Our dear Parisian friend Barbara sent me these lovely Paris photos. Look at this charming table overlooking the Seine:
Wait, are those ….why yes! Somebody is reading both Denis’s and my books at this cafe!
And here, a mysterious couple are about to sit down to a fine French wine while they share my book.
What have we here? Another cafe, another Leary book!
It seems the French can’t get enough of us Learys. Why am I living in America? I’ve never seen my book on a table in a New York cafe, but apparently, you can’t move in a French restaurant or cafe without bumping into a person reading my book.
Well Paris (and Barbara), je t’aime!
Here’s my favorite cafe photo, though:
C’est magnifique!

Iwas going to write something clever en francaise; but it is way tres too early pour moi. That’s all I conjure up. The pics are great especially la petite chien,( I am making the assuption she is female,) Au revoir!
Love it, hope you frame one of those pics.
I LOVE that Europeans take their dogs everywhere, so civilized!
That looks like Jack in one of the pics….. I wish i was sitting having a coffee on that Bistro table right now, instead of Drizzly Connecticut….
Now that’s my idea of Heaven. A Parisian cafe, a glass of wine, an ashtray, and some good reading.
Merci, Barbara!
My wife and I are going to Paris at the end of July for the finishing stage of the Tour de France. We’re staying at the Westin. Perhaps Barbara (or anyone else for that matter) can recommend some nice cafes, restaraunts, etc that are “off the beaten path”. It’s our first time there, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Apparently the French love Jerry Lewis AND the Learys!
A little wine, some funny Learys, and a beautiful Paris. A great way to spend an afternoon.
By the way, that barrel chested dog’s expression is hilarious.
I love the pup in the cafe, he looks like he should be in a maitre d’ jacket and carrying a tray.
Lovely to see your books in a gorgeous setting. Maybe you should start a “traveling book” thing (like the “traveling or roaming gnome”) where people photograph your books in a strange or wonderful locale. Paris is a good start. (but oh, how I cringe when I see a book put pages side down like that, I hate to ruin the binding on a good book!)
It looks like your books are having a fabulous time in Paris (smile).
I love this. The dog is so cute!!!
Okay, here is my shameless plug. Some of you know about my beauty blog and know that I took a break from it. Well, it’s back up and running and so am I. Please check it out and make comments. The link is: http://www.makeupkitty.com
Thanks Ann for letting me do this. Okay, time to go hide.
Courtney, Welcome back, Makeupkitty!
wow – barbara used coveted suitcase space to bring your books…. the highest compliment!
Totally off-topic but must brag that Scot Haney emailed me yesterday to inform me that Friday, the day I was co-hosting Better Connecticut with him, the show was number 1 in its time slot FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE MOVING TO THE TIME SLOT!!!!
Having wild fantasies right now. Trying to keep the phone-line open for the Oprah Network, so please don’t call me to congratulate me.
Love the Basset Hound! At first I thought it was a wooden butler, not a real dog, because it was sitting up so straight. Then I saw the leash. Too cute! Are dogs allowed inside cafes in Paris? That’s pretty neat. Here in California, we can have them in many outside dining areas, but not inside, unless they are service dogs. My dogs are well-behaved (other than their greeting disorder, which all Wheaten Terriers have) but not all restaurants here appreciate dogs.
Hi Courtney!
Congratulations Ann!
Ann…you boosted ratings. HUGE! Congratulations! I see a door opening…
Love the photos! Especially that dog! The French have great taste in literature, don’t they?
We’re traveling there soon & will keep a look out for Leary books.
Congrats Ann! That is GREAT news!!!! OWN will be calling you soon!
Ann -
Totally off topic: Do you find a lot of ticks on your dogs? How do you remove them? We don’t have many in No. California, but when I do see one on Charley I get so flustered I usually can’t get it out.
Also, what do you feed your dogs??
Linda S.
Bonjour dear Ann… Oui your books are being spotted all over Paris, gracing some of the chicest tables… Great fun getting these shots. The original idea was, as suggested, à la “the roaming gnome” – Sandra, Parisian dogs are not only allowed in cafés but restos as well… and they’re so well behaved! The Hound was a paragon of patience; stayed like that the entire time anticipating the tiniest morsel, which she finally got, at the end… Lisa, no suitcases to pack: I live in here
– Dave, more than happy to help – click on my name for my website then contact me – HUGE congrats on the ratings – ps wine and no meal? Quel horreur! Those were peach kirs…
Beautiful pictures !!! Wine,literature and a great location—such a combination !!
