There was a little pup, who had a little tuft, right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good, she was very, very good.
But when she was bad…..
SHE WAS HORRID!
After defeating her first opponent (she’s the one hiding behind Daphne, the ref), Holly takes on heavyweight champion Luscious Lulu. This can’t be good for lightweight newcomer Hellacious Holly. She’s really outclassed in this match. Look at the conditioning on Luscious!
And Luscious Lulu has her in a headlock. It looks like the end for Hellacious.
REF! DO SOMETHING!
Wait, Holly’s taking it to the floor! Smart!
And she pulls out her trademark move – the “ear pull.”
Followed by a quick “jowl pinch.” Oooh, that’s gotta hurt.
Luscious Lu is trying to stay on her feet, but it’s not looking good, folks
AND SHE’S DOWN!
SOMEBODY STOP THE FIGHT! No tongues! NO TONGUES!
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! The winner of this morning’s fight and reigning defender of the ottoman empire, Hellacious Holly!
You want to get up on that ottoman? Go ahead…make her day.

This was your cutest post yet! Your blog is definately not “too doggie”.
Ann, great wrestling match and comments, I could hear the excitement in your voice!!!!
Wow! You really captured the full effect of the play by play. Who knew a puppy could pack so much punch!!!!
Enjoy the warm weather and the sun!
Hi all!
Safely back in the Bay Area to check on things… go to storage, get papers, write letters, mail those…go to the one bank in person…but next week it is apartment hunting.. I shall worry about the car latter on.
Morning time in Hermosa Beach (and it was early) was something. It was coming down with a passion and I did not have time to say bye to the lovely seagulls… with whom I thought I had a relationship… or something. The pier is lovely and they come to you to see if you’ve got some fish in your funnypack… yet… when nothing is handed to them, they look at you by tilting their head, in a very funny way, as if saying :’gonna give me something or just teasing’?. And when nothing comes out of the bag, but plenty of words, they look at you some more, by focusing their eyes, almost turning their head. They are patient birds. Then, when they see there is nada, they take off so quickly and elegantly and make this loop to the beach down where they can find lots of crabs and clams. So beautiful a coat of feathers, so white… with a great wing span.
But I am not going back to that place again!. From 10pm to 2am… daily… this rave music, that I love when I am exercising… with this powerful stereo system, that travels up the walls of the building, and it feels like the sound is hitting my head, over and over again. When I told the clerk, the basterd had the nerve to tell me I needed earplugs….
Of course, the kids are all outside, drinking, dancing and socializing, and they go down when the music ends. But it created havoc for me. Never again. How can they have a permit to house people AND run that music so loud???? The funny part, I thought, was that the cops showed up really early in the morning, not at night. Go figure that logic.
It was not just me who was bothered by this. My three German amazons… and the girls were that!!! also did not appreciate that terror… and there was a French girl who stayed two nights and was making eyes at me, as we were both checking out at the same time.
A ritzy area, where you can get a Brazilian bikini wax for almost ‘nothing’; eyelashes extensions; eyebrow designs; karate classes; massages and aroma therapies; a lovely bikini fo only 350.00 dollars, then again there is that pair of shorts and tshirt, the towel, the sandals and the parking permit… all in the Pallisade area. Horrible food, and sure these folks do not know how to fry eggs or prepare potatoes!!!. Toast? unsure. And coffee?? I think they brewed it the night before…..
My classes? great. Only that I do need that other larget suitcase because we are talking four binders, large textbooks, laptop of course, calculator and cell phone, recorder, book excerpts printed out and whole series of I do not know what, BUT that I cannot do without. One of the books weighs 100 lbs for sure, and my lovely Spaguetti Western professor? he gave us a list of ‘recommended movies and books’ that ‘it would be good if you would read them’… (Thank God for Netflix). Also, a list of events and movies that followed those events (the mood) from 1940 to the present. He is gorgeous. He speaks about his wife and I only wonder if said wife is the gender that I think she is. Just wondering…
So, coming downpours in Hermosa… and dry as a bone in San Jose, California!!!!. Actually, Santa Clara.
And loving to see again the photos of Lulu and Holly… saved them to my harddisk…
Enjoy… I am pooped.
I’m loving TCM’s Oscar lineup — On Sunday “Rebecca” and “8 1/2″!
