My Life in Six Words

What are you all doing on Monday, July 25th? If you’re in New York City, might I suggest that you come to the 92nd Street Y/Tribeca at 7:00 PM? Why the Y? Because I will be “performing,” on a stage, in the latest installment of SMITH Magazine’s wildly successful series of  Six-Word Memoir events.

I placed the word “performing” in quotes because its not really a reading, but more of a performance. We each share our six-word memoir and give a short back story which will hopefully have the audience rolling in the aisles with laughter or else blinking away bittersweet tears of shared reminiscences and turning to their neighbors to mouth the words “I’ve got goose-bumps.” And the neighbor whispering back “I can’t understand mouthed words, but God she’s talented, why have I never heard of this Ann Leary before?”  Then…..

Oh, why go on. I’m a nervous wreck. This is the second time in the past few months that I have been onstage with performers who actually have skills as performers. At the last one, I danced, unprompted, to the shame and utter dismay of my husband and daughter who dropped in unannounced to see the show.

I promise not to dance this time. Really.

Anyway, if you come to the event, you may also participate by sharing your own 6-word memoir. If you can’t come, feel free to reduce your life to six words and share it here.  Or here.

Comments

  1. Sounds like an interesting performance, wish I lived closer. I’m sure you’ll do fine, wishing you all the best.

  2. here’s one:

Jersey girl in Paris. Sublime restoration.

  3. Ann, I would love to hear your 6 words, hope “wicked” and “good” are two of them.

  4. Ann, my brother and nephew arrive Monday afternoon from Montreal, and I think we just might head on down to see you. As happy as I am to be seeing my brother, I wish he’d limit himself to 6 words or less.

    • Really Aislinn? So cool. Now I’m even more nervous.

      • Yep. My brother just confirmed that they’ll be in NYC by 3 p.m.

Don’t be nervous. We will laugh incessantly. I promise. unless it’s not funny. Then we’ll cry. Whatever you want, we’ll do.

  5. Catherine says:

Snow, snow, ice, snow; sweat, sweat

  10. Paula from Boston says:

Mine would be “premature launch, long trajectory, soft landing”.

  12. My summer camp life:

homesick every day; didn’t want to leave!

I cried myself to sleep every night, but when my parents came at the end of the week I cried leaving because I was having so much fun ! It was a Girl Scout camp 40 mins from home. In fact, it was up the street, (in the mountains) from Seton Hall, where I commuted to college!! I was a true 9 yr old homebody.
