A Walk in the Woods

|

hike2

It rained here on Monday. It poured rain. Part of our driveway was washed away, our kitchen ceiling leaked and the dogs and I were pretty much stuck indoors.  Holly drove all of us to thoughts of puppycide.  She was a very bad girl.  She attacked me and the other dogs, repeatedly, chewed up a shoe, refused to pee while outside in the rain and then squatted on a rug the minute I brought her in. And most annoying of all was her unrelenting glee.  The dogs and I were cranky because of the rain.  We wanted to lie in the bed-desk  and listen to the rain but somebody kept launching surprise attacks on our feet and muzzles.  When she was scolded she wagged her tail and then leapt at us again. She had a few time-outs.

Yesterday, the sun came out and I took Holly and Daphne for a hike.  I’ve been hiking with these two because Daphne is the most well-balanced individual in not just our dog pack, but also in our entire family, going back many generations.  She has a calm, assertive, intelligent manner, always, and I want Holly to learn from her.  On these hikes, Holly pays a lot of attention to what Daphne does and Daphne pays a lot of attention to me.  As a result, the hikes are really great.

Here we are starting out:

hike3

The trail was wet and muddy.

Fortunately,  I was wearing my fleecy rain boots that I bought this winter and wear every single day.  They’re just plain rain boots, “Wellies” of a sort, but they’re lined with fleece:

hike6

Greatest boots ever. When I extract myself from bed-desk, I’ll find out who makes them for you.

On the way home, puppy was tired, Daphne, exhausted:

And I worked in peace the rest of the day.

I finally got a chance to look at everyones’ pets, too cute. Must admit I loved Charley’s 4th of July outfit. Everyone drive careful tomorrow. Be safe.

  2. Christine says:

Give the puppy lots of exercise. She will get so tired that she will not be able to naughty! Adam

  3. Rose Ward says:

will have to check out FB.Yesterday’s weather was a surprise…got a snow squall about 5pm..couldn’t see your hand in front of you. It’s a whole whoppin 11 degrees here..with the wind chill it’s probably 2 below…BRRRRR.
Will look through my photos for apic of my dear “Dozer”, gahd, I miss that hound . Every one have a great day Stay warm!! Ann,Thanks for the FF on Twitter.

  4. Annie says:

ok, thanks, do hope you’ll get a chance to get a photo off to me. Hanging it on the wall is a great idea if you have the room. I hang many of my quilts.

    : )

  5. Catherine says:

Annie, I would be happy to pull it out and take some pictures for you. I hesitate leaving it out because my cats tend to chew where they find a seem break. But now that you’ve mentioned it, maybe I could hang it on the wall in my entry way. Hmmm…must ponder. I will e-mail you at your link address. I think I’ll do it this weekend!

  6. Annie says:

Oh, you must get out that other one, Catherine, it also sounds lovely. Do you have any place to lay it over something for display? How about a pic of it? Others here may not be interested, but if you click on my name, my e-mail is there. I would love to see it. I have an interest in all kinds of quilts, they are my passion.

  7. Catherine says:

Annie, what a good eye you have. YES, my great aunt made that quilt many moons ago. I have another quilt that is really fabulous and delicate that I keep safely locked away. It is made of thousands of octagonal pieces not more than an inch and a half across. Hand stitched. It’s amazing. Thanks for noticing and reminding me. I sort of take these quilts for granted.

  8. Annie says:

Catherine, love your kitties, they look so cozy. Being the quiltmaker that I am I homed in on the quilt they are lying on. It looks like an antique, did someone in the family make it? It’s lovely.

  9. Catherine says:

KC…uh I mean Genius! Fabulous idea about the pet pics! So much fun!

  10. Wendy in Wisconsin says:

What a great idea to have the pet showcase on Facebook! All the pets are so adorable and it is fun to share a little bit about ourselves, since our pets are a big part of our lives. I know my cats rule my life and coming home to all those little bundles of fur is so great!