I just watched “The Shootist”, and a couple of days ago I read this piece in the NYTimes by Dick Cavett about his encounter with the Duke on the set http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/22/awesome-and-then-some/
I have to disagree with Woody Allen’s assessment though — anyone who has his favorite horse “Ole Dollor” written into the script may be an actor, but he is also a cowboy indeed.
Colleen, I just read your post from earlier this afternoon. I got so caught up in the canine cuteness, that I lost focus. I’m not sure of the origins of some of those Irish expressions. I grew up listening to all sorts of odd sayings, which I thought were perfectly normal – until I ventured out into the world. My parents would send me out to the store for rashers, and growing up in Montreal, nary a Quebecer knew what I wanted. My mother was the authority on the Irish lingo, but unfortunately, she’s up in Heaven sipping a glass of sherry with Jackie Onassis right now. I’ll give my father a call this weekend to get to the bottom of the blarney, and will revert with my findings. The only phrase that still plays in my head every time I behave like a complete idiot is my mother’s “Jaysus, Aislinn, stop acting the bloody fool!”
A long weekend in Florida sounds pretty good–it’s raining in L.A. again. Love the rain, but a little weekend away in some warm weather sounds really good to me right now. I don’t mind Ann not refreshing her blog today, the wrestling play-by-play and pix are so fun!
Okay, gotta run–meeting a friend at a local wine bar. There’s a glass of Pinot Grigio with my name on it.
Welcome Samantha!
I just want to second Sandy O.’s suggestion to see Cavalia….I have never seen anything like it! I check periodically to see if it will come to the West Coast. The site gives you an idea of how beautiful and exciting the show is! If they haven’t seen it, I think the Learys would love it.
Two tickets to the Super Bowl: $1400.
Hot dogs: $20.
Cold drink: $15.
Ann Leary’s Blog: PRICELESS!
I just revisited the “wrestling match” and am still laughing. Is Luscious demandng a rematch???
Ann – What do you think that Snoopy skiing dream is about? Very interesting…..
Lynn – thanks for the barkives website. There’s one BIG problem – no listing for Welsh Terriers!!! What’s up with that, Charley and I would like to know??? I think I’ll send them an e-mail. Other than that, it’s a great site.
Ann – Hope you and D and D have a wonderful weekend in warm and sunny FL.
Linda S.
Ann and fam, have a fantastic time! My boss is down there too, but for the Superbowl – if you see a crazy Cuban guy with a Heineken, it’s probably him.
By the way, I happened upon Dani Shapiro on the Today Show this morning, talking about her new book! How serendipitous that I cleaned the barn early and turned that on at just that moment.
Welcome, Samantha! So nice to have you here, lovely to have another New Yorker! (I am a 3 day a week NYer….formerly 24/7 NYer…clearly I’m in denial about where I live?) I live in NY State still, does that count?
Hi Ann,
If you are around Miami, try and go see the Cirque du Soleil “CAVALIA”. It is supposed to be spectacular!
http://www.cavalia.net/pages/upComingShows/miami.aspx?lang=EN-CA
Have fun and enjoy the warmth!
I just saw these photos (and their fabulous captions) for the first time. So damn funny! Keep ‘em coming!
Lynn C., thanks so much for the link to that site — I’d never seen it before, what great dog photos! I just referred the photographer to a friend in dog publishing who didn’t know about her and can always use some neat pics.
Ann, Denis is right-you are hysterical!! You just may be funnier than him indeed(currently reading his book and he mentions many times how he thinks you are funnier than he). Really-really-oh so much, needed a good laugh this morning and laughing I am. Love your wit—keep up the good humor! Thanks again.
Yesterday we saw Holly open a can of whoop-a** on Lulu. Then you left for vacation. I wonder if the Hellacious one thinks that not only does she rule the Leary canines, but that she has the power to banish the Leary humans from her Ottoman Empire as well. Have a great time on your vacation.
Lynn: I like that site – I was looking at the Cane Corso’s – love them.
Toby came across this site and we thought we’d share it since this place is overflowing with dog lovers.
http://www.thebarkives.com/
Love these photos, gave me a good laugh today. Hope you’re enjoying your vaca.
I, too, can’t stand the Miami airport. Terrible signage around the airport. We now fly into Fort Lauderdale, rent a car, and go from there. It is a much better experience! Have a fun weekend!
Nice change in scenery Ann – it must of irritated your eyes to see “blues and greens” – add warmth to that mix and WOW. I avoid the Miami airport at all costs even if that means flying into Fort Lauderdale or West Palm. Too nuts.
