Fetlock Shag and Long

|

I left my dear Mark behind, today, and rode Snoopy, because he is fat and needs the exercise.

Gabriel and Mark seemed surprised to see us go.

Mark looked especially crushed, because he thinks he is my one and only. He is actually the one and only horse who nickers to me when I arrive in the barn or in the field. He was very concerned today to see me leave without him. I dedicate this verse by William Shakespeare, to my beloved Mark.

Venus and Adonis [But, lo! from forth a copse]
by William Shakespeare
Look, when a painter would surpass the life,
In limning out a well-proportion’d steed,
His art with nature’s workmanship at strife,
As if the dead the living should exceed;
So did this horse excel a common one,
In shape, in courage, colour, pace and bone
Round-hoof’d, short-jointed, fetlocks shag and long,
Broad breast, full eye, small head, and nostril wide,
High crest, short ears, straight legs and passing strong,
Thin mane, thick tail, broad buttock, tender hide:
Look, what a horse should have he did not lack,
Save a proud rider on so proud a back.
Sometimes he scuds far off, and there he stares;
Anon he starts at stirring of a feather;
To bid the wind a race he now prepares,
And whe’r he run or fly they know not whether;
For through his mane and tail the high wind sings,
Fanning the hairs, who wave like feather’d wings.
He looks upon his love, and neighs unto her;
She answers him as if she knew his mind;
Being proud, as females are, to see him woo her,
She puts on outward strangeness, seems unkind,
Spurns at his love and scorns the heat he feels,
Beating his kind embracements with her heels.
Then, like a melancholy malcontent,
He vails his tail that, like a falling plume
Cool shadow to his melting buttock lent:
He stamps, and bites the poor flies in his fume.
His love, perceiving how he is enrag’d,
Grew kinder, and his fury was assuag’d.

    Bev…very funny! Thanks for the laugh!
    Thanyou Ann for the wonderful photos of the horses…such beautiful creatures they are. I loved the poem. It wonderfully describes the regal elegance of this breed! I thought that was so sweet of you to dedicate this poem to Mark. Yes, as painful as it might be, they must make due with sharing you amongst them :-)

    lol kim I put it on closed caption

  3. Christine says:

    I love the picture of the two of them! Gabriel and Mark look like two lost puppies in that photo.

    Thank you Tammy and Elizabeth. Tammy – I knew the Shiela thing did not work out with the baby. Just got confused because there has been no mention and obviously I missed what Elizabeth caught in a previous episode. Everyone speaks like they are on speed on the show so you really have to listen. Thank you!!!!

    Kim:
    Wyatt has been mentioned by Tommy and Janet, but only in passing. In either the first or second episode of this season, Tommy dropped by Janet’s house unexpectedly and had a bag of toys which he said were for Wyatt. He hasn’t been a major plot point this season yet, but I imagine he will be before it ends.

  6. Tracy Edwards says:

    Poor Mark & Gabriel, they have the look dogs get that says ‘Mommmmm please take me with you…..’ They’re all beautiful.
    I’m sorry, tired the poem, but I’m convinced more than ever that I was born w/out the poetry gene!
    Bev, you made me spit out my soda! lololol Too funny.
    Courtney, I can’t wait to hear about your hunt! You should try to study up before. Try googling haunted Hollywood, see if that gets you anywhere. Anything you can do in advance will give you an edge. Can you tell I’m ultra competitive???? lololol It will only get you so far though, because the questions are really, really tough, & some are very obscure, trust me. So anything you can learn beforehand is a plus. Also, teams can be up to 6 people, & believe me, the more brains you have working, the better! Oh, & the staff members wander around to be sure you’re not cheating somehow. You will have a blast!!!!!!
    Plus, if you win, you win a free hunt!!!!! I have to redeem mine by 7/20, but that just means I need to buy a ticket for a future hunt by then.
    When you go, make sure you post here. If it’s too long, I’ll give you my email.

    On side note I thought Sheila had him
    and aww Mark looks so crushed.

  8. lisa says:

    I second Sandy’s question – where is Sailor?

  9. Kim says:

    Can you just see the headlines “The Magnificent Mark Leary Takes CT By Storm – Who Knew?”