  11. Kim says:

Ais: I SHOULD have been drinking. You won’t believe it but he has 6 Emmys. He’s a Technical Director which means he oversees the entire camera crew. Very talented but his people skills and emotional behavior have always been a sad lot.

  12. Kim says:

I know – right. Trust me – there’s truth in it. I’m sure there is settlement cash involved – thats all he’s interested in.

  13. Aislinn says:

I can’t access Facebook from the office either. One would think that our employers would include Facebook access to their employees to keep their minds off all of the work we have to do…Ha!

Kim, I read the article. Were you drinking when you said “I do?”

  14. lisa says:

arliss – i SO agree with you about puppy mills/pet stores. to add to that, i volunteer at a shelter where we get puppies that come from pet store once they get too big. it is so tough to get the adoptable. they don’t know what anything is, but a cage. they’ve never seen grass, cars, etc. and they are scared of everything – sensory overload. it can take months to get them over their fears.

kim – holy crap! i can’t believe that is your ex-husband!!

can’t wait to post pictures of my furry ones later on FB!

  15. Kim says:

I am blocked from work at looking at the Facebook photos. I will have to look again tonight when I’m home. I am sure there will be tons more photos which is fantastic. As Julie said, we are not signed on to it and in my case for some reason it won’t allow me to sign on even from my home pc. I doubt if I can comment but I can comment here. (Jules, your right – it would be just another addiction for us). Thank you Arliss for filling me in on who the owners are. Very adorable. Ann was so nice to post my photos. Had to get my 3 stooges up there.

  16. Annie says:

KC, I can’t comment on the pet pics page,(not logged in)but the horses are gorgeous too, along with the cats and dogs.

  17. Great pics on facebook. Regarding the deaf white cats, it is white cats with blue eyes that tend to be deaf. It’s like a 65-80% chance of a cat with that combination being deaf, if not in both ears, then in at least one. My vet has said that males with that combo are more likely to be deaf than females.

And Ann, yes calicos can only be female, same with tortoiseshells. Tri-color cats can only be female for some genetic reason. lolol

  18. KC says:

Ok, my pics are up! I want to post 25 pictures of the horses but I’m restraining myself. Now I’m going to look and comment on all the other pets – this is a great idea! What genius thought of it??? (insert smiley face here)

  19. Annie says:

Great idea, the pet pics page. Loving it, adorable cats and dogs there.

    : )

  20. Kim says:

Ann: Huge thank you for posting my sheps :)

Julie – ditto on Ann’s comment. Neutered? Thats a biggie.

  21. Ann Leary says:

Julie, maybe Arliss has some thoughts on your shepherd’s marking habits. Is he neutered? Are the grand dogs male? You might just have to not have any other dogs in the house while he’s still alive. Our male dogs never did this but they were all neutered quite young. And we had other dogs visiting from the time they were young as well. So cool that he’s a former police dog! IS he friendly to the dogs that visit. Did you post a photo?

  22. Julie says:

Oh you guys! So much to say on today’s post. I’ll start with Ann, our Shining Star in Fashionable Footwear. Thanks for the walking pics, but mostly I adore the boots shot. And MY parents said that little poem to me too when I was growing up. Later we invented one for our son (which I won’t post here unless requested because I am already going to yammer on way too long as it is).
About the dog peeing problem, I have an issue that is sort of similar the one Linda S mentioned. We are living with a (recently) retired police dog (long story, but it wasn’t because he, or my husband, were ready for it or wanted to). He’s nine and has taken to “marking” the kitchen floor and hallway (and family room, and and and…) after one of the grand-dogs has been here to visit. He’s house broken so I know it’s the territory thing, but it’s still driving me crazy (or rather, crazier than usual). I never seem able to catch him in the act. Ideas? Suggestions? ANYthing?!
Kim, I can’t post on FaceBook either, because I’m not signed up, and I won’t ever be. Miss Addictive Personality here, if I go over there, I know I will never get out alive. For those of us NON-FB, is it cool to send our pet
photos to you Ann? Also, can we include reptiles? Or only the dogs? (We don’t have cats, remember that I am a poorly behaved witch and can’t stand them, but TOTALLY love that you all enjoy yours. Really it’s just me, no ill will intended on the feline front.)
I’m sure I forgot something, I’ll check in tomorrow to see what it was. Thanks everyone, for putting up with me.

