A New Day

I don’t think I’ve ever asked God to bless anyone before (well, maybe my babies, silently, when I tucked them in at night), but God bless Barack Obama!

On Journeys Through the States
by: Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

On journeys through the States we start,
(Ay through the world, urged by these songs,
Sailing henceforth to every land, to every sea,)
We willing learners of all, teachers of all, and lovers of all.
We have watch’d the seasons dispensing themselves and passing on,
And have said, Why should not a man or woman do as much as the
seasons, and effuse as much?
We dwell a while in every city and town,
We pass through Kanada, the North-east, the vast valley of the
Mississippi, and the Southern States,
We confer on equal terms with each of the States,
We make trial of ourselves and invite men and women to hear,
We say to ourselves, Remember, fear not, be candid, promulge the
body and the soul,
Dwell a while and pass on, be copious, temperate, chaste, magnetic,
And what you effuse may then return as the seasons return,
And may be just as much as the seasons.

I don’t ask God to bless anyone either, but watching the Inauguration Tuesday, I was thinking the same thing – BLESS THIS MAN and BLESS THIS FAMILY!
Proud, again, to be an American!

I love that Walt Whitman poem Ann! How appropriate!
I also feel the same way as everyone else here. I can say for the first time in my 41 years of life, I am PROUD to be an American and SO hopeful for the future of our country. As everyone said, it will be a long road, but in the end I do believe in my heart our President Obama, (Oh I have waited so long to type that out!) does want the best for us and our country. I just love the “human-ness” (is that a word?) of him and him with his family. :) It’s nice to see a president and first family with warmth and love.
And yes, my God Bless him and his family and America ALWAYS! :)

Well, I’m not American and I shouldn’t participate as I’m not directly involved with the new American President election. I feel an outsider the most of the times here, but I just wanted to say that today I watched Obama on TV and listened his wonderful speech. His words were touching that I even felt excited :-) I hope that all the international situation will improve, hope he will do a good work. He is the right man for the CHANGE! I wish all the best to you Americans and the rest of the world populations.

God bless Barack Obama and God bless America. It’s a great day to be a citizen of the United States of America, at long long last!

  6. Kim Teri says:

What a wonderful day this is. The energy of people watching the inauguration in all places was unbelievably amazing!

  7. lisa says:

I share your sentiment, Ann. It’s an incredible day to be an American for so many reasons. What an uphill battle our president faces ~ I am thankful he’s the one at the helm now. I’m proud that our country elected him …. and I can’t imagine feeling more hopeful on an Inauguration day than I do today!

  8. Barbara says:

Ann and Marcia, such beautiful sentiments. It has been a truly moving and wonderful day. A day on which I am so very proud to be an American. May God Bless our new President, our country and all of its citizens…

    Beautiful post Ann
and Marcia said it perfectly in one comment.

    Ann:
I echo your words and those of Marcia. Many times during the moments leading up to and during the inauguration, I wept openly. There is such hopefulness and optimism in the air right now. What a marvelous speech President Obama delivered!
A few minutes ago CNN broadcast news about the White House website, which switched over to President Obama’s design at the stroke of noon. I just signed up for email updates from the President and his administration. The fact that this man seems to be interested in what his fellow citizens have to say is impressive.
    Onward to our future!!

    Aaah…Whitman!
I just got back from watching the inauguration at a very, very crowded restaurant near my office. One of many very, very crowded restaurants & bars here in town. I haven’t really experienced anything like it (aside from 9-11, which invoked such different emotion)…so many people, eyes affixed on the television screen, cheering, crying, applauding….it was surreal. My kids (14, 9 & 9) were all going to be watching the inauguration at school today and it was hard to express to them what an important moment in history they were about to witness. Regardless of politics, I can’t imagine anyone not being moved by the sight of so many people crowded onto the Mall…by the words of inspiration…by “America”. I know there’s a long road ahead, but today I am hopeful. Reflective, melancholy, proud, anxious, wistful…yet still hopeful. God Bless us all….
