A Fun Task

This blog’s beautiful prima donna needs a name.   Yes, the enchanting filly who was born a rare and beautiful pewter color and has now turned into a black beauty still doesn’t have an official name.  Her owner, Jen, must come up with a name to list in the breed registry by the end of today, because it’s the end of the year in which she was born. Does anybody like thinking of names?

It would be best if the name begins with an ‘e’ or an ‘o’.  That’s just what I’m told, I’m not sure why.

The sire’s name is Octavius, the mother is India.

This would be her “show name” not her “barn name.” In other words, it doesn’t have to be a name that’s easy to use when calling to the horse. It’s the name that will be announced when she trots into the hunter show ring in all her splendid glory. Everybody remarks on this filly’s beauty and the most amazing thing is that she has the most easy-going and sweet disposition of any foal that Jen has ever worked with.

Any ideas?

  1. I know this sounds like I have too much time on my hands ( I don’t–lots to do and I go back to work Monday ), but I went to a website listing ancient Greek and Roman names–inspired by Octavius, I guess. These seemed to be the best–all of Greek origin, and I included their meanings

    Epaphroditos “lovely, charming”

    Euanthe “flowery”

    Eudoxia “good fame”, “fame, glory”

I’m not especially clever or creative with names–my daughter is Elizabeth Grace, old traditional names; even the dogs aren’t particularly fancy–penny, apple, pippy.

Happy New Year to all !!

  2. Good morning, I have a few ideas. I was working with the sire’s and mother’s names (Octavius, India). One idea, not an e or o is Julia, as Julia the Elder is the name of the emperor Octavius’s only daughter. Then I started thinking geographically, and looking at cities between Rome (emperor’s home) and India. So other suggestions are: Egypt, Istanbul, Olympia (ancient greek town, original home of olympic games), Ephesus (ancient greek town, at one point the 2nd largest city in the world and home of one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world), Edessa or Orestiada. I also like the name Olivia, or Oliva, which is olive in spanish.

    • These are WONDERFUL. Thanks Andrea

      • You’re welcome! I have a question. My husband Joe and I were watching episodes of season 4 of Rescue Me,and Denis’ character suddenly owns a wonderful BIG dog in a few of them. Was that your dog or an actor dog? Cheers! Andrea

        • That dog was Charlie, owned by a woman who is a professional animal trainer for television, movies and stage. Denis wrote an Irish Wolfhound into the script and Bambi, the trainer had to buy a pup and train it for the show. He was a GREAT Irish Wolfhound and at the end I asked Bambi if I could buy him from her for Denis, as our beloved IW Clancy had just died. But Bambi and Charlie had bonded and though she could have used the money, I’m sure, she runs a wonderful animal sanctuary in PA, she wouldn’t sell him, because of their attachment. Which made me admire her very much.

          • Thanks, Ann! Happy New Year to you and your family.

          • I just read your response Ann. I loved the dog in those episodes. But his character sort of fizzled out? Or maybe I missed an episode? What did happen to the dog?

    • Clever Andrea….I like those suggestions

  3. CHRIS ELLIOTT says:

I think ‘Ebony Rose’ is lovely

  4. I think she should be named “Orla”, after my sister’s twin, who looked just like this little filly when she was born.

Orla is a Gaelic name for “Golden Princess.” Okay, she’s pewter, not golden, but she is priceless.

  5. I love the names OFELIA,OLYMPIA, ELEKTRA , or ELFLEDA
From the Old English name which means “noble beauty “noble”and flæd “beauty.

  6. Ovation–because that’s how I felt when I first saw the video of that baby.

Another Netflix streaming video I forgot to mention is North Face. Amazing, true adventure story that you will never forget once you see it.

My theory on life–forgive but don’t forget. Fool me once, shame on me…. I think even the Dali Lama subscribes to this. Also — men will never understand how much your best girlfriend can hurt your feelings. They have NO CONCEPT. One of those issues where you just put them on ‘Ignore’.

  7. Just learned that the e and o suggestions are because the father’s name is Octavius and the mother is Elfengold! Elfengold! I just love that and I think Aislinn’s Orla (Golden Princess) is even more fitting.

When my daughter was a little tot she had the mind of a poet and came up with the most wonderful names for her stuffed animals. She named a stuffed dog “Delilah Boneflower”. A three year old!

    • Delilah Boneflower. I love that! That would be a great name for a heroine in a children’s novel. That Devin was some smart three year old!

  8. Kim Long Island says:

I like Opal Eye and Emma’s Orchid. She looks a little girly girl.