Number 1 in your slot…way to go !!! Who knows what opportunity will be next?? Keep us posted…
Off topic… I’ve been reading My Antonia…the discussion is listed for Thursday May 15—but—– May 15th is a Saturday (and I believe you have other plans for that night???). Are we discussing on the 12th instead??
Wow, Ann! That is a ratings victory. Oh, and they didn’t even count all of us DVR’ers out there who caught it that night. That should put you right over the edge. You’re the Ed McMahon of daytime TV. Congratulations!
oops, barbara ~ i thought you were the other barbara and that ann was kidding about the parisian part ….
congrats, ann, on the ratings coup! don’t forget us when you hit the really, really big time.
my dog would never last a minute in a restaurant!
Peach kirs. Delish!
I figured your message was for another Barbara! Peach kirs: very yummy & very easy to make: pour about a thumb’s thickness of peach syrup into a wine glass or champagne flute then top w/a chilled crisp dry white and it mixes itself. Enjoy! Ann, come back to Paris! Bises, Barbara
May I answer the tick question? Linda S., I live in the south so I consider myself a semi-expert on this topic! As a matter of fact I was just putting some Frontline on my dogs this morning. First, take a cotton ball and put a squirt of liquid soap on it. Place the cotton ball over the tick so he’s completely covered by the soap. Hold it there a few minutes, the longer the better. The soap will make the tick release from the skin because he’s drowning in it! Take some tweezers and pull him out making sure not to leave his head under the skin. The site might be red and irritated for a few days which is normal but keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t get worse. I have used this removal method on myself and it works pretty well. I have also heard you can try soaking a Q-tip in insect repellent and dapping it until the tick lets go.
I am also curious as to what the other dog owners here feed their dogs. I have used IAMS for years but am in the process of switching to Blue Buffalo which is not made with poultry or meat by-products or artificial preservatives. It’s expensive but seems worth it. Read the first few ingredients of your brand. You don’t want to see a lot of corn fillers, sugar, or by-products. Our dogs definitely eat better than us!
You beat General Hospital? Way to go!!
Am I the only one with a sudden longing to sit outdoors with a Peach Kir? Barbara, if you use the peach syrup and add champagne is it then called a Peach Royal?
Very nice photos, but more important, congrats on the ratings coup! I don’t live in CT, but did try to find a clip online to check it out; no luck. Maybe they will have you do a weekly spot!
Amanda, thanks for the tip on tick removal. I haven’t heard that one. We never had the problem with ticks in Dallas like we are having here in New York. Also, I started Brody, my golden, on Blue Buff. but it was too rich for him. He is now on Ukanuba, which isn’t great, but we travel a lot, and take Brody with us. I want to be able to buy his food at any pet store. I have been planning to change, just haven’t yet.
Congrats Ann, That’s fantastic!!!
Louise ….for our date ..do you know what i look like or should i put a red rose in my hair??lol….
Hi Cynthia. Champagne makes it royal but when ordering you’d ask for a Kir Royal Peche. Btw you can use a peach liqueur instead of syrup. No you’re not the only one w/a sudden longing to sit outdoors w/a Peach Kir; you’ve got plenty of company over here that’s for sure, especially if this weather holds out!
Barbara a Paris, the next time I am in Paris (fingers crossed), I am doing the “Eat Like the French Day” avec vous.
Aislinn – It would be a pleasure. Hope to see you here!
CONGRATULATIONS on the wonderful ratings. We all knew this would happen Ann. Call your agent!
Love the pictures of Paris. I wish I could just jump into the photos…the sun…the water…the wine…so romantic.
Oops! And the books, of course!!!
The books look to be enjoying a nice weekend away together .Reminds me of a story that was in the papers here years ago .A garden gnome was stolen from a ladies front garden one night . Over the next few years the lady received photographs of the gnome from tourist hotspots all over the world .He was on the beach entertaining semi naked local ladies,at football matches ,boating on the river Rhine, nightclubing and even scuba diving .This went on for a couple of years until one morning he reappeared .Nobody ever found out who had taken him .From what I remember the gnome wasnt complaining!!
