A Possible Fuel Alternative

IMG_1257

This past weekend we had a gathering of Roxbury’s Finest. Oh, wait, I think that’s what you call the cops.  We only have one police officer in Roxbury. And I guess he’s fine.  You could perhaps argue that he’s among Roxbury’s finest.  Anyway, we, Roxbury’s Bravest, all got together last Saturday.  Oh yeah, the firefighters would be Roxbury’s Bravest. What are the EMT’s called? Roxbury’s Best? Roxbury’s Most Excellent?  The Pulse of Roxbury?  Roxbury’s Very Life’s Blood?  Well, as you can see in the photo above, we’re certainly Roxbury’s Happiest.  And why were we so happy last Saturday?  Because we were waiting for the newest addition to our lifesaving fleet – a brand new Ford F-350 pickup truck.

So She Thinks She Can Dance

Remember India’s baby?  My friend Jenny Carolan, her owner, recorded her first wobbly steps just a few short months ago.  Now baby has shed out her dun-colored newborn coat and is a stunning black beauty, just like her mama.  Here’s a recent video in which Clara the filly is shown busting out some new moves.

I was in a rush so excuse the sloppy editing job please. And, if you can’t view video, click here.

A Day Trip

I have decided to post photos of our little lake cottage. Remember the little fixer-upper I was telling you about?

Well, here it is:

This is the view from the terrace:

There’s a simple garden out back:

And a little something that Denis sculpted:

He admired the way I was drying my ass when I climbed out of the lake and so he told me to freeze and then he quickly chiseled my image into a slab of marble that was lying around.  Then he built the little brick portico…

What Candace and Pepper Found

Last night I had dinner with my friend Candace Bushnell. She showed me a video of some very young snapping turtles that she and her perfect poodle puppy Pepper had found in her yard yesterday.  They had been out walking when Candace noticed what she first thought was a leaf scooting across the grass. Then she saw another one. Then she realized that she was traipsing through a little snapping turtle nursery. She recognized them as snappers by their pointy snouts. She didn’t like where they were, so close to the road, so she transported them to a stream and watched them turtle earnestly away.

Custom of the Country

Today is the day we had set aside for our Custom of the Country discussion. I thought that this time we should just have the discussion here. In the comments. That way, people don’t have to be home at the one hour time designated for chats. You can just throw your comment into the discussion any old time. I’m hoping that you guys enjoyed reading the book and look forward to hearing what you thought about it.

My Beloved Eyesore

Our lakehouse eyesore has no running water or electricity yet, but it is still on a beautiful part of the lake that I have fallen madly in live with.  I go there every day just to gaze out at the water from the open windows. There’s always a cool breeze and sometimes in the late afternoon, if the light is right, the dull, moldy walls of the eyesore are transformed into undulating waves of dazzling motion and the rooms feels like it might just float right out across the lake and over the hills beyond.

Empty Nest Update

I just wish Devin’s college was a little closer so we could see her more. It’s been ten days since she left, and so far I’ve only been able to visit her twice. Also, Denis visited another day for lunch. Oh, and she’s here right now. Her classes were cancelled for today and, well, do you have any idea how hot her dorm is? She called and explained the heat situation and we urged her to hurry home before she expires from heat stroke. People die all the time in dorms from the excessive heat, I’m sure. I just don’t think it’s talked about enough. Oddly, she wants to go back today. For the weekend. What on EARTH could she want to do on a boring old college campus on a hot weekend, when she could be home watching us argue about air-conditioning and how much to feed the dogs?
