I know it may have that reputation also. Sorry I mean’t the shop, that is the haircutting shop, sounds nice. I will def be in Port Jeff again this summer so I will look for it. I don’t get “reference” point?? ferry? sorry, maybe I’m confused or just did not have my coffee yet, I will have to read again, lol. I have to pick up Rebecca today from the Library, but also now want to start Devotion… oh my. Alot of reading to do.
Wow, I just watched the video on Dani Shapiro’s website for Devotion, I’m going to the book store today! I was so moved by it, since I too am asking myself the same questions, at this point in my life. thank you Ann for this link, can’t wait.. thx
Excuse the typo in the previous comment, make that, “Happy Belated Birthday Sandra!!!”
The horror film link: sorry you could not open – just go to:
http://www.emergingpast.com
It should definitely come up then. Tom Churchill is the director and my husband’s cousin.
Meg: Forget “reference point” – was going to give you an idea where the salon was from the ferry but coming from Port Washington – you wouldn’t be taking the ferry. Forget it – I so bungled that one up. Its Salon Dale – East Main Street, PJ.
Can someone tell me when we have to read “Rebecca” by?
I know I supplied the link again – don’t click it from the blog. Just go into your explorer or Firefox and type it in. Maybe that will work.
Kim and Meg,
Thanks for the information about the animal shelters in Port Washington. One of my cousins tried to adopt a kitten from NSAL and they refused to let her adopt based on the fact that she stated in her application that she would let the cat sit outside with her in her backyard in Brooklyn. She argued, pleaded and begged them to change their minds and promised not to take the kitten outside. No dice! They refused to let her adopt the kitten. She left with her three little girls heartbroken. My cousins’s last words were, “I have three children and you don’t trust me with a kitten?”
I love Port Washington. Beautiful area! I loved to shop there and ‘do lunch’ in the summer. I also used to get my hair cut there too!
Devotion is my kind of book!!!! I am going to order it…
Thank you for letting us know about the Animal Rescue Site’s contest…
I did and will continue to vote daily!!!!!
First, thanks for all the birthday wishes! I am enjoying being in the Happy Hour of my life…thanks, KC! I drink Pinot Grigio too, by the way.
Wow Kim, that movie trailer was scary! What is with that zipper man? I had to cover Annabelle’s eyes. She always sits next to me when I’m on my laptop, and I don’t want her having bad dreams! She’s way sensitive.
I’ve been voting for Hot Water Rescue. Sounds like a great group, and it’s very therapeutic for me to vote for them, given my serious issues with Pit Bulls.
Rebecca arrived in the mail yesterday and I just opened it only to realize, I’ll need to go to the eye dr. for some glasses. I’ve been in denial that I need reading glasses, and with the Kindle, I made the font bigger. I’m going to be 42 years “young” in May, and I guess it’s time for me to give in and go to the eye doc!
PS: My original belated bday comment to Sandra didn’t show up, so maybe Ann’s blog sees spelling errors and doesn’t post them. ??
OMG Julie, you made me laugh so hard I started coughing and then choking! llololol The book is in Spanish???? ROTFLMAO Come on, give it a chance. OMG, I still can’t breathe right.
Thank you all for the realization that the well know rescue groups are the ones that get all the money. I never thought about it, I just know how amazing Best Friends is, and have donated to them. I should have known better, having worked with a local cat rescue group for years. The unsung groups are the ones that need the money.
Sandra: I know. Holy zippers!
Court: I went through the same thing then I had the Lasix procedure done. That was a dream. I still make the font bigger on my Kindle and on my computer because I’m just used to it. They call me Mrs. Magoo but I don’t care.
Lasik oops.
Christine:
I don’t always agree with how adoption applications are processed and how they choose the worthy family or individual. I have had problems with an adoption outfit on Long Island called Shepherd’s Hope. They have an issue with everything. Its almost like they don’t even want to adopt dogs out. Their criteria for adoption is absolutely ludicrous. Thats horrible that your cousin had to go through that.
Courtney, I got my first pair of reading glasses at 42. I had never worn glasses, and it took me a while to realize that I was holding the newspaper as far away as I could, and that at some point, I would have to get my cat to stand across the room with it so I could see it. I kept saying things like, “Boy, I must really be concentrating when I read, I keep getting a headache.” When I had my eye exam, the doctor said, “Well, you have reached the Magic Age.” So, I got some cute reading glasses. Now, I have to wear them all the time, because I need a slight correction for distance. Welcome to the Magic Age. That’s probably the same thing as the Brunch of life.
Cari, your post was fantastic. It got me off my rear. I voted for Hot Water Rescue just now and also put the word out on my Facebook page. Voting will now be part of my morning routine.
Mary Lynn, wasn’t Betty White cute! I also thought the dresses were much better (for the most part) than those at the GGs.
Tracy, you have such a good heart to work with the cat rescues. You know how I’m a cat person!