Ann, I not only can see you on a morning show like Better Ct, but for me, Meredith Viera has to go., she’s out, your in… I found you to be so funny, interesting and a natural. I hope you do it again… if not Oprah, Matt may call, watch out Scot!
Michael, since we’re on a bit of a French theme here, there was a French film called Amelie, with Audrey Tatou, and part of the story centered around a garden gnome that she stole from her father’s garden. She travelled around the world with it, taking Polaroids of it in different locales along the way. There is a Travelocity commercial here in the U.S. that I think stole the idea, and it sounds like your story may have actually inspired the movie.
It seems to me that the life of a garden gnome is much better than the life of Riley.
I could be a garden gnome. I meet the height requirements.
LOL!!!! Colleen! Stop making me laugh, I don’t have time, I am watching the sox, ordering daughter’s riding boots on line and got sidetracked an ordered myself some shimmery Mac powder…yes… your fault. Gnomey.
Colleen, you’d look lovely standing under my bird bath!
Aislinn *snort* hahaha!
oh and someone off this blog bought me a double layer box of chocs Saturday,I just ate the last one!! *pig* I am not mentioning no gnomes.
Aislinn, as long as I’m under the bird bath that’s great. In the bird bath I tend to drown.
Bev, at least you didn’t have to wrestle Sophie for the chocolates. She is a little taller than you.
6 inches taller than me… or maybe a little more… hehehe
Amanda -
Thanks so much for the tick removal tip. I will try it the next time I see one of the little buggers.
Linda S.
Colleen, LOL!
Did anyone see the picture of the little six pound minature horse in New Hampshire in the news today, soooo cute. Watch and see, Ann will have a house horse soon!
An obit for Libby Post,
should not contain jokes, or a roast,
it should be right and proper,
still etiquette couldn’t stop her,
the old biddy finally gave up the ghost!
I was seriously considering activating my Twitter account or signing up for a new one — at least it would make me write less. The above is more than 140 characters, but this Hillbilly Haiku (with a nod to Amanda) isn’t –
fixin’ to commence
a remodeling project
can’t polish a turd
Oh, Colleen–very funny!!
Maybe Ann could start training seeing eye mini horses for Muslims. I like the ring to that “Mini Horses for Muslims”.

Oh, Paris. Le sigh.
The only French-ish thing I’ve got are Pillsbury Crescent Rolls in my fridge.
Love the cafe Basset!
Devin organized your fridge? Does she want to come over here? There’s a lot less food to organize, I promise!
Congratulations on bringing Better CT to the top! Scot will be sending you flowers and chocolates soon. But I hope he doesn’t send you any Mexican corn pita thingies.
Congratulations to Ann!
Twitter is cruelly mocking me — You don’t have any followers just yet. You probably will soon, though!
Way to rub it in . . .
Ann, This just confirms that the French really do have great taste! Congrats on the ratings coup—just make sure your next show is broadcast in Canada, too!
http://twitter.com/MLCabrall/status/12987587965
Sigh . . . this is just pathetic.
Congratulations Ann on the news from Better CT! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that we’ll be seeing you more often, perhaps as a regular sub for Kara???
Mary Lynn, I followed you this AM! Let Twitter mock you NO LONGER! [G]
Amanda asked about what we feed our dogs-I mentioned this on my blog yesterday, since the pet food scare a few years ago, I’ve been feeding my German shepherd mix Louie a homemade mixture from a recipe that a canine nutritionist gave us to help our full blood German Shepherd girl with her Degenerative Myleopathy. Teqy passed away 5 years ago, but I really do believe the change in her diet made a big difference in her mobility and comfort during the last year of her life.
Ingredients include ground beef, liver, sardines, pumpkin, zucchini, parsley, carrots, sweet potato, rice and oatmeal. I make up a big batch every 2 weeks or so and freeze it in plastic bags. Louie likes it and most importantly, his health and weight are excellent. I also put down a dry food for him that he will occasionally snack on. I was feeding him Timber Wolf but they’ve gone out of business, so the next bag I get will probably be Blue Buffalo.
