Let all Success be Nobleness

Just a reminder for you Connecticut folks, I’ll be on Better Connecticut with Scot Haney at 3:00 today.

I was finally able to get my latest snowstorm video to load onto YouTube. I had to switch the music but now I’m glad because I like this better. Our own Phil H.’s great aunt wrote the lyrics to the song, which are not included in this version. But we all know them. Today it made me think about the tragedy in Arizona, and also the brave men and women serving overseas. Especially this verse:

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

  1. music is just perfect for this video. thank you for sharing.

  2. Linda Hatch says:

Loved the video and the music. It was well worth the wait.

I am seeing a Dr. this morning. My chest feels heavy, and the cough is different.

  3. Thanks Ann for the beautiful poem and video. The music was perfect and the scenery is so awesome. Have a great day! On a funnier note- how does Denis like your “dog and pony” show?? Ha!I just thought of that one today :) He must just say “Okay honey- whatever you want. One more horse? Sure! Another dog? Sure! Why not?” He better- you are worth it.

  4. Loved the countryside scenery, I can’t believe the road! Good thing you have a truck. Good luck this afternoon with the show.

  5. What beautiful scenery! I think the music was very moving with the images. That song always gets me, and I loved reading the verse you included, Ann. It isn’t one that most of sing, so it was lovely to read and ponder the meaning of those words this morning. Phil Holland has obviously inherited his great aunt’s way with words. I always love it when he pops in with a little verse for us.

Have fun on Better Connecticut this afternoon!

  6. Beautiful music and scenery! I do love winter…

Yesterday, I went to my parent’s house to help them shovel the roof of their sunporch!!!! Can you imagine? The ceiling was starting to buckle!

  7. Catherine says:

Phil Holland’s great aunt was Katharine Lee Bates? How did I not know this. Fantastic!

Beautiful video and lovely version of the song.

Good luck with your gig today, Ann. Can’t wait to see a video of it.

And P.S., Dracula is scary! I had to sleep with my little night light on last night.

  8. I had a BLAST on Better Connecticut. I know somebody commented that I should bring Gomer on the show, and in fact I did! Scot asked me during a commercial break how many dogs I have, I told him 4 and mentioned that one was in the car. He said, go get it, the next guest makes homemade dog treats. I think he imagined a lab or something. Gomer was just a perfect gentleman. Walked onto the set and lay at my feet and gazed into the camera. Later, we were doing something and Scot was holding his leash and he let him go and Gomer casually walked around the studio, greeting members of the audience and the grips and sound guys. They only have short clips on website but here’s one where you can see Gomer at the beginning:

  9. Linda Hatch says:

I saw a doctor this morning and got something for my head and something for my cough. Went to the hairdresser this afternoo so now I don’t look like big Edie. Honestly, I don’t feel much better at all, but tomorrow is another day.

  10. I just watched the show, which I had DVR’d today. Ann, you look so comfortable, and it looks like you’re having a great time.

And your laugh – hysterical! I mean that in a good way. A laugh should be hysterical.

  11. That was so serene and a beautiful tribute to those who put our country first in their lives. Thank you.

  12. Very thoughtful Ann!

    • Cupcake, (I feel funny calling you that since we just met)….I took a peek at your blog….it’s lovely…can’t wait to try some of the recipes. Your food photos are beautiful. Where in Canada are you? (Just in general, you don’t need to give a GPS location if you don’t want to)

  13. Yay I am so glad it went well for you!
I love that video also thanks for sharing

  14. OMG
I just noticed an email I sent today apologizing for my grammar and stupid spell check changed it to grimmer
Does anyone else find that hilarious?

  15. Wow, what a terrific post and video. I’ve always loved “America the Beautiful” and found it to be very moving. How neat that our own Phil H’s great aunt wrote those wonderful words! Ever since 9/11 especially that song will always resonate so powerfully, with the line ” … whose alabaster cities gleam/undimm’d by human tears ..”

Such a lovely, peaceful few minutes.

  16. Dear Linda,

Keep me updated on how you are doing. I believe one should receive the flu shot once a year and a pneumonia vaccination every five years, especially for the elderly, children, and those recovering/dealing with serious illness. Don’t quote me, ask a MD to make sure. Hope you feel better.

    • Dammit I just can’t seem to hit the “reply” link so my response will turn up in the place it should. I’m not used to this new and improved blog yet. Am I getting older? Radio fried my brain? Or more likely just plain goofy and so technology challenged it verges at the edges of Greek Tragedy? That’s hyperbolic but I am irked at myself.

  17. The verses do tug at your heart.

  18. Linda Hatch says:

Gloria, just be patient with yourself. The new format bugged me at first, but I’m getting used to it. I still prefer the old at this point.

I have gotten flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccines. I am better today, but not over it totally. Of course, my husband is coming down with it now. Drat!

  19. Linda Hatch says:

WELL! my reply to you, Gloria, was supposed to go under your name. Forgot to hit reply under your name. I told you, I still prefer the old.

  20. For all you dog lovers: Last night, I watched a movie that has stayed with me all day: Hachi, A Dog’s Tale. It is the story of a man and a dog, and the undying loyalty of this dog to his master. What really made it so fascinating to me is that it is based on a true story of a man and dog in Japan in the 1920′s and 30′s…the dog would meet his owner at the train station, at the same time every day, until one day, the man died suddenly and unexpectedly during the day, and so he never came home on the train. This dog came to the train station waiting for his master, every day for NINE YEARS, until his death. While recounting the story to my husband today, I was sobbing. Not just tears, but SOBS. Sigh. Anyway who has loved a dog will love this movie.

    • Mauren, this movie had the same effect on me! I sobbed at the end, and am tearing up as I write this, because I am picturing the dog sitting outside the train station waiting for his owner day after day. Oh lordie!

  21. I am still thinking about this today. I don’t know if pasting a link works on blog, but this is the story of the real life dog.

    • Richard Gere was charming. Joan Allen is one of my favorite actresses. The story would make anyone cry. I was hoping the dog can move on by transferring some of his love to his mistress, rather than the deceased owner.