  23. Arliss says:

Kim, the adorable Dottie belongs to Wanda, Basil and Magic (and my dear daughter!) are mine, and the beautiful golden Tam is Amanda’s. (But there may be more now that you can’t match to an owner!) So many wonderful and beloved animals, it’s such a treat to see them all. What a great idea to get this started!

  24. Jane says:

I found a link to some muck boots with fleece lining:
    http://www.vanderbilts.com/product_detail.aspx?id=3098
I have a pair of The Original Muck Boots & they are warm/waterproof. They do not have fleece lining. I’m going over to Facebook to see the animals! I’ll put some of mine up too.
    Great photos, Ann!

  25. Kim says:

Ok – I just sent Ann photos of my scamps so perhaps she can post for me. Who are the owners of “Dottie”- So adorable, “Magic” and the little girl (there’s a book in there somewhere), “Basil” – very handsome, AISLINN- “Ernie” – I can’t believe he’s doing that. I had a red named “Romeo” who would practically jump into the bowl – the photo looks exactly like mine – FUNNY!, “Shanti” – looks very girly, girl, Riley and Ziva taking a break and WHO OWNS THE GORGEOUS GOLDEN? Thats all I can see for now. I’m sure everyone will be putting their pet posts up soon. Just wanted to know who the owners were. Great Photos!

  26. Arliss says:

Kim, thanks so much, I really appreciate that, especially from you. I guess you can tell I get pretty emotional about the subject. : )

  27. Kim says:

Arliss: Great post and I totally, completely agree. I can’t even talk about puppy mills and what goes on there. You nailed it.

  28. Mary Lynn says:

Thanks for posting the Haiti donation link, Amanda.

Hey, if you run into Nicole in Starbucks could you ummm, tell her that you loved her SAG Awards dress, and then snicker on the way out without a purchase (money saved to go to the fund). I’ll match your donation!

Yes, Aislinn, lying DOES count! Because it is so much fun to tell someone you love their haircut, outfit, etc. when you really just want to say “What were you thinking?”

I went pretty easy on the SAG Award crowd, though there were some real stinkers — I need to save up for the Grammys.

The Grammy folk tend to dress outlandishly on purpose, so the insult factor is almost nonexistant, but after this weekend we’ll need to wait more than a month for the next major awards show.

Maybe we could lure some more lurkers . . . anyone out there?

Ann, maybe you could present a “Newbie” award of a signed book to the newbie Post with the most! Most what, I don’t know . . . just another silly thought.

  29. Kim says:

Facebook doesn’t recognize me – its almost as if I’m invisible. Can’t change password. Stays frozen always. I see friends of mine on but they don’t see me. Its very frustrating. Thats why I don’t bother with it.

  30. Arliss says:

On a lighter note, I love the pet pictures idea! I’ll try to put one up.

  31. Arliss says:

Oh, what a wonderful walk in the woods, and what wonderfully tired doggies! So sweet.

Linda S., I agree with the other commenters, and having raised dogs and been a writer and editor about dogs for many years and read a jillion dog-training books and articles, a cardinal rule is not to scold for housebreaking mistakes unless you “catch him in the act,” and then only mildly if at all. (This is generally accepted, really; not controversial among trainers today, I don’t think.) The emphasis, as Kim described, is to hurry the dog outside and praise when they go where they’re supposed to. This honestly results in faster training where the dog’s learning curve isn’t clouded by huge amounts of stress because of confusion as to why you’re punishing him. This holds for dogs of any age. And absolutely, as others have said, with a previously housetrained dog, suddenly having accidents is reason for a trip to the vet. Can be a whole lot of things but kidney disease, UTI, and diabetes need to be ruled out right away as all three can be serious and cause great discomfort for the dog.

