We’re in California, driving up the Pacific Coast Highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Just beautiful.
Dev, the photographer took the nicest photos:
We ate a dinner of delicious fishes we had never heard of in Carmel-by-the-Sea last night and then I dreamt I was in the Lewis and Clark expedition, in canoes, in tents, but I was in college and was hiding the fact that I had cocaine with me. I know. I know.
I love California. Now here’s a nice poem.
I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU
by Tony Hoagland
There are people who do not see a broken playground swing
as a symbol of ruined childhood
and there are people who don’t interpret the behavior
of a fly in a motel room as a mocking representation of their thought process.
There are people who don’t walk past an empty swimming pool
and think about past pleasures unrecoverable
and then stand there blocking the sidewalk for other pedestrians.
I have read about a town somewhere in California where human beings
do not send their sinuous feeder roots
deep into the potting soil of others’ emotional lives
as if they were greedy six-year-olds
sucking the last half-inch of milkshake up through a noisy straw;
and other persons in the Midwest who can kiss without
debating the imperialist baggage of heterosexuality.
Do you see that creamy, lemon-yellow moon?
There are some people, unlike me and you,
who do not yearn after fame or love or quantities of money as
unattainable as that moon;
thus, they do not later
have to waste more time
defaming the object of their former ardor.
Or consequently run and crucify themselves
in some solitary midnight Starbucks Golgotha.
I have news for you—
there are people who get up in the morning and cross a room
and open a window to let the sweet breeze in
and let it touch them all over their faces and bodies.

I’m in the Bay Area and it’s been gorgeous for the past couple of weeks, but this week it’s rain, rain and more rain. Maybe you’ll find a rainbow!
For some reason Ventura Highway is playing in my head. Devin is a talented photographer,, great eye!
Simply beautiful. MP better watch out, Dev’s here.
I just opened my office window and let the sweet breeze touch me all over my face and body.
Thanks.
Beautiful poem and pics. Those fog banks are amazing aren’t they? Am totally feeling the bluff photos, Devin, in fact I’m visiting the baby elephant seals and walking beaches today myself. Aahhh.
The Carmel area is Awesome, and Im sad to not be going there on this trip.
Enjoy, enjoy, joy the rest of your trip!
Carol, are you in Cambria? So jealous of you and Ann right now!
You guessed it, Sandra. Just got back from dinner at Wild Ginger. Love the food and Deb, the owner/chef. Maybe you know the place.
Sad to see new fencing and trail development at the main elephant seal viewing area, an unfortunate necessity to protect seals from increased numbers of misguided fans.
Had a great walk on bluffs and beach a bit farther south.
And I’m jealous if Ann and Devin went to Point Lobos!
Mid-Coast isn’t too hard to take.
My friends and I eat at Wild Ginger every time we’re in Cambria! It’s one of our favorite restaurants, and we love Deb. I am always happy when she has rellenos on the specials board. Plain or stuffed with lobster, they are fabulous! Love the elephant seals, too. They are magnificent creatures, aren’t they? So happy that the Learys are enjoying the central coast.
That’s a fun drive! Enjoy it…even in the rain today.
Lovely! And very jealous. I love, love, love Carmel-by-the-Sea. I was there in September and I must go back. I truly think I would live there if I didn’t live here and like it so much here (NY’s Hudson Valley, northern Columbia County, between Albany and the Berkshires – its own special version of heaven on earth). I’m adamant if I ever won the Lottery, I’d buy a house in Carmel with an ocean view (natch), too, for winters, maybe. Utterly sublime.
New England loves you.
Glad you are having a great time. Beautiful pictures, Devin
Lovely poem. Thank for sharing. Enjoy our beautiful coast.
Hope you get to stay at the Post Ranch.
P.S. Your town EMT unit got a nice editorial shout out from the County Times last week.
I love the poem. It says it all, doesn’t it. I also love the PCH. It’s breathtaking. Enjoy yourselves. Nice pics by Devin.
I love that you featured a poem by my buddy Tony!
Enjoy your delicious travels & away-time in exquisite company ~
Glad to hear you’re driving up the Pacific Coast Highway – it’s a beautiful drive. If you don’t stay at Post Ranch Inn, Ventana is very nice.
I moved to the Bay Area (San Francisco) 20 years ago from New York. I now live in Sausalito. While I love to visit the East Coast (New York and New England particularly), I can’t imagine living anywhere else but California. The quality of life is wonderful, particularly if you like nature and the outdoors.
When in San Francisco, make sure you visit Sausalito and the other towns in Marin County, which is North of SF over the Golden Gate Bridge. If you would like a tour guide, I would be happy to help.
Enjoy your time in our beautiful state.
Linda S.
Linda, we were in Sausalito yesterday, in the pouring rain. It is beautiful here, even with the rain and fog.
You picked the right week to come to Cali… This coming weekend we’re expecting rain.. Carmel is beautiful..The above commenter is right about our state… My cousins lived on Belvedere Island which is across the Bay… SF is a true city.
Buuuzzzz..as I was reading..the first fly of the season buzzing and smacking my lampshade…in Connecticut… Love the poem
Great photographs! I love the drive from SF to LA. I think the view of the Pacific coast is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Did you see the lone cypress tree? Enjoy your trip!
bee-u-tiful pics. looked to be a fun trip.