So sorry you had a miserable time at the Miami airport, though. I’ve had bad experiences at that one too. But I do love the amazing decor consisting of arrangements of mounted fish in beautiful designs — did you happen to see those? They might only be in one part of the airport, I don’t know.
Have a nice vacation, Ann! I grew up in South Florida and miss the beach and the ocean terribly. The sound of the surf at night is a wonderful thing.
I love the Snoopy dream!
Candy, it’s amazing how warm wind is almost better than just warm. Lovely. I could hear the surf (huge waves) outside our window last night and had a dream that Snoopy, our horse, was skiing. I was running alongside him, he was on a lead rope, and he was cutting up the slopes while I tried not to get run over by him
Alan, very funny — “Bedistan”!
I vaguely rememeber warmth in the wind.
Your comments have all been so funny! I have been away from the computer. We are on a little holiday! Denis and Dev had a long weekend so we decided to come down to Florida for the weekend. It would just be the easiest thing to get on a flight and zip down here.
We thought.
We somehow forgot that about the Super Bowl. We’re actually staying pretty far from the super bowl but the airport was packed with football fans, young cheerleading squads, etc. But now we’re here, so I won’t bore you with the airport hell, the filth, the squalor. It’s warm and windy here. Nice.
“Whelper Weight” (thanks lisa). . . classic, maybe Holly should enter the octogon for the UFC – Ultimate Fighting Canines. Shades of Mike Tyson with that ear bite . . . maybe she is a “Jack Johnson Terrier”.
I now know that WCW actually stands for “World Canine Wrestling.”
Ann, does the ottoman empire extend to the adjoining land of Bedistan?
As others have rightly observed, one of the best….
Like I say to my girl quite often… how can something so cute be so bad. Just bad, bad, bad!
You still love them though!
After a busy day at work, I just had to re-read this one and look at those pictures again! I even decided to bookmark it, it was THAT good!
Hey Samantha – Nice to have you!
Ann – OMG, this is one of the best posts ever! Just hilarious! LOVED the photos and the play-by play is priceless. You are soooo funny and descriptive. The ottoman empire!!
That Holly sure is a feisty little thing – taking on Lulu like that. And how wonderful is Lulu to cut Holly some slack, which she surely did. It must be really fun to watch them go at it.
I also love Daphne just sitting there – smiling at the camera.
Holly is so adorable. I love that tuft of hair, and glad she still has a heart-shaped nose. And the look on her face – watch out world!
Thanks for making my day, Ann.
Welcome Samantha.
Linda S.
Hi and Welcome Samantha !
Welcome Samantha!
Hi Samantha! Another lurker has seen the light!
Welcome Samantha!!
hahahaha!! that was great!! CRACKING UP over the ottoman empire. This is definitely going in a mass email ;o)
Let me introduce myself to all of you regulars! My name is Sam, I live in Queens, and a fellow horseperson friend introduced me to this blog a few months ago. I’m finally all caught up (and thoroughly addicted) , and this is my first comment
OMG—you made my day today with this story!!! I went back to work today after being away for 6 weeks, and I had 3 8th graders who put on the same performance…..when it was all over the vice-principal looked at me with a stone cold straight face and said “Welcome Back” –and nothing else as he escorted Terrible Tyrelle (the other 2 were girls) from the room…..
The dogs make it all SOOOO much cuter !!!!
Thanks much Colleen, I so did not get that. Still chuckling over the ‘ottoman empire”.
I had to go back and look again. It seems I missed the pic of Holly’s head in Lulu’s mouth. Apparently unscathed, Holly reigns! Thank you! I haven’t gone Bwahahahaha, then snorted, then kind of choked in a long time!
The pro wrestling is absolutely the BEST — thanks so much.
I echo what everyone has said…..this is hilarious and will be re-watched whenever I need a laugh. Thanks for including us in your canine capers…..hope there will be more!
THAT was the funniest, cutest thing that I’ve seen in a long time. “You’ll pay for a whole seat folks, but you’ll only need the edge.”
Candy, I’m not sure if Joyce is doing something more with this exchange (chances are he is), but I think it’s simply a social and friendly one. I remember my dad used to say to me “How are all your charges, lass?” (meaning: how are you?) and I learned to respond “All on a baker’s list.” (meaning: I’m fine.) I don’t know how these greetings came to mean what they did. Maybe Aislinn (whose parents are from Ireland) or someone else has a better understanding of their origin. But that’s what I took away from this exchange.
