We Are Here

Hi all. I’m back. I took a little unannounced leave of absence from the blog.  I know I have threatened this before, but I am now VOWING to blog each and every day until January 15th. Why January 15th?  Because that’s the day that my new novel, The Good House, arrives in bookstores!

So today is the first day of the rest of my blog.

We’re on vacation.  Where?  See if you can guess. It’s a place where we’ve never been before. A place where, no matter where you turn, there’s a view:

Denis and I are pretending he’s Michael and I’m Apollonia. Except that I don’t get blown up in his car. Now do you know where we are?

Heaven, that’s where.

I’m so glad you’re back, I’ve been checking everyday for a new post! My guess is Greece.
I really enjoyed Drinking Diaries, there were some very moving stories. It’s kind of like reading the Big Book. And it was so wonderful seeing you, I can’t believe you recognized me!
I hope you’ll share more of your trip.

  4. Jennifer Almquist says:

Palermo – at first I thought Ischia – but it must be Palermo.
My husband Tom Fahsbender’s family is from Sicily (the Forestiere, Impala, de Gaetano side!)

Have a wonderful time! It will be 45 degrees tonight in New Preston

  5. Stunning views is right! Clicked on book link – can’t wait! Can you scramble while enjoying scenery? ; )

  6. Definitely one of the Greek isles! but which one? The first picture looks a lot like Santorini! Enjoy!

  7. For a few days I thought perhaps Ghost Girl was holding you hostage somewhere. Glad to see/hear you are A OK and enjoying the beautiful Italian scenery,, that is my guess anyway. Pre-ordered your book today! Ciao

  8. I was once in Split, in what was then Yugoslavia, and it looks just that, but Michael and Apollonia were in The Godfather, no? So I guess Sicily.

  9. Beautiful pictures! I’m guessing you had a fantastic vacation. :) Back from Italy?

Michael…Apollonia….remember that terrible scene with the horse head? Sniff…sniff…sniff….

  10. Italy! Ann – looking forward to new Halloween pics of all your pups, especially GOMER

  11. Italy! Ann – looking forward to new Halloween pics of all your pups, especially GOMER

  12. Well, than it should be Sicily.
Sandy C. it is similar to the coast near Split. 20 years ago it was part of Yugoslavia, but now it is part of Croatia. I am Croatian and the scenery in these pictures is really similar to our coast so I like to believe that this post is from here :) but Italy is the old tourist diva!
    Enjoy your holidays!

    • In the 1940s, my parents had their honeymoon in Split. My father was in the Air Force and my parents lived in many places and traveled a lot, but they both had the fondest memories of Split and Croatia. My mother used to say the people there were exceptionally good looking and very kind. My father stayed there before WWII and he only had good things to say about the place and the people. It was the one place they wished they could have visited many more times.

      • This is so great! I am way too young to know much about that time period but I heard a lot of stories from my grandparents. My grandad was fighting in the WWII so I heard a lot of stories from that time and time before the war. Those are great stories, stories you see in movies or read in books. Things changed after that, of course, but here people in general are still good looking and very kind. There are some exceptions to the rule, but I’m not gonna mention them here. The tourism in Croatia is the main income for our economy at this moment and it is getting better and bigger with years so hearing people having good memories of it is like music to my ears (no matter what the time period is), since I’m working in the tourism myself.
I like those old stories that our parents and grandparents share with us. They sound so romantic because of the big time gap that brought so many changes. Thank you for sharing!

  13. I agree with those who have said Sicily. It’s good to have you back, Ann. I have missed you, and everyone who comments here. I am really looking forward to your new book!

  14. Ann Marie Coleman says:

Have a great time. Love you

  15. Marjorie Norman says:

    I

  16. I’ve done a little sleuthing of views from hotel windows and my guess is Taormina. Insomnia is a bitch.

  17. You are back to the blog. Yahoo!

  18. Gorgeous! Hope you have an amazing vacation wherever you are.
Glad you’ll be blogging again–and hope you can keep going on the next project while marketing The Good House.
Looks like you’ve figured out how to balance work and relaxation in the meantime, which is no small feat!!
    Thanks for sharing.

  19. Oh, wherever it is, it’s stunning, and what a wonderful place to be! Enjoy. So glad that you’re blogging again — and also happy for you for all the good things that have been keeping you busy. Happy autumn!

  20. I am guessing Sausilito??

  21. Michael and Appolonia were ill-fated lovers. Even though Apollonia’s character makes such a brief appearance, I never forgot her. She made an impression. You and Denis are anything but ill fated loves. Your vacation place and the hotel are so beautiful. Is it really Sicily? I forgot where the Corleones are from. I think their orginal family name was Andolini. In Part II when the young Vito was first introduced, I think the caption read “Vito Andolini, 1901.”

The space shuttle Endeavor made a stunning appearance over my place and my workplace. I heard the loud rumbling, I thought a plane was about to crash. I ran outside and saw the Endeavor being carried by a large plane. We all dropped everything and went outside to watch. A perfect view. A friend who is staying over saw it too. It’s not every day a space shuttle flies right over one’s head.

Later in the day Lily Belle ran into traffic and nearly met her Maker. I was hollering her name, waving my arms and beseeching the drivers to avoid turning her into a canine pancake.

A large crow fell on the hood of my moving car, screeching and flapping its wings. After her near death experience LB panicked even more, screeching and hurling herself into the back seat to hide. This was enough for one day.

Reading “Angela’s Ashes” for the fourth time in 9 years. It gets better everytime.
