An Unforgettable Gig

|

dflyer.jpg
A very nice Vassar alum (I’m using the term alum because, not having attended Vassar myself, I’m not sure if the correct word is alumnus or alumna) sent me an email today with the above flyer and ticket attached. The ticket is to a performance that Denis did at Vassar in 1992.

(Alumnae?)

Want to hear something weird? Our daughter Devin was born in 1992.

Want to hear something even weirder? Devin and I were touring the beautiful Vassar campus YESTERDAY. Denis was telling us about that very gig LAST NIGHT!

Sorry for shouting, but I’m kind of amazed at the coincidence. We called Denis at work last night, to tell him how much we loved the school and how beautiful the campus was, and he said, “I know, I performed there.” He remembered the gig quite well because they were such a great audience, those Vassar kids. Then, this very day, almost 18 years later, I received an email from a woman who was in that audience!

How cute and 90s was Denis in that photo? 8 bucks admission. Diaper money then. I would never identify an emailer without permission, but thank you very much, Ms. Vassar!

I’m currently a Vassar student, and I’m glad you thought our campus was so beautiful! Has your daughter decided where she is attending/narrowed it down to a few choices?

  2. Pamela says:

As a VC alum, we just say “alum.” Although “alumnae” is plural, when it was all women.

More trivia — Jackie Kennedy lived in Main (the building with the wide halls). As did Mary McCarthy + Elizabeth Hardwick (poet and Robert Lowell’s future wife). Main used to be the entire college. The art gallery was on the top floor. They serve tea every afternoon in the Rose Parlor. I am sure they showed you all of this.

Great school, I loved it. Amazing English department.

  3. Tremendous News! says:

    I think it’s “alumynum”

  4. What a fun coincy… or is it? :)

  5. Patty Ward says:

Your husband is cute no matter what age he is! Thank you for sharing your life with us!

  6. Christine says:

Denis really does look like a punk rocker from the 80’s. Very Cool!

I’ll bet part of the fun of the blog is seeing the ways that you touch people and how they touch you….it’s so very interesting. All about those degrees of separation.
And Phil beat me to it; after 4 years of Latin, I was pleased with myself remembering that it is alumna….as I myself am an alumna of my all girl high school..

Trace – I phrased it wrong – you need to come visit before or FOR the holidays. Your always welcome – you should know that. :)

  9. Ann Leary says:

Dearest Phil, I knew I could count on you.

  10. And Kim, you quit smoking??? I’m so proud of you!!!! Way to go! What about Joe?
I’ve been saying for a year that I have to quit, but haven’t been able to take that first step yet, and can feel myself getting sick again. My therapist said this week that since I’m a little short of my goal for the colon cancer walk I did 2 weeks ago, I should email everyone and say that if they will help me raise the last $190 that I WILL quit, and quit for good. hehehe I don’t have the nerve though because I think I already emailed or snail mailed everyone I know. lololol Will have to think of some other motivation to quit. Well besides the shortness of breath, the horrible smell, the sinus infections & bronchitis, and the cost of cigarettes. Yeah, I’m a dumbshit.
Totally off topic, but I mentioned a bit ago that I’m reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and loving it. Thank you to whoever it was who said they were reading it awhile back. Anyway, I love it so much I decided I wanted a copy for myself. I went to a used bookstore and couldn’t find it in the fiction section, and as I was leaving the woman at the counter asked what I was looking for. She said it should be in their antique and rare book section. Well I found the exact same 1947 edition that I have from the library, with the illustrations in it and and containing her second book Maggie-Now! It also has that wonderful old book smell that I love so much. I was afraid to look at the price since it was in that room, but it was $6!!!!!!!!!!! I was practically dancing with joy. I walked out so happy, gingerly holding my treasure. I really feel like I have a treasure. Ok, so yes, I am a dork, but I am so happy to have such an old copy of this book, which I love so much.
I just had to share that with a group of book lovers!

  11. Phil says:

Looks like you need some Latin review (alumna was right, plural alumnae, for Vassar grads before they admitted men), specifically “A Commencement Exercise” (written — before I knew you — just for you).

  12. Gloria says:

Alan, you crack me up. Denis does have that Marlon Brando “The Wild One” thing going on in the picture.
    Gloria

Serendipity for sure! I love when things like this happen.
In your book, “An innocent, A broad” I got chills when you spoke of the electrical things that happened with the lights.

  14. Kim, I’ve missed you so much. I keep meaning to call, but Sept flew by. We talked about me coming up in Oct, but then Oct got pretty booked up for me. I definitely want to come up and see you both!!!!
I’m so glad to see you back here. I was getting worried. I’ll try & call you Sunday, I’m leading 2 or 3 lessons at the stable tomorrow after breakfast with my girls.

  15. Sandra says:

    A perfect manifestation of synchronicity!

    Ann:
That is a wonderful thing. How people keep things and it comes right back…
Yes, he was cute. You were the lucky one and very cute and sweet yourself, if you look at that link I sent to you a long time ago from LIFE magazine, photos of which you have not posted as of yet.
And maybe, just maybe, Vassar would be THE school for Devin!.

  17. Kim says:

High octane comedy – if that isn’t dead on. How nice it was of the Vassar person to send this and yes – it could very well be a sign for Dev. Does she have a favorite in mind?
Where have I been you ask? I wish I had a clue Ann – I go through months of getting very caught up in b.s., work, the house, the dogs, slamming bills so we can be done with our mortgage, and before you know it I’m saying to my husband “Wow, that weeping willow of ours sure got big – I look at it every day and I never noticed”. I have to take a breath. Speaking of breath – thats another thing – no more smoking which does make me want to put ice picks in my eyes. (Whew – now thats what you call a major venting spew). BUT…………..its wonderful to see the familiar names and faces (which I create in my head)here and the beautiful photos. You look fabulous Ann as always.
I’ve so missed the blog – it makes me laugh a lot and I have learned so much!! Novels, poetry, pets, travel, fashion – the list goes on. I plan on dropping by at least a little more often otherwise everything has been good as I hope with all of you.
P.S. – Tracy – you need to come visit before the holidays.

  18. That is so funny, I actually got chills from the coincidences. That really is amazing. And yes, Denis is very cute and soooo 90’s there. Did they let him smoke in the chapel? lolololol

  19. Candy in Chicago says:

Dev, I believe things happen for a reason, Vassar is in the stars for you. It is a sign, as for DL I think he looks very punk, right out of the Brit scene in the 80’s.

  20. I adore when things like this happen. It’s magic in real life.

  21. Sandy O says:

Is that not so cool how things like this happen? I love it!
Funny – the show was in the Vassar Chapel???
Denis was smokin hot – as usual! :) :)
Really brings back the reality how far you both have come since then……such blessings!

  22. Lynne says:

    Ann,
This is such a cool coincidence! It kinda reminds me of the part in “An Innocent, A Broad” where you tell the story of Denis’ dad and the $5 bill! It’s really lovely that such concrete evidence of the “Leary luck” has surfaced during Devin’s journey into the next phase of her life!
    Lynne

  23. i just love serendipity…i can see you do too. thanks for sharing that Ann! oh and btw, yes, that is quite the dashing photo of your hubs :)

  24. Alan says:

“High-Octane Comedy”…ya gotta love it! Of course, your mileage may vary. Is that Denis’ bar mitzvah picture or his publicity photo from “The Blackboard Jungle”?