Sandra, thanks for making that point about the ultimate reason not to buy pet-store puppies being because of the lives the puppies’ mothers lead. Pups from pet stores can have health problems, as the people who bred them do not screen for genetic disease as responsible breeders do, and they can be emotionally damaged because of lack of socialization. But actually some can make it through those hurdles and be very sweet, wonderful pets. BUT the main issue is that the people supplying pet stores with puppies are by and large mass-production operations where the real victims are the mothers of those puppies. I’m talking operations based in huge, aluminum farm buildings housing 300-plus dogs who live their entire lives in individual wire cages barely big enough to turn around in … their feet never touching “real ground,” their bodies never in fresh air and sunlight. Living constantly in noise so deafening that people entering the building have to wear ear protection. (I have been in such places myself and seen this; I accompanied a commercial-kennel inspector on his rounds making surprise visits to puppy producers in Pennsylvania about 10 years ago. I can’t imagine that things have hugely improved yet.) Anyway, I wish that the message got out more that the main reason to not buy pet-store puppies is not to support those awful businesses, not to sentence more poor, dear little momma dogs to lives like that. It’s a heartbreaking, awful business that goes on behind closed doors. Don’t mean to get up on my soapbox but it’s a very upsetting scenario.

  32. Kim says:

Thank you A – I don’t have any luck with Facebook. If worse comes to worse maybe I can send one of you pros a photo of my dogs and you can post it for me on Ann’s Facebook. I truly do not “get” Facebook. I guess thats why I’m not on it.

  33. Aislinn says:

Kim, this is what I sort of remember doing. You have to click on Ann’s Facebook page (shown on this blog), and then sign in with your Facebook login. Then there’s an area where you can write a comment in a white box. Below the white box, there are three options for attachments. Click on “add photo”. Then the fun begins. Click your mouse around that space (there will be a twirling icon) until you see “upload photo”. Once you get to “upload photo” it will open a browser and you can indicate which picture from your hard drive you want to upload. It’s quite confusing, but persevere. Don’t throw your laptop out the window.

  34. Kim says:

Aislinn – how do I post one of my photo’s on Ann’s facebook?

  35. Aislinn says:

I finally figured out how to post a photo on Facebook. I almost threw my laptop across the room, but I got it. I put Ernie up there. It might be time to update my collection. Ernie can do a lot more than drink out of the toilet bowl.

  36. Lisa (from MA) says:

Ann, you Can post comments on the photos on Facebook. You have to pick which picture you want and then you can comment. Also, hope someone will be taking some videos of you on Saturday to share. Maybe you could put those on here or on your Facebook page.

  37. Kim says:

    I did click the link.

  38. Kim says:

How do I post a photo?

  39. Amanda says:

Ann, this should be the Haiti donation link-

    http://www.firstgiving.com/hatersforhaiti

Kim, If you click on the link Ann provided for her FB page the photos should show right on her home page.

  40. Candy says:

Ragdoll cats are so cute, just took a look.

  41. Ann Leary says:

I wish we could post comments on the facebook page under the photos. Gorgeous dog amanda and Catherine, me-ow!

I can’t find the link to the place where I pledged to match donations for Haiti. And I don’t know how much I owe. Can anybody help? So disorganized today.

  42. Kim says:

Ann, Well – I went to the link – not familiar with F/B – I think I’m signed up. Went to photos – fan page. What do I do now? Honestly, I don’t get it at all. Help!

  43. Ann Leary says:

Okay, I’m really excited about the pet showcase page. Here’s the link to the fan page.

    http://www.facebook.com/annleary?ref=mf

Maybe we can rename it. You all know how great I am with names.