Kim, I barely made it through the movie trailer. I’m such a chicken. For a B movie, though, the cinematography was excellent (from what I could see through one, squinted eye.)
Speaking of one squinted eye…Courtney, I’m 42 and yesterday at the grocery store I was trying to find batteries for my podometer (the originals died from lack of use – ha) and in order to read the writing on the battery, I had to take off my glasses, put the battery about two inches away from my left eye (the near sighted eye) and close my right eye (the far sighted eye). I’ll have to stop teasing my dad now when he does this with his TV remote control. Lordy.
Julie, que pasa!
Sandra, OMG, my eye doctor said the same thing…word for word…”Welcome to the Magic Age.” So now that I’m magical, can I make my a$$ disapper!
…disappear…I need my reading glasses…
Since this post is about a book, I’m going to take this opportunity to urge all writers (and readers) to be aware of the Google Book Settlement. The deadline for writers to opt-out is approaching quickly – January 28th, 2010. That is also the deadline to object to the Settlement.
Google has scanned more than 10 million books without permission, and will control the copyright of any book which is not claimed by the writer, or the writer’s heirs.
Millions of writers are completely unaware that this has happened and will lose control of their copyrights.
The case against Google is very simple — they have engaged in massive copyright infringement, and are attempting to seize control, monopolize the online book market, and add content to their search engine that will generate higher ad sales.
The resulting Settlement is very complex.
I used to earn a living explaining Class Action Settlements to class members (so I know my way around these legal documents) and it tooks me months to decipher the 30 + page notice, and 300 + page Settlement Agreement.
What I did immediately realize is that the lawyers involved will be paid $30 Million dollars, and their incentive to ram this settlement through is immense. A gaggle of greedy, experienced lawyers can be very persuasive in protecting their payday.
The US Department of Justice and hundreds of Opposers (including the nations of France and Germany) forced Judge Chin to reject the first version of the Settlement.
However, Settlement 2.0 (with minimal changes) continues to thumb its nose at Copyright Law, and refuses to inform those (the writers) who it impacts.
If you don’t know about the Settlement, you can’t Oppose it, Opt-Out, or make an informed decision, and that is exactly what Google wants.
The Settlement impacts not only Writers, but Illustrators, Graphic Artists, and Photographers as well. If the Settlement is approved it will completely change the concept of Copyright as we know it.
I encourage anyone who cares about creative freedom, and the creator’s ability to control their own works to at least become aware of the Google Book Settlement.
I encourage all Writers to Opt-Out — you can do that online here: http://www.googlebooksettlement.com/r/enter_opt_out
Please note that supporters of this Settlement (the following website is that of the Settlement Claims Administrator which is a highly paid entity who functions to adminstrate the Settlement and therefore biased toward it) will lead you to believe that by Opt-Outing you will lose rights, not preserve them — but that it total BS.
Going along with Google’s plan (many writers are so exhausted and exasperated with the tediousness of the Settlement they have simply thrown their hands up in supplication — usually at the urging of lawyers looking to get paid) is paramount to approving it.
If anyone has any questions or comments, I would be more than happy to address them. The important thing is to spread the word so that those affected do not lose control of their Copyrights.
Ann – your Petco story is too funny. Nice to know you get down and dirty like the rest of us.
I know Best Friends is doing well financially, but it is well deserved and took them a long time to get there (25 years). I do believe in supporting local shelters and voted for Hot Water Rescue.
Kim – Susan sounds like an angel. I would LOVE to get a group together to go to Best Friends. Since Lisa has been there, she could give us recommendations. How about some time this Spring? Let’s keep this in mind. Anyone else interested?
Barbara – I like your monniker “fine wine set” for us over 50′s. Growing older is challenging in many ways, but it sure beats the alternative!
Linda S.
Linda S:
I am totally game for going this year. Spring might be too close for me. Have some events planned that I am committed to and I believe we want to spend a week at “Best Friends” ???? Don’t let me hold you up if Spring is your choice – just thought we would throw around some alternate dates. I am so looking forward to going there.
I also have another great desire but I was looking at next year to go. I am madly inlove with elephants. Yes – elephants. Their emotional mindsets are incredible and they have a family bond sense towards each other that is unbelievable. There is a an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee. Also on my list.
I am the only one in my family who doesn’t need glasses…yet. I do, however, need sunglasses on most days, my eyes water and I squint like crazy. My eyes are a light grey, I wonder if light eye color affects how sensitive you are to light? Hmm.
Kim, had to mention since you love elephants…try the book “Still Life with Elephant” by Judy Renee Singer. She is the writer of my all-time favorite novel, “Horseplay.” If anyone has ridden horses, or not, read Horseplay! I even had my husband read it and without even knowing what Dressage entailed, he was cracking up. Very funny, but also a very good read. Still Life with Elephant is also super funny but a bit more serious (less goofy) than Horseplay. Either one, two thumbs up and highly recommended from the Thunder Moon Farm Book Review Team!