  10. courtney says:

    Good Morning…or Good Afternoon to those on the East coast! :)
    Ann, so happy you took a break and went for a ride, even if Mark was left behind. The poems are so beautiful. I love them!
    And a side note, a HUGE thanks to Tracy for the information and link to the scavenger hunts. My husband and a few friends are going on the one here in Hollywood at the end of this month. “The haunted Hollywood” one. :) Should be fun! Cool company with a bunch of them all over the place here, Disneyland, the downtown library, LACMA, etc..
    looks like we’ll be doing them a lot. If any L.A. readers here want to join us on the 30th, come on down!!! :)

    I know what it is – Mark has this “haunting” look – like he should be on the cover of a romance novel or in a LOTR flick. I am sure if Mark had anything to say about it he would probably choose a goofball movie with his buddies like “3 Caballeros”.

  12. Annie says:

    Ah, Mr. Shakespeare, he did have a way with the word! I absolutely loved this one.
    : )

  13. Sandy says:

    Nice pics Ann. Reminded me of the time I was bit by a horse as a kid, still have the scar. I would work in the stable to help pay for my riding lessons. I was feeding, and didn’t know this particular horse got mad if he didn’t get fed first. A hierarchy amongst horses I guess.
    Kristin, I love the rock fences too. Ann tells about them in the comments of the April 21 blog. I drove through Conneticut last month and they are everywhere, very nice.

  14. Elizabeth Madlem says:

    Bev: Your comment about your husband, Mark, was such a hoot!!
    Lupe: The poem you posted was simply lovely. It brought a lump to my throat and made me wish I had a horse (almost….I’m too lazy to take proper care of a horse).
    Kim: I can only imagine your husband’s face as he hears you proclaim how handsome Mark is! Very funny!!
    This blog brings me such joy every day. Thanks, Ann and my fellow AL bloggers.

  15. Kim says:

    Forgive me – I don’t usually talk about Rescue Me here but I have a question because I must have missed something along the way……can someone tell me where is the baby Janet supposedly had with Tommy’s brother?

  16. Kim says:

    Oh Ann – you torture me so. I love seeing photos of all your horses but my crush on Mark continues to grow. My husband was eating breakfast this morning in another room and he heard me say “geez, that Mark is so damn handsome”. I immediately heard “Who the hell is Mark?”. He should only know about my obsession……………..
    I LOVED BOTH POEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Good one Lupe!

  17. Kristin says:

    Great pictures. Was Snoopy amazed that he was leaving? What a wonderful rock wall/fence. Was that on the property. To think that someone placed all of those rocks, actually that’s almost too big a thought. Hope you had a nice ride. Does Snoopy like to stop and eat?

  18. Kathie says:

    Beautiful poem, Ann….Love the horse pics, they are amazing creatures….
    Thank you for sharing.

  19. Sandy O says:

    Ahhhh, poor Mark.
    I know when I take one of mine away to do something with them, the other one will pitch a fit! Takes about 10 miutes to calm down!
    Silly boys :) :)
    Where is Sailor? Did I miss something?

  20. Elizabeth Madlem says:

    Sorry…another poem I’m having difficulty understanding. But the photos of poor ol’ sad Mark, pining for you on the wrong side of the stone fence, make the meaning of the poem all too clear. I sympathize with how difficult and painful it must be for you to leave your beloved Mark behind and take another horse for a much-needed ride. Sophie’s choice, eh?
    I hope the ride and Snoopy’s companionship helped your feelings of being overwhelmed. Mother Nature’s essence is overwhelming, yet reveling in her presence usually calms me and dilutes the snakes in my head. Rather ironic. But it works every time.

  21. candy in chicago says:

    oops, i guess that would be the Emmys’, i’m such a hick.

  22. candy in chicago says:

    DL just watched RM, I was laughing and crying all in the same hour, an amazing episode, just so much to take in. See you at the Golden Globes.

  23. Guadalupe M Pankratz says:

    Well, Ann, did he at least get a cookie?
    There is nothing so powerful,
    Nothing less violent.
    There is nothing so quick,
    Nothing more patient.
    Where, in this wide world,
    Can man find nobility without pride,
    Friendship without envy,
    Or beauty without vanity?
    Here, where grace is laced with muscle,
    And strength by gentleness confined.
    He serves without servility.
    He has fought without enmity.
    There is nothing so powerful,
    Nothing less violent.
    There is nothing so quick,
    Nothing more patient.

  24. Candy in Chicago says:

    Ann, love the line “He looks upon his love,and neighs unto her.” Wow, bone chilling, but i have no idea in the world what the last word means–assuag’d? Man oh man how I love those stone fences, right up there with the round barns they have in Wisconsin.

  25. Bev says:

    All I am going to say to this is.. My husband is called Mark, he is fat he needs a ride and the exercise but I am tired……;)