KC, the boots are made by Aigle but I’ve been all over the internet and can’t find these exact boots. They’re great for barn chores – high enough that the shavings don’t end up inside. Warm and waterproof. Damn. I wish I could find them

  44. Catherine says:

    Kim, OMG!

  45. Kim says:

Page 6 today – New York Post. The article with the photo of Debra Norville – they are talking about my EX-husband of 13 years. No joke. I SO had to get rid of him.

    http://www.nypost.com/p/pagesix/norville_gets_court_summons_APrq51u1OHSWY7NgrEEBoL

  46. Catherine says:

    Where is Ann’s fan page?

  47. Amanda says:

OK, I’ve posted a pet pic on Ann’s fan page but nobody else has! Come on girls!

  48. Rose ward says:

Hard to discipline if u aren’t there when the incident occurs…confuses them. Ilove your boots Ann!! once my feet are cold i’m done for. Ihaven’t done laundry for 2 hours..I’m so F’n happy, Jello and Gingerale are staying with my boys…I think the crisis has passed.

  49. Kim says:

Ann: Where is your fan page?

My mom has two ragdoll cats – a male and female. They are called ragdolls because when you pick them up, that is exactly how they position their body, like a lifeless ragdoll. They are absolutely breathtaking to look at. Google them.

Yes – I believe its true that only Calicos are female.

Love the photos – it definitely looks like “lets get Holly (the Medusa dog) very very tired” kind of walk. Ann – do you ever have reservations walking in the woods alone like that? Sometimes I feel like someone is watching – its just me – my mind begins to run away like an idiot. Just wondering if it made you a little nervous.

  50. Kathie says:

Quite a funny post, Ann… I totally identify because of my Gracie, she will be 8 months old Feb 12th, now weighing in at 55 lbs and is so rambunctious….
I refer to her as my “Bull in a china shop”…Thank goodness we have here a doggie daycare that I take her to 3-4 days a week for socialization and excersize when I am working….She absolutely loves it there and is asleep before I am out of their driveway….
She can have a nasty attitude if she doesn’t get her way, but she is learning that I am the alpha dog and its my way..
She likes to lay on my bed with me when I am on my laptop but then she starts playing, chewing blankets, licking my computer, it gets annoying so then I boot her off…
But I love her to pieces and am enjoying her so much…
My son just got a chocolate lab puppy so I bring her over or go to my son’s so the pups can have a playdate….

Linda S. My other Rottie had urinary incontinence when she got older, they can get that just like people and there is medication for it, just something else you might check into
    with your vet.

  51. christine walker says:

Those dogs really are something…so cute! It rained all day in Buffalo too, now its snowing and really windy. Ugh!

  52. Ann Leary says:

KC, you guys can all post your pet photos on my fan page. I started it and then never go there for some reason. Seem to only twitter now. But we can use it as a pet showcase! I want to see what these ragdoll cats look like. Have never heard of them before.

Amanda, I think it’s the white cats with blue eyes that are deaf. Also, I believe all calicos are female. Hope these aren’t wives tales, but I think they’re true.

Linda S, kidneys are often the 1st things to go in dogs. Just as most humans die of heart disease, most dogs die of kidney failure. Our Pongo stared having accidents when he got old. Does your dog have to go out in the middle of the night. I abide by the catch them in the act only method. Dragging them back to the spot later is very confusing, at least for puppies. Plus, your dog is housebroken so it’s likely he did it out of kidney issues or early senility. Listen to me go on like an expert. Just talking from my own experience. Ask your vet to do a urine test to check kidney function. He can go on a special diet that might help.

  53. Colleen says:

Spa day in your rubber boots/wellies – mix some lotion w/ a small amount of one of those abrasive foot scrubs, apply to feet, cover with socks and let cook in your wet boots all day. Soft as a babies bottom.
And don’t ever scold the dog or horse unless you catch them in the act. They won’t get it. Only humans can have their noses rubbed in mistakes for days, months and even years after the fact. Another resaon I’m single!

