Summer Daze

Well, it’s been an incredibly busy summer. I’m still doing occasional book talks and author events for The Good House, in fact I’m doing an event at the Barnes & Noble on 86th & Lexington, tonight in Manhattan. I’ll be interviewing actors and actresses about narrating audiobooks, and one of the actresses will be Mary Beth Hurt, who narrated The Good House and helped it become chosen as one of’s best audiobooks of 2013!  Come! It’s at 7:00, free and air-conditioned:

I’m also working hard on a new novel which has a deadline. The deadline is in February of 2014. For some reason, I had it in my mind that that would be a year from February, but then it was brought to my attention that we are currently enjoying the year 2013, so the book is due in 7 months. But it’s finally taking some shape for me and I’m a little excited about it.

Last month, I was invited to do an author event at the Nantucket Book Festival. My friend Jane came along and we had a great time. I got to meet and chat with Lois Lowry, the very cool author of The Giver, Dennis Lehane, Alice Hoffman and many others. As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m a little obsessed with VINE now, so I forgot to take any photos. I just Vined everything.

We stayed at the fabulous White Elephant Hotel. There was a wedding on one of the nights and we got to watch the  bride arrive at the reception, and later got to hear the worst wedding music ever. Still, I’ll always sing along if I know the words.

This past Thursday, two of our local fire and ambulance companies did a water rescue drill at a nearby lake. What a fun way to spend a hot night, splashing around in a beautiful lake, figuring out how to get a person out of the water on a spine board. People, always have a flotation device with you when you’re doing anything on the water. I’ve always been careless about this because I can swim, but had never really thought about what might happen if I become incapacitated on a Kayak or something. The person trying to rescue me would be in great danger if I didn’t float. Hadn’t thought about that. Anyway, it was a beautiful night:

Friday night I attended a book party for Kate Christensen’s great new memoir, Blue Plate Special. I picked up her book, plus two others at the party and, well, I had a little book hangover the next day:

Well, that about sums it up for me. What have you all been up to?

  1. Love the snoring video,, how nice of someone! Just returned from vacation where I have decided that I could live on the beach forever,, well until winter comes and there is 12 feet of snow at my doorstep.

  2. grrr, so you ever get to Canada? I hope you come here when you go on tour for your next book, I will be watchiing for it :-)

  3. So glad to hear from you.

  4. I just recommended The Good House to yet another person in search of a good book. I think I have to read again! I was wondering – any talk of movie plans? Also, every time I look at the cover, I see a little witch on a broom in the cardinal? Is it just me? Take care!

    • Ann Leary says:

Hi Byrd, thank you. A witch on a broom in the cardinal? Will have to look at that?
Yes there is talk of a movie, but I’m not able to say more at present. Very exciting though!
