I am not going to be able to sign books at The Hickory Stick Bookshop as planned today. Roads in Connecticut are closed. Gomer and I will be there on Sunday, March 3rd at 2:00 PM.
Today we’re out playing in the snow.
Well, I had just a great time in the Midwest this past week. Thanks to all of you who came to my Chicago and Milwaukee events. I met some longtime bloggers in Chicago, which was fabulous. I also got to have dinner with my sister’s in-laws, Dave and Jen Seminara and their adorable boys. Dave took the photo on this post. So, I just had a great, great time.
I’m heading up to Boston today for some press stuff and also to visit my mom and sister. Then I’m doing a reading at the Brookline Booksmith on Wednesday, February 6th. 7:00 PM.
I spend a lot of time on YouTube looking at animal videos but this is my new favorite. Please enjoy this determined little dog and rather annoyed/lazy cat:
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a great day. The kids were home and wanted to sleep in for most of the morning, so I left them slumbering and set off for the Roxbury Congregational Church. I had volunteered to help out with the annual Thanksgiving Day Run For A Cure 5K road race. It’s a cancer benefit organized by the church, the town’s recreational commission and some others. It was a beautiful day.

My daughter decided to photograph the kittens today. Apparently somebody gave them the heads-up, because they prepared a series of insanely adorable poses.
First, Mackerel modeled his “Please sir, may I have some more?” pose.
He followed this up with his “Praise the Lord!” pose:
Then Mackerel and his sister (whose name is in escrow due to a family disagreement about what is should be) quickly looked around for some interesting background for their “pair” shots.
Seriously, have you ever seen anything cuter?
Some of you might recall that I entered my beloved children pets in a “Critterati Contest” held by the New Yorker a few years ago. We did very well, with Mark and Gomer claiming 2 of the top 5 spots. You can see them here.
Since then, it has become a bit of a halloween tradition to dress up the animals in our house. It turns out that they love to cross-dress as humans. Probably because of all the attention they receive during the picture taking. If you follow me on Facebook and Twitter, you have probably seen my most recent photos of our critters all dragged out, but if not, here they are:
I was outside earlier today, enjoying the beautiful weather. We still have quite a few leaves left on the trees and the way the sun filtered down through them made for a very beautiful dappled effect on Mark. So I whipped out my camera.
You know what’s coming, right? The dappled poem, of course.
PIED BEAUTY
by Gerard Manley Hopkins
GLORY be to God for dappled things—
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough; 5
And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.
