Once in a Golden Hour

Denis and I spent New Year’s eve at the Eyesore and had such a wonderful evening that we decided we’ll spend every New Year’s eve here now.  What a beautiful and serene place to enjoy the last hours of 2011.  Above is the view from the kitchen. I was preparing a roast. Denis was outside, having one of his last cigs of 2011, and, I hope, his life. You can just see his foot.

Every few minutes, the colors all around us changed with the light, so I kept snapping photos. I won’t bore you with all of them. Just a few.

I took this during the beginning of the golden hour:

And this I took near the end:

I wish you all a new year full of love and light and great joy!

THE FLOWER
by Alfred Lord Tennyson

ONCE in a golden hour
I cast to earth a seed.
Up there came a flower,
The people said, a weed.

To and fro they went
Thro’ my garden-bower,
And muttering discontent
Cur’d me and my flower.

Then it grew so tall
It wore a crown of light,
But thieves from o’er the wall
Stole the seed by night.

Sow’d it far and wide
By every town and tower,
Till all the people cried,
“Splendid is the flower.”

Read my little fable:
He that runs may read.
Most can raise the flowers now,
For all have got the seed.

And some are pretty enough,
And some are poor indeed;
And now again the people
Call it but a weed.

  29. Christina says:

How nice is that.. pretty area.. why do they call it the eyesore. I see Denis and his foot smoking his hopefully last cigarette.. I agree it’s time to quit. Unfortunately my uncle got throat cancer last year and he had radiation and the cancer is now gone..but he had smoked for years. He’s only about 56 years old .. He’s doing really good now and he’s relearning to speak again with therapy so we’re very lucky they caught it on time. I hope Denis does quit because he’s a great guy and I would hate for that to happen to anyone else.. Best of wishes to you all for a wonderful New Year.. I wish Rescue Me was still on and hopefully you’ll be coming out with a new book… I really miss that show and would love to read another book of yours..

  30. So much gorgeous in one place. Happy New Year to everybody!

  31. Happy new year Ann!!!!! BEAUTIFUL pics just STUNNING!

  32. Oh and good Luck to Denis, Mark was a chain smoker from age 14, he quit cold turkey one snowy New Years Eve night 5 years ago and has not had one since.

    • Atta boy, Mark. Fantastic accomplishment.

    • Christine says:

WOW Bev! I never smoked, but my dad did. When he decided to quit he decided to go cold turkey. The first three months he snuck a smoke here and there and then finally stopped.

  33. How BEAUTIFUL!! I can’t imagine a more perfect place to be on New Years Eve every year– a serene and calm place with the love of your life. Happy New Year to your family and of course the dogs too :)

  34. That is how all New Year’s Eve should be spent…
This is the first time I’ve commented, usually I just read.. I enjoy your thoughts..

  39. Ann, the pictures are beautiful! Interesting name, Eyesore; is that the name of your lake house or an actual place? Have to ask, such an interesting name! : ) Either way, it looks like the perfect place to spend NYE!

  43. Wow what a fantastic place, looks heavenly. I have just discovered your blog through Denis’ twitter page. I was such a fan of Rescue Me although we didn’t get the whole series here in Scotland so I am currently watching the rest of the episodes on Sidereel. I was so sad it ended though.
Looking forward to your blog in 2012.