  54. Kim says:

Linda: I don’t scold unless I catch it. And if I’m catching it – I usually don’t say anything – I just carry the dog outside and say “Pee pee outside”. I have a 17 year old Pom so I went through that. She’s in diapers now. I’m not all over her. You have to think about the age factor too. How about the vet? Maybe a UTI is going on. That will do it too.

  55. nicole says:

The hike: Love it! That’s so perfect: puppies, boots and all!

  56. Catherine says:

Aislinn, brilliant! (Ernie’s tushy is very cute…) I am going to load (or try load) a picture now too.

  57. Aislinn says:

Here’s the first attempt. Be sure to visit.

    plogbloggers.blogspot.com

  58. Aislinn says:

    Plog! Yeah! Done!

  59. Catherine says:

Plog. I’m still laughing! Love it.

  60. Mary L says:

Amanda, I have a pure white feral cat who is not deaf.As a matter of fact, all I have to do is open a can of tuna for my lunch and he is at my feet. Just the whoosh of air leaving the can will bring him from the other end of the house. He is quite the little man, he wakes us up every morning shortly before the alarm goes off, by slamming the bedroom door shut.. we tried putting a door stop down, but he freed it up and tossed it in the air. He is 8 years old and thinks he is a kitten. We have another female cat, she is 2 and they are best friends.

Ann – Did the doggies wear raingear that you removed prior to the picture? How else would they look so clean? and do tell about the boots..

  61. Sandra says:

Linda, if your Welshie has started peeing in the house, you may want to get him checked out at the vet. He could have a UTI, or maybe some age-related kidney problems. I wouldn’t scold him. I use Nature’s Miracle for accidents.

Also, I have met some nice dogs who have come from pet stores. The only issue I have with pet store puppies is that they ALWAYS come from commercial breeders (aka puppy mills). Buy a puppy from a pet store, and you just make room for another one. I think pet stores that sell puppies should be put out of business. Most pure bred dog rescues are full of pet store dogs, bought on impulse.

I think it would be fun to see everyone’s animals, too!

  62. KC says:

Aislinn, Great! I love it! We can call it a Plog! (Pet+Blog = Plog!)

Linda – I don’t have a dog at the moment, but have had my share of senior dogs (and I’d consider a 12 year old senior). He could have some incontinence issues, so I wouldn’t scold him. Maybe get some wee wee pads on the deck to entice him to head out there instead?

I’ve heard white vinegar works well to keep repeat accidents at bay. I’m sure others here have some great suggestions – you’ve come to the right place!

  63. Guadalupe M Pankratz says:

    Ann:
    I love those boots!!
And I am sorry that Holly can be such a pain in the arse. Maybe she ‘thinks’ that is how you engage others to play… but the piddling in the rug… when ‘everybody’ else did it outdoors, that is NOT nice at all.
And Lulu cannot climb up on the bed…. because of the hip.. and she is a big girl?. Looks like she is the size of Daphne. And Daphne is such a mommy!!, patient and everything!.

And I did not make the Chemistry placement, so I went back to ‘remedial’ Chemistry. I want to learn the stuff, they can call me what they want!! :)

    Lovely dogs, Ann!!
And Holly is just so darn cute.

  64. Catherine says:

Aislinn, just checked the tweet. Ed Asner. Now THAT’s funny!

  65. Catherine says:

KC and Aislinn, I love that idea!!

  66. Aislinn says:

Everyone, Ann’s most recent Tweet is hilarious.

  67. Aislinn says:

KC, we can start a Pet Blog. It’s pretty easy to set up a blog. Even I can do it. Everyone can email their pet’s photos, complete with their stories, and I can post it on the blog. We should talk about it on Saturday. My Ernie is a ham (well, not a pig, but a cat), and loves to have his photo taken…especially when he’s drinking out of the toilet bowl.