  9. I was going to say Olivia, as well, though the name does call to mind more of lounging around in diaphanous dresses image than the smart, clean lines and energy of hunter pace. Elektra sounds perfect for a female horse of strength and agility with a sun-bright personality. And while I’m mad about the name Orla, I think it needs some oomph. My grandmother liked to add colors or months or flowers (don’t ask me why) to her horses names, such as Orla Gold or Orla Blue, Orla May or Orla June, Orla Rose or Orla Dahlia. She had horses named Suzie Snowdrop & Rebecca Blubell. I just loved that tradition of naming.

FUrther thoughts: Ariane is a Welsh name meaning “silver” (I like the idea of maybe going w/silver in her name since she has gold in her ancestry), Ciara is an Irish name meaning “black,” Leila is an Arabic name that means “dark as night,” and one of my faves, Tatiana, of Latin origin, means “silver haired girl.”

OK, I’ll stop now ;0) Good luck with the naming!

and Happy New Year to all ~

  10. Ophelia is the first name that came to mind but I do love several of the other suggestions including Orla.

  11. Jackie Crash says:

How about all three and go with An Equine Indigo?
Okay, okay, okay…I’m bad at naming cats, nevertheless horses. How about Eugenia? Indira? Aubergine?

  12. So many great suggestions. I really love Orla!

  13. Betty Spencer says:

Hi, What a gorgeous filly!! I bred horses for sometime and naming them is great fun, yes, we love to hear a great name over the loudspeaker in the show ring. Here are some suggestions: Esterwine & Eugenia(Catholic Saints), Eudaemonia(Mona) & Eudora-Greek mythology. Evangeline(from poem) and Opus One(for fun). Also fun and very down to earth– Earth Angel and Out of Bounds-(I play golf now).
Good luck with this beauty–I am sure she will find just the right name.
    Betty

  14. Opulence.

What better to describe a beautiful filly than with abundance, extravagance and wealth?

I had a TB named Standing Ovation, and we’re in the process of having Akindale horses named for the show season to campaign, and my Akindale horses will all begin with “Akindale’s” for good PR. So the announcer would say, “Now entering the ring, Akindale’s Charisma.” We could just use their Jockey Club names, but let’s face it, some of them are just plain stupid.

I can also confidently say that I don’t know of any other horses with Opulence as a show name! Heck, I might just keep it for myself if Jenn doesn’t use it. I already have a Resilient (Zeus).

  15. What about Eve, as in New Year’s Eve?

  16. Ovidia – she who takes care of the sheep

  17. Kristinseattle says:

Love that Ophelia. How About Elenor? Gone in 60 seconds fast.

  18. Ilaria
    Hyacinth
    Olympia
    Eudroa

  19. I love so many of these, especially Orla and Opulence!

More ideas: Opal, Olive, Olivia … Esprit, Ethereal, Evanescence …

  20. … Evening Gown …

Oh, I love the name Eleanor!

  21. OK, here’s my official suggestion:

    Eloquence.

So fitting a name to emerge from Ann’s blog.

And just now, “emerge” made me think of Emergence … then I realized how appropriate that would be, with you being an EMT and all!

  22. She looks like an Evangeline to me.

  23. Jodel in the 510 says:

I know I’m late on this – but my my father’s last name is Donato de Oliveira – and if you used part of this – she would be ‘of the Olive tree’ – which I love and say and breathe all the time.

Blessings to you and your family.

    Feliz Ano

  24. Octavian’s Ebony

If it’s Hunter/Jumper shows they should have no problem with that. You could do something with random letters and numbers, that seems to be the rage or maybe it has meaning with lineage.

I loved watching this video at work the first time you posted it. But at home now my son gets to watch it, and he loves it. I think we are on the fourth replay once I stop typing.

    Happy New Year!

  25. So, I’m dying to know – what name did Jen finally bestow upon the filly?

    Curious Me

  26. Jen Carolan says:

Thank you all for your help! There were some really great and thoughtful names!!
I tend to over think this whole name thing. Sometimes they just come to me and I’m hooked, and other times….
So, along the lines of Elfengold and the fairy tale theme, I went with “Enchanted.” Of course I’m biased, but I’ve found this filly enchanting from her first day!!!
We’ll see how well the name sticks, for now it works!
    Thanks again!

  27. Lovely! And Chanty is a cute short version.

  28. Beauty & magic, possibility & adventure & sheer delight bloom out in Fantasia-esque colors from the name Enchanted. Please give her a carrot or apple from us!
