To finish off this week of celebration, I have chosen to broadcast Jimi Hendrix, playing The Star Spangled Banner on his guitar. I have watched this youtube video several times, as I am quite fascinated by him. I hear a movie "bio-bic" is in the works about his short life. Anyway, about the video. A few moments in, you'll see Jimi playing the guitar with what appears to be his..his..tongue. Also, I would KILL for that outfit. I love the fringe poncho, and the flared pants. Are they velvet? Not so wild about the Earth Shoes. I don't see that look every coming back. Well, here it is. I love the "rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air" sound effects. Then the little rendition of "taps". So cool. Enjoy. But don't watch it too many times. You'll feel a little stoned.

Another master of this piece is Neil Schon of Journey. If you ever see them in concert, Neil playing the SSB is an experience like no other. Will make chills run up your spine.
God Bless America.......

Don't you wish we could hear Jimi's musical tribute to our new President? I saw him (Jimi, not Barack) at a now defunct club on Boylston St. in Boston with my very cool high school boyfriend in 1967. Life-altering.

I saw Jimi with Janis Joplin in Houston, in 1969. Wished I had a camera with me back then. Interesting fact about Jimi - who would believe he was in the US Army with the 101st Airborne in the early 60s?
Ironic that he and Janis dies 2 weeks apart in 1970.
The talent they both had - wasted on drugs and alcohol.....

Have just been informed that Mr. Hendrix was using his teeth, not his tongue. Thank you Phil

I believe this is from Woodstock. As a fifty-year old young at heart woman, I have been listening to all of the music I loved late sixties to 1980.
I treated myself to the Woodstock album now on CD. Listen to Crosby, Stills and Nash sing Chicago live. I listened to that constantly the week before the election.
I love your blog and your books, Ann.