  68. Linda S. says:

How could something sooo cute be sooo naughty? Ann – What do you do for a “time out?”

Love the pic of Daphne and Holly together. I know I always say I love Lulu, but Daphne is a great dog in every way. I think the Labradoodle/Goldendoodle combinations are really winners. I find it interesting (and wonderful) that she is SO GOOD,knowing you got her from a pet store. It really dispels all the negative “advice” you hear about not getting animals from pet stores. Just goes to show ya.

My 12-year old Welsh Terrier Charley has started peeing in the house occasionally during the day when I’m at work. He is home alone all day but gets taken out by my dog walker every day for at least 1 hour, usually longer. He has a dog door that goes out to a small concrete deck, where he usually pees.

MY QUESTION: When I come home from work (approx. 7:00 PM) and see that he has peed, does it make sense to scold him, or has he forgotten that he’s done it? I know there are 2 schools of thought on this. Most people say that reprimanding only has meaning if you catch a dog in the act. I would love to hear thoughts on this from any of you.

Also, does anyone know of a good product to spray on the site to discourage repeat peeing in the same area? I’ve been using Nature’s Mircle, but it is not working.

    Linda S.

  69. KC says:

I must say, I love all the different pet names. So many different characters and pets that I imagine. I wish there were a communal place/ gallery where we can post pet (and perhaps, people) photos with captions so everyone knows who we’re talking about! Dogs, cats, horses, birds, whatever. Hmm. Who is up for that project?

  70. Kim says:

“A tired dog is a heppy dog”. Thats all I have to say about that.

  71. Catherine says:

KC, my cats have yet to gift me with a mouse carcass (thank god), but Ziva frequently hides my earrings under the bathroom rugs.

  72. Catherine says:

I’m loving all these cat shout-outs today! Spaghetti, Squeaky, Ragdolls, tabbies, domestics! All rescues, like mine. LOVE IT! Ziva’s latest trick is to pull a throw blanket down from the banister I have it draped over and drag it by her teeth into a corner of the livingroom for a day bed for herself. It’s hilarious.

Also, I think it is soooo touching the way Holly and Daphne interact, with Holly learning “better habits” from Daphne. Daphne might be my favorite of your brood now.

  73. KC says:

Ann, I *must* know who makes those fleecy rain boots. I’ve been surprised that my muck boots have served so well this winter but those look downright decadent on a wet, snowy, cold morning!

  74. Candy in Chicago says:

Well, I just finished Rebecca, and I must say I loved it. My favorite pick of all the book club reads. Can’t remember if Ann or someone else chose it but I truly enjoyed it.

  75. Sandra says:

Yes…how did the dogs stay clean on that walk? Mine would have been muddy from elbow down. And with Wheatens, you can also assume that their beards will be as wet and dirty as the feet, because they have to smell everything. With all the rain we have had here in southern California, I have been wiping lots of feet and beards. Fortunately, neither of them mind going out in the rain. For several years, though, Annabelle would only go out if I would take her out and hold an umbrella over her head. The umbrella would be over her head, not mine!

  76. Aislinn says:

    Marcia,

    Great Squeaky story!

  77. Marcia says:

Ha! Sounds just like my kids (the human ones). They had been HORRIBLE this week — no outdoor activities due to the rain. We were finally able to get out yesterday and ran them ragged. They were exhausted, but we had such a peaceful evening. aaaah.
Old cat story — when Squeaky was young she had a very naughty habit of sneaking up on our houseguests as they slept, pouncing on them and biting their noses. It was only guests and always their noses. It would have been cute, but often she drew blood. I will never forget my dad chasing her around our tiny apartment at 3am. I learned a few new words that morning…

  78. Annie says:

It sounds like Holly is going through her terrible twos. Hope that phase passes quickly. Good luck!

