Little Red Biting Hood

It has been very cold and I thought our Holly could use a little jacket.  She has less of a natural coat than the other dogs and she’s so low to the ground that I have noticed her shivering when outside on cold days. So I bought her a  little red jacket with a snazzy color that flips up.  It’s fleecy and very warm and I love the color because I want to make sure that the snow plows and UPS trucks can see her.

When I put it on, I thought she might object to it and tear at it with her teeth, as she’s never worn anything before, but instead she was EXTREMELY pleased with herself and trotted around the house absorbing all my dazzling praise like a very animated runway model.  She did the whole runway thing of looking from left to right and jiggling her hind end this way and that. Then I let her outside and she immediately glanced about to see who was around to admire her darling little red jacket. There was nobody, so she spent several moments taking in her fabulous reflection in the storm door:

Finally, a friend arrived.  She paraded the jacket before him and he tried to restrain himself:

But ultimately, Gomer determined that clothing on dogs is silly.  And he very rudely took it upon himself to strip her of her lovely new outfit:

She ran off, her lovely garment hanging from her bare shoulders, and finally she lost him, but not until after a few sharp nips to his snout. Gomer’s very careful on ice, while she flits across it like a figure skater.  We did some readjusting and now she wears the jacket again.  And her message to anyone who wants to tear at her lovely frock like a savage beast?  Go ahead. Make my day!

By the way, Gomer’s half-brother Cisco won an Award of Merit at the Westminster Dog Show yesterday.  Congratulations to Lorene and Kevin, his fabulous breeders!  If you click on the link you’ll see Gomer’s mother at the top of the page.  And Cisco is there too.

Finally, can we discuss Dracula next Thursday?

  1. Thank you for this lovely little winter’s tale, Ann! It warmed my heart!

    Best,
    Lynne

    I just love little Holly.
She can wear that jacket like nobody else!! and she is a ‘skater’ too. Well, maybe Gomer wants one too….

She can run away from trouble and everything… :)

Sweet pea… (most of the time..)

  3. Cynthia in Westchester says:

Oh my goodness! I’m off at a cabin in the boondocks, trying to have my moment of Zen before a big surgery next week, (nothing serious, just a bit of tweaking of the face, no haters, please) but…this place has cable. Last night I’m watching Westminster, and all of a sudden, I look up and say aloud, to myself, as I’m here alone,”There’s Gomer!”. I kid you not! I am so thrilled to hear of the connection.

And I think with this crazy weather, Holly needs a nice jacket or 2….or 3.

  4. Holly looks so dashing in red! And I bet she just zips around everywhere, allowing all to see her frock.

I heard that a Leo won the Award of Merit at WKC and wondered if there was any relation! I mean, how many Leos are out there, anyway? It was a great Best in Show lineup, I thought.

  5. My God, now she’s feisty “and” fashionable. I love her dashing red coat, almost as much as she does. She is just the cutest dang thing.

  6. I definitely did a double take watching Westminster. Yeah for Homer’s half-brother. And I love Holly’s new coat. Or jacket? Why do we call them blankets and sheets for horses?

  7. Go Holly!! Such a cute story. I too just loved watching the Dog Show.

Next Thursday will be perfect…..I’m really looking forward to it.

  8. Love Holly’s new red frock! Blondes look fabulous in red! Congratulations to Gomer’s brother on his Westminster AOM! I love, love, love dog shows, and Westminster is always fun. How cool that the Scottish Deerhound took the win. I’m a terrier person through-and-through, but I thought this Deerhound was elegant. For those of you who might be interested, you can see videos of all the breed competitions at westminsterkennelclub.org. I’m going to go watch the Leonberger video now that I know Gomer’s kin was entered.

  9. gomer was clearly trying to turn it into a cape for her.

  10. So glad Holly got you distracted from your ancestors! How about that family tree of Gomer? What good fortuune for him to be in your care. ..thanks for sharing Holly”s new frock et al. You make a rough winter more enjoyable.
Stuart is longing for a visit…as am I!

  11. Holly needs to ride Gomer – then she will be well off the ground! Maybe a little bareback pad for him :)

  12. Just LOVE Holly! Adorable in her red jacket. Isn’t it grand she can take care of herself around Gomer. I know he’s a gentle giant, but wow, he’s so much bigger than she.
Great to see the Leonburgers at Westminster & I was thrilled to see the Deerhound take BIS! Next Thurs. works for me on Dracula.

  13. Holly has the attitude of Heidi Klum: “don’t hate me cause I’m beautiful.” Not everyone can pull of red, but Holly does it very well. I am more of a Gomer myself in this life. 60 degrees here today, I am so happy. Not sure if anyone saw I posted late yesterday, there is a exhibit here in Chicago titled “The Horse”, kind of a man and horse thru the ages thing, looks very interesting.

  14. Holly looks adorable. I was surprised to see that Gomer was a little jealous of that ‘little red jacket.’

  15. Holly looks so adorable in her red riding hood jacket. The color compliments her. I too am surprised Gomer tried to give her trouble about it. Maybe he was just curious. Cynthia, all the best at your face tweaking, may you emerge a goddess.

Follow up test showed me to be cancer free – may it remain so for the next 5 years. I am tentatively optismistic.

Despite an excellent job by my surgeon, I’d like to have new boobs. I don’t mean modest ones. I want them substantial, formidable, awe inspiring. Cleavage as deep as the Grand Canyon. Pamela Anderson would turn green – I just don’t want the complications from all that silicone gunk therefore I remain my modest self.

  16. Someone should carve out a statue of Kayla or Gomer — or maybe both.

  17. Gloria so excited for your news! Congrats!

Holly looks such a lil diva in her gorgeous siren red number, Wonder what Gomer’s deal was?? Love that she ran off! too cute Ann too cute!
Now i cannot discuss Dracula as I have not read it but ..Cyn, face tweaking now there is a discussion i would join, would love all the latest Plastic surgery gossip…;)

  18. I just love Holly’s red jacket. My mom made a red fleece coat for my little 4 legged baby and now on really cold days she won’t go outside without it. If I forget to put it on and step outside she looks at me like I’m insane. They have such silly personalities!

  19. Ann that jacket is as snazzy as Holly herself.Perfect color for her and the woman she is :) Red always makes life a little more interesting and spunky.Rock on Holly!

  20. By the way, I clicked into the Leo site and I think it is quite possibly the most handsome dog ever. Cisco looks huge! Gomer’s mom is a beauty. Now I know where he gets is good looks from :)

  21. Soooooo happy for you Gloria!!!!!!!!

  22. that was hilarious and I needed the laugh!

  23. Colleen Connolly says:

Dressed in her cape, Holly looks like one of my favorite cartoon superheroes: Underdog.

I think his cape was blue, but the rest of his outfit was red (I think). Nonetheless, she looks fearless up against Gomer, that gentle giant.

  24. If only she didn’t remind me of Sarah Palin — you know, cute, red jacket, probably not suitable for higher office.

  25. Linda Hatch says:

That Holly is a little blonde bombshell. How old is she now? It doesn’t look like she will be as big as Daphne and Lulu. True?

  26. What adorable pictures. I havent been around much been too busy feeling sorry for myself. I rammed a toothpick through my foot.It went all the way through! I am doing much better though but OW

  27. Linda Hatch says:

OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! That must have hurt like hell. You poor thing. Glad you are feeling better. That sounds almost impossible to do.
