I’ve had a few requests for Holly updates, so here she is:

I know that many of you are going to be reading Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca with us, but I’m very interested in what else you all might be reading, or recent books you’d like to recommend.

Between the Shadow and the Soul

Daphne Du Maurier’s classic, REBECCA, is this month’s pick.  If you haven’t read it DO NOT go to Wiki for plot summary. Major spoiler there.  This is a haunting romantic mystery featuring my favorite literary villainess –  the evil Mrs. Danvers.  Let’s discuss on Februrary 25.

I CRAVE YOUR MOUTH, YOUR VOICE, YOUR HAIR

by Pablo Neruda

DON’T GO FAR OFF, NOT EVEN FOR A DAY
Don’t go far off, not even for a day, because –
because — I don’t know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.

Don’t leave me, even for an hour, because
then the little drops of anguish will all run together,
the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift
into me, choking my lost heart.

Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach;
may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance.
Don’t leave me for a second, my dearest,

because in that moment you’ll have gone so far
I’ll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,
Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?

Let’s Chat

43926924.JPG2Tonight we will be having our much anticipated live chat with author Dan Chaon about his bestselling novel, Await Your Reply.  As many of you know, in addition to wonderful reviews, Await Your Reply has been listed as one of the best books of 2009, in the Washington Post, The New York Times, Salon, the Chicago Tribune and many others, and we are very excited to have him here tonight.

The chat will take place right here on the blog, at 8:00 eastern time, and the first 1/2 hour will be questions that have been submitted by you readers and presented to Mr. Chaon, by me. Then, at 8:30, the chat room will be open to everyone, so that you will be able to “chat” with him yourselves.

A Night of Grace, Beauty and Humor

I found this great video of a Momix show on YouTube.  I remember Moses told me once that he doesn’t like seeing Momix on YouTube because the quality is usually so poor, but I thought this was quite nice, so I hope he doesn’t mind if I post it.

Any Questions?

43926924.JPG2I hope everybody has had a chance to finish Await Your Reply, so you’ll be able to participate in next Tuesday’s live chat with author Dan Chaon.

After our experimental chat with Denis, we have decided to try to do things a little differently. The first half-hour (8-8:30, eastern time) of next week’s chat will be a closed Q&A in which I will ask Mr. Chaon question that you will submit to me beforehand.  He will still be answering live, but it will be less chaotic than trying to have everybody ask at once.  Then, at 8:30, I will open it up to a live chat and everybody can chat with Dan Chaon.  Denis actually thought the open live chat was fun and we want to keep that element, but also let people with more serious thoughts and questions a chance to communicate with the author.

You’re Invited

Ekfrasis_back

As some of you might recall, I have been invited to be a part of an exciting art exhibit called Ekphrasis which will open at the Lift Trucks Project in Croton Falls, NY, on January 30th.

If you click on the link above you will see a description of the event as well as the works of art that will be part of the exhibit.  We writers will be reading short compositions which were inspired by the artwork.

I chose this beautifully evocative drawing by Gerard Haggerty, called “Ascension #9.”

Oh Deer

Remember how I was rhapsodizing about what a glorious dog Lulu is?  How beautiful she is, how devoted? How vast her capacity for love?

Well, yesterday she brought us this:

luhoof

You can’t tell what it is?  Well, that’s a dainty hoof on the end.  Yes, It’s a deer leg.  Lulu had thought it would be nice to bring it in and gnaw on it next to the fire.  Like a cave dog.  I admit, we’re a rather primitive group, we Learys. We often do away with proper table manners in order to hasten the speed in which our food reaches our gullets, and one of us makes grunting noises while we eat, but we’re not cavemen.

God Loves a Terrier

Remember Sport?  He’s a very friendly pit bull mix being fostered by my friend Charlotte.  He gets along great with her other pets, is housebroken and neutered.

sportbelly

Well, he was neutered after the above photo.  He’s 8-months old, loves his cuddles:
