Ann Leary, author of The Good House
Author of The Good House
Yesterday, I was driving from Chicago to Milwaukee with my beloved sister Meg and my dear friend Jane. We were heading to Milwaukee, where I was scheduled to speak at the Lynden Sculpture Garden as part of their wonderful Women’s Speaker Series.
On the way, we stopped in Racine, Wisconsin and after much driving around, finally found a home where Meg and I had lived when we were children. Meg and I were just giddy recalling our friends, the places we had played, the pets we had owned, you know, all our adventures. Jane was very polite and didn’t yawn too many times. Then, we were back on the highway, heading toward Milwaukee, when my editor, Brenda Copeland called. Brenda asked, “Has anybody ever called you a bitch?”
On Wednesday night, I did a reading/book signing at the Manhattan Upper West Side Barnes & Noble. Well, I should say, I did the signing and the amazingly talented Mary Beth Hurt did the reading! Mary Beth is the narrator of the audio version of The Good House and I’ve blogged before about how thrilled I am with her rendition of Hildy. So it was wonderful to sit back and listen to her read from my book on Wednesday night. Then I answered questions from a wonderfully packed audience. So many friends were there, and so many people that I had not yet met .
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it here on the blog or not, but I have a new book coming out next week, and in order to promote the book, I’ll be showing up at a few bookstores to do readings/signings. Of course, I’ve known about this for months, but it was only two days ago that I realized that I should find something nice to wear to these events. A little dress is what I had in mind. Something understated but flattering. Not something that necessarily says, “Wow!” but, rather, something that says “Look, let’s not kid ourselves, I’m no spring chicken but nonetheless feel it’s important to make an effort.”
Do any of you belong to book clubs or reading groups? Because I’ve added a new section to this website called “Book Clubs.” It’s right at the top of the page there. If your book club is interested in reading The Good House, I’d be happy to Skype in for a visit with you. We can chat about the book, and then I’ll post some information about your group and there will be an area here for you to post your own comments as well. What do you think?
I need an author photo for my the cover of my new book, The Good House. So last week, I went into the city for a photo shoot with the amazing Beowulf Sheehan.
I know that there are a great deal of important issues to discuss – the election, the olympics, global warning, the Kardashians – but can we deviate from the norm here, and talk about me for once? Specifically, I’d like to talk about my underwear.
I used to have satellite radio in my car, but the subscription ran out almost a year ago, and I never bothered getting it renewed. I like to listen to playlists of music in my car, especially when I’m working on a book, so I didn’t really miss all the radio talk shows at first. I was no longer able to listen to NPR, BBC Radio and CSPAN and I don’t watch the news on TV very often, so before long, the only information I was receiving about the world was from The Daily Show and the Colbert Report and on Twitter and gosh, the news was funny! I have spent the past year viewing candidates, politics and even wars with an attitude of rather bemused indifference, which is, I know, the American way, and I was a happy person.
Here’s the thing, my novel is complete and is being prepared to be “launched.” That doesn’t mean that it’s coming out soon. It’s not, it’s coming out next winter. But it has been sent out for endorsements from other authors that will appear on the cover of the book. My agent sent the book out to two authors who were kind enough to read it promptly and then reward me with just the most flattering blurbs. I don’t think I’m allowed to reveal them yet but it’s a great relief to get their feedback.