Thanks Jan, Once I figure out how to get video out of my camera and onto YouTube I will be officially au courant, and hopefully I’ll begin to bore even myself. Then I can take up more productive pursuits . . . knitting or something.
Really it was Denis’ tweet about the new Twitter payment plan that made me do it.
Colleen, I am still laughing. You are one funny gal!
Ann – Congrats on the ratings! See, we all told you that you did a great job.
Bev – You are so funny. You can wear the red rose, or we could have matching “we love Ann & Denis” shirts made up! That should make us stand out in the crowd.
Love it! And that dog is hilarious! I missed you on Better Connecticut! I was totally bummed. I thought I had it set to record on the dvr and we were off to NYC for the day. When I got home, I couldn’t believe it wasn’t there.
Do you know if it’s going to replay or if I can see it online?
Mary Lynn,
I’m trying to follow you on twitter, but I’m doing something wrong…this is what happens after WINE with LUNCH!!
If you’ll click on my twitter account, I should be able to find yours. I’m at cynthiadoran. Anyone else that wants to follow or be followed, feel free.
This is why I don’t normally indulge at lunchtime!
Cyn, I’m booking you for a TUI. Tweeting under the influence.
Ais, you are very funny…guess you weren’t indulging at lunch.
But then again, you are always funny…
Hi Cynthia, I found you and am now a faithful follower. I think twitter’s search capability is suffering from the same problem myspace had — it just doesn’t work very well.
I go to Google and enter “(fill in name here) twitter” to find people’s accounts. So who is fun to follow? I wish Anna Nicole Smith were still around, I’m sure she would be a hoot. Lots of TUIs.
Actually, after reading this article in the NYTimes http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/29/fashion/29twitter.html?hpw
about the Twitter police — Aslinn you are like the Twitter State Trooper — I have the urge to be called out on the carpet for bad tweets. Must resist. . . so many twitter offenses — Twitter TMI, Impersonating a Celebrity Twitters, Twittering with intent to sell . . .
Blind-sided with Oscar in hand,
our sweetheart could not understand,
how her husband James, Jesse, could make life so messy,
now it’s baby makes two, ain’t it grand?
Mary Lynn:
I was kind of hoping that this couple would stay together. For starters she could ask his face:
“Okay buddy, what PART of Marriage 101 is it that we need to repeat”. She truly liked him. He seemed sincere… what gives? some strange female or group of ‘ones’ that look like a caricature from a science fiction comic book?, with the antics of a cobra, going public, and going public for what??? good old money!
The other thing is that her job is extremely exhausting, and I do not care if others disagree, but a 45 year old making (and keeping) that sort of an income and making it grow… over her young years…has a hell of a schedule between the business end of it, the physical needs of dieting and exercising (okay some surgery too…) and the traveling??. Her friends (her world, what she knows) did nto accept him. And what does he do? Go run around with a bunch of weirdos and back stabbers… Hate it.
I hope Sandy does not take it personally. I hope that she feels no more pain or anguish, that she does not stop believing in herself. What in the hell did he do that for?
Now that I have vented a bit, I shall go mind my own business…. Doing well in the classes. At the end I will qualify as a critic… Oh My God (I am one already or was before the class)(and now the tools..)
The guy who co-wrote this — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXldafIl5DQ&feature=related has passed at age 90.
RIP — Furio Scarpelli.
Lupe, I don’t usually judge other people’s domestic situations, but the guy had a terrible track record. I have a hard time believing she didn’t see this coming, especially since he (with Sandra’s money?) paid $700,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit against him while they were married. And then there was the ex-wife . . .
Anyways, the divorce papers pretty much say it all – “The marriage between Petitioner and Respondent has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectations of reconciliation.”
I think America’s Sweetheart took a walk on the wild side, and is now living to regret it. I feel for her, I’ve been there myself. The key is LIVING to regret it, and not becoming a victim to violence, or incurable diseases.
Hopefully, Mr. Jesse James is nothing more than a mistake she could afford to make.
i look forward to the day that my novel is being enjoyed by someone at a cafe in Paris with a nice glass of wine. i hope someone sends me photos when that happens.
