Night in Nantucket

“With the landless gull, that at sunset folds her wings and is rocked to sleep between billows; so at nightfall, the Nantucketer, out of sight of land, furls his sails, and lays him to rest, while under his very pillow rush herds of walruses and whales.”

Moby Dick, Herman Melville

  2. Lovely and calming.

  3. So lovely. Candy is right; calming and relaxing.

  4. calming and lovely except for those herds of whale & walruses

  5. Lovely!

  6. Oooohhhhh. Ahhhhhhhh.
That would be enough to make me re-read Moby Dick, if only there wasn’t such a literary backlog.
I definitely wasn’t old enough the first time.

  7. My friends who live in the hearts of cities – NYC, especially – praise the views of evening skylines, and I understand the seduction of sunsets wearing the winking windows of high-rises – first as skirts, then tiaras. But I will always love best evenings slow-dancing their rainbow hues across wide canvasses of water. The way those low, lazy suns pillow their halo’d heads in the beds of lakes, rivers & oceans – unfolding crazy quilts of color and light, like kaleidoscope “red” carpets to usher in the party of moon and stars and firefly-lit night.

Sorry, I waxed poetic. Wait. Do I have to apologize for that here?

Beautiful! I don’t want the summer to end.

  9. Catherine says:

Beautiful quote to go along with beautiful pictures. Happy Weekend everyone!

  10. Oh, it makes me want to dip my feet into that ocean water!!

  11. Nothing is more beautiful than sun setting over ocean. These photos speak to me.

  12. I dropped my computer on the floor
I dropped it hard, it works no more.
On a table top it rests
Denis tore it from my breast
Where I clutched it all the morn
I rocked and prayed, o how I mourn
It was just a laptop, is what I’m told
How can my family be so cold
For it was a grand computer, able and true,
On it I wrote this blog for you.
And part of a book and so much more,
Before I fumbled & it hit the floor.
Now I tap on my iPad, I must carry on.
I killed my own laptop, now it is gone.

Oh no!! I understand those feelings; mine has become like an appendage to me. And, such a shame that it can’t be rescued, even with all of your EMT training. Looks like IT training and repair classes are next.
Dear Ann, you have my sincerest sympathy.

    • RIP – Laptop of Ann
Without you, we would not have been blessed with the wit and wisdom of your guardian, Ann. Oh, the thoughts you know – unprinted words we never saw. No fret – for I’m sure your legacy will live on through those that follow your path. Thank you for all you gave to so many of us…a job well done.
So sorry for your loss :(

    • How ironic that this happened shortly after the blog entry entitled “We Just Can’t Have Nice Things” appeared.

      My condolences.

      • Oh, unspeakable loss!! The pain of losing a trusted friend and creative collaborator. I hope there’s some way to retrieve files from it post mortem….techs can sometimes do such things.
Good you have the iPad too, and soon you’ll have a shiny new laptop to train and love.

Alan, you would have to point out the peril of having nice things!

    • Fantastic poem! pity they do not have an apple store on Nantucket!

Here is my comment on dropping your laptop, Ann. Well, SHIT!

  14. Hi Ann: all okay with you? No posting for a few days so hoping it’s because too many fun/interesting things are happening but I am just a titch concerned. Andrea
