Last Sunset of 2010

A Fun Task

This blog’s beautiful prima donna needs a name.   Yes, the enchanting filly who was born a rare and beautiful pewter color and has now turned into a black beauty still doesn’t have an official name.  Her owner, Jen, must come up with a name to list in the breed registry by the end of today, because it’s the end of the year in which she was born. Does anybody like thinking of names?

It would be best if the name begins with an ‘e’ or an ‘o’.  That’s just what I’m told, I’m not sure why.

A Year-End Inventory

Yesterday, a commenter, Vennie, posted here that that she does an end of the year blessings list.  I think it’s a wonderful idea. I won’t post mine here.  I worry that it might sound braggy, but in fact, the things that I feel most blessed with are very personal things having to do with love and friendship and family and not possessions or accomplishments.

Be Wicked Careful

ERGS, Urges, True Grit and Other Stuff

I hope everything you gave and received for Hannukkah/Christmas brought you all joy this season.  I’m doing our final end-of-the-year charitable contributions so I’m still enjoying a little bit of the Christmas spirit.   My favorite gift this year?  Denis and the kids gave me an ERG rowing machine!  You know, so I can train for my title.

Weather Advisory

We  just got the “be prepared” email from Bernie, our EMS chief, so, though it’s nice and cozy inside, I have my coat, boots and radio at the ready.  But, guys, it’s really snowing out there, so if you live in my town, please be careful and don’t fall on the ice and break all your teeth and crack your head open.   You would also be well-advised to not handle any cutlery that might fly from your hand and straight into your eye – you don’t think that can happen?  I’ve got a little EMT textbook I could show you that is filled with photos that would make your stomach turn. Objects impaled in eyes? Happens all the time.   Also, why not stay at home tonight, the roads are very icy and you could easily spin out of control and land in a semi-frozen lake and then what?   You’d sink before we could even get there is what.  I’m not saying it would be a hassle to rescue you or anything, of course we’ll be happy to accommodate you anytime, but try to sit quietly until the roads are clear tomorrow.

Readings For A Christmas Day

I am always delighted and astounded to learn that so many classic poems and works of literature are available for free on the web. Last night and this morning I read Dicken’s A Christmas Carol which I hadn’t read since I was a kid, and if you have never read it because you’ve seen the play and/or the movie, you’ve really missed something beautiful and wildly entertaining. You may read it in its entirety here.  It’s quite short. Allow me to share a couple of excerpts. First, a description of Scrooge:

A Holiday Tour

Edgar Allan Pony and Betsy

Yes, the blog update/makeover has been completed.  It’s a little different than the old format so I thought I’d give you a little tour.

Remembering Tuco

As part of my new and improved blog (they tell me the new format will be up any day now), I have decided to occasionally profile famous people’s pets, as I believe that you can learn a great deal about a man or woman by the beasts they choose to share their lives with.

My first such profile is of Candace Bushnell’s beloved  Tuco, who died last spring, so this will be more of a eulogy to a great and sadly missed dog.  At the end of the post, please click on the link so that you may hear Candace and I discuss her home and her writing habits in our recent IN HOUSE interview.

Announcing IN HOUSE Week

Bothanica 90

I have recorded a series of interviews for my little NPR show IN HOUSE, and I will be featuring one each day for the next several days.

Today, please enjoy a recent conversation I had with our friend Moses Pendleton about Momix‘s upcoming show, Botanica, at the Warner Theater in Torrington, CT.  The shows are on January 8th and 9th, 2011.  The interview is right here.

If you’d like to see a little preview of the show, click here. Go ahead, have a look, you’ll be glad you did, and then you’ll want to buy tickets to the show, and you may do so by clicking here.  This is such a beautiful show.