Sandra, had a wonderful Italian Pinot Grigio last night…I saved the bottle so I can remember to get it again: Caposaldo. I try new wines based on how pretty the bottle is (very scientific) and this one had a deep red label with a Trojan-esque horse head on it. Score!
Julie: Hola, Senora Danvers! Ole!
K.C. – Thank you – I just put it on my “to read” list.
K.C. – you may have tried it but Santa Margarita Pinot is very good.
Kim, since I live in TN i know a little about the “Elephant Sanctuary” in Hohenwald, TN. It’s a non profit that cares for old and sick elephants that have been rescued from circuses or zoos. They have volunteer days but you have to sign up in advance and they fill up fast. I think you can even sponsor an elephant. It’s really a very unique place. Check it out-
http://www.elephants.com
Kim,
I know what you mean about the animal ‘adoption’ process. I agree that the people who are responsible for the animals have to make sure that they are putting the animal’s safety first. I know that they want to find each animal a good home, however, sometimes they really miss the boat and an animal loses the opportunity of being placed in a really good home.
As far as the comments about reading glasses I feel everyone’s pain. It’s happening to me. I wonder if there are contact lenses out there for reading only. I have never worn glasses in my life and it is so weird to not be able to see clearly.
Going totally off the subject my husband has been watching the JETS game. I have had free time due to the fact that I do not watch football. I feel his pain due to the fact that for years and years and years I watched the NY Rangers not win a Stanley Cup until 1994. Once that happened I felt like it didn’t matter if they won another one. They won a cup once in my lifetime and that was good enough for me. My husband had season tickets to JETS games for years when we lived in NY and the JETS never made it to the playoffs or the Super Bowl. Ten men would show up each Sunday at our house with high hopes. I felt their pain even though it wasn’t hockey.
Right now the JETS are losing.
Wow! I just checked out http://www.bestfriends.org/ and can definitely see why this place is so popular! What a beautiful facility and wonderful website. I can really see that there is a lot of money behind this effort, and it shows!
I even found a ole buckskin there in Utah I would definitely sponsor if I had some cash.
I’m in Las Vegas, so if a trip is organized, let me know. Jill and Sally Vandenberg run http://www.shilohhorserescue.com/ in Sandy Valley, which is about a half hour outside of Sin City.
The focus is of course horses, but they also have a quite a menagerie and do welcome guests. In May they are having a clinic with Joe Weitekamp, a local trainer who works with Mustangs.
Oh, and I’ll go vote again for Hot Water Rescue, we vote daily, right?
Christine, there’s no pain like being a Detroit Lions fan which my husband has been all his life. Never been to the Super Bowl. Ever. Lost every game last year and almost all this year. That’s pain.
Christine, one of the best Super Bowls ever–1969, Jets vs. Colts. My Joe Namath led the team to victory.
Sandra – my mom dated Joe Namath! I’m totally serious!
Well, KC, of course I am jealous! I have my own Joe Namath story, though. Twenty years ago, when I was in sales for a housewares company, I worked a special event in Dallas. Joe was there, and he came by and talked to my boss and me. We manufactured some pretty nice woks, and Joe told us his wife recently learned to stir fry. My boss said we’d send them a wok. We got his address in Florida, and sent the wok. A year or so later, I was working a trade show in Denver, and Joe was there. He saw me, and called out, “Sandra!” He left his group, and came over and hugged me and told me they got the wok. Of course, everyone was asking me later what that was all about. I said, “Oh, we dated for awhile when he was in L.A.”
Great Namath story !! My husband is a Raiders fan….they’ve fallen on some hard times too…..of course today everyone but the Colts and _________ is having a tough day.
Wow! I love the Joe Namath stories! Especially the nice spin you put on that hug Sandra! My husband wasn’t watching football in 1969 because he was just a little kid. Too bad! KC I hope your mom has pictures of herself with Joe when they were dating!
Amanda I hear what you are saying. I feel your husband’s pain. It’s tough.
Great Namath stories and the women who loved him. I was mad for him – The Jets would practice at Hofstra U and a few times I went and watched with family members. I so remember that unforgettable Super Bowl. In high school I worked part time as a teacher’s aide. Emerson Boozer came in to meet the 6th graders and I asked him if I could try on his Champtionship ring (how ballsy was I) – of course he obliged. I could have worn that ring around my waist. I think Namath is a little hard on the eyes today – don’t ya think?
Amanda – Huge THANK YOU for that link. Your in Tennesee! I guess I will have to move it along and get my name on their list to go. Thanks for the big heads up. I didn’t think that many people knew about it. WOW. I just adore them.
My husband can’t really appreciate the Namath frenzy then either—he was a Marine in Vietnam, tells me he was busy in those days; no time to worry about the Jets. He was busy worrying about the “other” jets….
“The Magic Age”, I like it and now will book that appointment at my eye Dr. just to hear him say that. Thanks for sharing that with me, makes me feel better about. : )