This is what I needed. Little Holly is something, isn’t she?. Doesn’t she ‘know’ her own strength?. And Lulu’s patience… and Coco’s hidding for good measure and Daphne, well, she is not about to get involved in that ‘nonsense’.
Nice.
I cannot wait to leave this one place.. the music starts at 10pm and I am suffering from sleep deprivation. Plus, three german descent-ed amazons came into the area… and they speak their own language- which I understand- but it is meant to be isolating. Next week? I am getting a hotel room, thank you very much!. I guess I have limitations. And the ocean is sooo beautiful, for a full hour early in the morning, with the surfers freezing their balls off… sorry, but it has GOT to be. Doing their thing. Me having conversations with the seagulls…
more latter
Some of their cams are better than others. This one is a little fuzzy.
For anyone interested – you can go to the elephant site below – click on the “cam” in the upper right and see the elephants right now – real time. I have this going all day.
http://www.elephants.com/
Haaaaaaaa!
This is fantastic! Boy, that Holly, she is definitely vying to be Top Dog.
I think what made me laugh the most was the look Daphne gives you in Pic No. 5, “This is soooo DOGGY and undignified! This will never do!” (In my head, Daphne speaks with an English accent. I don’t know why.)
can’t stop laughing–thanks!
I am sitting at my desk eating my lunch laughing like a wild woman, too funny. Ann, I love the John Madden play by play on this. I can’t believe Holly took Lulu down, seeing is believing. Holly’s wrestling name should be “Mighty Mite”. Collen C. I need help on ” How are all your charges…, all on the baker’s list thanks”. I don’t get this at all. What are they talkng about?
Ann – what do we owe you for the reffing?
Ann, this is my favorite post EVER! The end.
What a great post! The play by play was excellent. I felt like I was in the room ringside. I just love that little face in picture #1 & #2.
Thank you for making my day.
Oh Ann, this post is great!! It is just hilarious!
Oh Ann,
Now that I’ve picked myself up off of the floor…
…this post has to rank as one of your most hilarious (at least from my perspective) posts. Brilliant play-by-play accompanied by exquisitely expressive photos.
Not having a great week here, but you (Holly and Lulu) have succeeded in making me laugh loud, long and hard – to the point of tears.
I’ll be wearing a goofy smile for the rest of the day, I’m sure.
Thanks Ann.
Lisa, “whelper weight” — LOL!
Our dogs always “wrestle” like that too. Actually my husband calls it doggy “jiu jitsu.” It often sounds horrific but is always playful and entertaining!
Wow, Luscious Lulu really took one for the team (I mean, pack). She should ask for a rematch…it looked like it was rigged…I mean, what’s up with the ref? She never even stepped into the ring. So funny…thank you for another hilarious post.
one of my favorite posts ever! thanks for the chuckle…. you’re going to need tiny “whelper weight champion” belt!!!
The funny one is Daphne, just lying there on the bed, the observer. Poor Coco has taken to hiding behind her. Good thinking! The second picture of Holly says it all, doesn’t it? As a terrier person, all I can say is, “She’s a terrier.”
LOVE these pics and the play-by-play! Holly is seriously too cute! Thanks for the morning laugh…
Ha ha ha ha ha ha!! Sooooooooooooooo funny! Love it.
The daring moves, the heart-stopping drama, the riveting play-by-play, the surprising defeat of the swaggering, seemingly undermatched Luscious Lulu …
… yet deep down we *knew* Holly would pull it off, somehow. The little scrapper. Giant-killer. She’s gonna go far, that one is.
(Two of my favorite parts: “No tongues! NO TONGUES!” and “ottoman empire” –LOL!)
And it’s all such a classic life-with-dogs scenario! What we call “Greco-canine wrestling” has long been a favorite spectator sport at our house. Thanks for the hilarious post! xo
Holly is the reigning champ of the ottoman…I love it! Spring time in CT is going to be very interesting with this little girl. I’m sure all sorts of treasures will be coming your way.
BTW, have the horses recovered yet?..LOL
OMG is right, Annie. This is HILARIOUS! I love the mug in picture #2.
OMG, Hellacious Holly, what a dog! Boy, does she look triumphant.
Annie
I’m die’n here. Over saturation of cute.
Umm, Ann, not nn!Must have COFFEE!
nn, This is terrific (terrierific!). Thank you!