  79. Amanda says:

Linda, is your white cat deaf? I know not all white cats are but there is a higher percentage of deaf white cats than other colors. We had one, our beloved Joe, and didn’t know it until we brought him home and had him for a few weeks. It was no problem at all, on the contrary, he wasn’t disturbed by loud noises like the vacuum and reacted by vibrations. (Cats don’t come when you call them anyway!) He was one of the best cats we ever had.

  80. Louise says:

Linda – I’m also a cat lover. Have one orange tabby former stray that I just adore. Met my first ragdoll last month and fell in love with her. A friend adopted her from a shelter. What a terrific breed. Basically, I love all animals. Love to watch Animal Planet and National Geographic, but can only watch “happy” shows. I can’t bear watching shows about neglect or abuse.

  81. Louise says:

“Tired Holly” looks so innocent. Hard to imagine all the “cadology” she dished out earlier. (Cadology is my new favorite word. Read “Why We Suck” last year. Received it on audio this Christmas and have been listening to it on the drive home after work). A friend of mine contends that God makes puppies so cute so that we will not resort to “puppycide” when they are being very NAUGHTY.

  82. KC says:

Hi Linda! Cat lovers welcome, of course! Catherine is a cat lover too, and I have 3 cats. A spaghetti attack! That was hysterical! Your kitties sound beautiful. We have plain old Domestic Short/ Medium Hair cats, all rescues, and we adore them.

  83. Linda Hatch says:

Talk about rains! I live in southern California. We were lucky. Only needed one bucket. Is a cat lover/owner allowed in with the dog lovers? I love dogs too. And horses. And Ann’s blog. We have three cats – two Ragdolls, Claire and Nicholas, and one rescued black tabby, Patrick. Last night pure white 8 month old Nicholas managed a sneak attack on the supper table and landed with one foot in my husband’s plate of spaghetti.

  84. Aislinn says:

Fantastic photos. They tell the story, all very well. I love, love, love seeing those doggies when I turn on my office PC. Thank you!

  85. KC says:

Yesterday was a great day for a hike!

I think animals being nutso was the order of the day for Monday…I had to tranquilize my 5 year old Thoroughbred, he was rearing in his stall and just giving himself a good old panic attack since he couldn’t get out. I actually let them out – in a deluge and he just spent the hour antagonizing my older mare. You can’t win!

BTW, I am loving Rebecca. I’m perhaps 60 pages in (I just started it yesterday) and Max is so…interesting! I’m picturing quite the older hottie in my head.

  86. Amanda says:

How in the world did those dogs stay so CLEAN?

  87. Ann Leary says:

Bev, my parents used to frequently recite that poem to me as a child, because it so summed me up, I guess. I honestly thought they had made up the poem themselves, about me. I was shocked, as an adult, to find it in one of the kids poetry anthologies!

  88. Bev says:

I hear ya about the rain monday I had pans going everywhere! Holly was being very naaughty and I am glad you finally got to tire her out!!! What a cute cute picture though when she is being good….. How does that Longfellow poem go …
“And when she was good, she was very, very good,
But when she was bad she was horrid. (wicked)”

yes I looked that up just for you Ann…..:)

  89. Sweet, sleepy doggies! I can always tell when my son upstairs is reading your blog. Toby is nuts over your dogs.

  90. Candy in Chicago says:

Oh to have a little one in the house is work for sure, but she sure is cute. It is amazing how much the two look alike. Hope to finish Rebecca today, very cold here.

  91. Colleen Connolly says:

How adorable!! The pictures, I mean. The bad behavior, not so much.

I almost killed our puppy on Monday, too. She was spayed last week and the inactivity is driving her (and the rest of us) crazy. I feel so sorry for her because she seems so sad, not being able to run around like she normally does. Her stitches come out tomorrow, and I’m hoping she turns into Forrest Gump and runs for days, exerting all her pent up puppy energy.
