New Beautiful Things (and Old Things Go)

AUTUMN MOVEMENT, by Carl Sandburg

I cried over beautiful things knowing no beautiful thing lasts.

The field of cornflower yellow is a scarf at the neck of the copper sunburned woman,
the mother of the year, the taker of seeds.

The northwest wind comes and the yellow is torn full of holes, new beautiful things
come in the first spit of snow on the northwest wind, and the old things go,
not one lasts.

Shades of “Mending Wall” in Devin’s photo. Robert Frost would have been proud.

  6. When we are young, fall feels like a beginning. In middle age, fall is that rich opening of the third act.

  8. LOVE Devin’s photos!! They speak the 1,000 words for autumn.

This time of year epitomizes yin/ yang for me–high energy brought by cool air, lush color and warm sun, pricked suddenly by melancholy.

Patricia, your “rich opening of the third act” blows me away. Wish I thought of things like that!

Ann, thanks for sharing Mr. Sandburg’s work. You always find poetry that goes straight to the heart.

  9. Fall does not last long enough. It is my favorite time of the year. It ushers in the excitement of the holidays, families, fireplaces, heartier meals and my landscaping goes to sleep. Nature provides the landscaping now and it is a beautiful sight even in the snow.

If my horses and dogs could talk, it is their favorite time too, no bugs!

  10. Ann, I saw this today online and hope you don’t mind me sharing it. Since I was born and raised in the Detroit area this really touches my heart. Thanks to your husband for all his charitable works. Detroit really needs it these days.

  12. Love this. What a beautiful post, and what dreamily beautiful photos by Devin.

I too love fall. But lately it sometimes sends me swooning overmuch with wistfulness and melancholy.

Or it could be hormones, maybe.
