Today it’s the day of the 289 victims’ funeral. Today it’s the day of
the farewell. Today Italy weeps after its dead. Today I feel much worse
than the last days. Watching the funeral it has been devastating, the
hundreds coffins in line, the solemn sacred music of the religious funeral,
the smaller white coffins of the children with toys on the top, placed on
the bigger brown ones of the parents. The thousands families and friends
crying silently behind. The youngest was only 5 months old. More than 5,000
people participated in the funeral, the 12,000 rescuer were present, all
the most State authorities were present, foreign ambassadors were also
present. The Italian flags will be held at half staff for the whole day.
Today it?s an heartbreaking day, and I and all Italians are mourning.

For Those Lost in Abruzzo

I found this poem, written by Gaius Valerius Catullus, a Roman, in the first century BC.

Driven Across Many Nations
by Gaius Valerius Catullus
Translated by Charles Martin

Driven across many nations, across many oceans,
I am here, my brother, for this final parting,
to offer at last those gifts which the dead are given
and to speak in vain to your unspeaking ashes,
since bitter fortune forbids you to hear me or answer,
O my wretched brother, so abruptly taken!
But now I must celebrate grief with funeral tributes
offered the dead in the ancient way of the fathers;
accept these presents, wet with my brotherly tears, and
now & forever, my brother, hail & farewell.

More From our Abruzzo Correspondent

More details from Ylenia. I have read nothing in US newspapers or news sites that comes close to the detail that Ylenia has provided us with her eloquent and heartbreaking descriptions of this terrible disaster. We’re all so sorry for you and your fellow citizens Ylenia and Enza and we can’t thank you enough for taking the time to share with us what is happening there. Nobody has reported here (that I know of) the fact that a seismologist predicted the quake and then was silenced by the government. How tragic! How wonderful of your parents to offer their home to one of the many thousands of families who are now homeless. Take care Ylenia and Enza!

Another update from Ylenia in Abruzzo:

“Thanks everyone for the nice comments of solidarity and for prayers.
I didn’t sleep so good last night, Tv has been on alive on the updates in
the damaged areas. At 1 am there was another substantial tremor but I
didn’t feel that, I was asleep and tired. The problem is that some expert
say, the strongest one has still to come, I hope he is wrong!

The fallowing is the balance:
150 Deads
250 Missing
70.000 Homeless
100 Rescued

Dear Ylenia is Ok

Those of you who read this blog and follow the comments know Ylenia, who is from Italy. You might not know that she is from Abruzzo, where that horrible earthquake happened last night. Thankfully, Ylenia and her family are fine. Here is her report. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and those around you, Ylenia, and especially with those brave firefighters.

Ewe Better Beware

Our neighbors Steve and Diana Hochmuth have just emailed me these horrifying photos they took of the attack sheep which apparently decided to include them in its path of terror through Roxbury on Sunday. Here it is in their yard:

And here it is, on its stalking mission to who knows where. Your house could be next!

Can nothing stop it?

People of Connecticut, heed my warning. Keep your livestock inside and your firearms handy. I have two horses who have the worst cast of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome my vet has ever seen. One of them has bandages on both hind legs. The other is covered in stitches. And this lone bandit gets to trot down the middle of the road as if she’s above the law?

9/11 Memorial

Last night we attended the first annual “Notes of Hope” benefit dinner, to raise funds and awareness about the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Jane Rosenthal, Craig Hatkoff, Robert De Niro and others who have been instrumental in the revitalization of downtown Manhattan since 9/11 were honored. Denis hosted the event, introducing Billy Crystal, Peggy Noonan, and the other speakers.
Jane, Craig and Robert DeNiro, (Jane and Craig are our friends, and though I’ve met De Niro quite a few times, I can’t do that Hollywood thing of referring to him by his first name, because he really has no idea who I am every time we meet.) Anyway, I adore (worship) him as an actor and am in awe of his quiet, gentle public manner and the way that he very privately works wonders for the city he loves so much. He and producer Jane Rosenthal (They co-founded Tribeca Productions, his film company) started the Tribeca Film Festival after 9/11 in an effort to help that neighborhood recover. Millions attend the festival each year, bringing huge amounts of revenue to the downtown area.
